Area
The five-arched stone bridge that spans the River Leven in the small village of Newby Bridge was named in honour of it in 1651. Haverthwaite to Newby Bridge is the route of the famous Furness Railway, one of Britain's oldest working standard gauge steam trains. Lakeside hotels and the Aquarium of the Lakes offer stunning views of Windermere and the surrounding fells, as well as a fascinating look at the history of the Lakes. A visit to Bowness-on-Windermere and the nearby village of Hawkshead is a wonderful way to spend a day, and the views from Gummer's How, which is just a few miles away, are just as breathtaking.

Region
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
