Area Approximately eight miles to the west of the historic City of Durham itself is the lovely village of Lanchester. Set in the beautiful countryside of County Durham, this village took its name from the Roman fort of Longovicium, situated half a mile to the south-west. Today, archaeologists are still drawn to this charming settlement because of the Roman connection with the fort and the neighbouring villages, situated on the old 'Roman Dere Street. The Norman church was - along with a number of the surrounding farms - built using stones from the original Longovicium fort. The village now offers a good range of shops, pubs and restaurants and the surrounding countryside is full of excellent walks, as well as historic attractions. Just 20 miles away is the city of Newcastle, which provides the usual cosmopolitan entertainment's, whilst for those in search of sun and sand will enjoy the beaches and castles of the North Sea Coastline.
Region From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

November 2019
The cottage was very comfortable and clean.. It had the facilities we required and the views from every window were fabulous. We were close enough to Lanchester and Durham to enjoy everything they had to offer whilst remote enough to enjoy open countryside. The owners were very friendly and hospitable. Lovely cottage, highly recommended.

Lovely cottage in a stunning location

March 2019
The pictures on the website DO NOT give the true picture about the cottage.. I had reservations when I booked it but as soon as you walk in, it was instantly homely and comfortable. There are lovely rural views across fields from EVERY room. The pictures were very minimalist and more internal views would be helpful. The owner was lovely and very helpful. The only negative comment is the driveway is very potholed, some TLC needed.I find that there is usually insufficient info on fridge and freezer capacity on most cottage websites. A picture of them would be helpful and also of the shower cubicle. This cottage has an awesome, large cubicle. We had a great time at this cottage and were very sad to leave, would stay again

The directions to the cottage were easy to follow and we were met with a warm welcome.. The cottage was everything we expected - warm. cosy, comfortable, properly equipped, clean and roomy. It was within reach of all we wanted to do ie visit Durham, Gateshead, Beamish and allowed us the relaxing time we needed. Next time we visit the area we will be checking availability of the cottage first

September 2018
This is a beautiful cottage - extremely well furnished and equipped situated in jaw droppingly gorgeous countryside.. The owners are very friendly but kept out of the way. Only very slight negatives are that you must have a car as nothing in walking distance and also, although stated as dog friendly, the owner's sheep are in fields all around the property and come right up to fence line with just stockproof mesh between the garden and them! My dog would have easily have got through!
Mr Bartlett

Friendly people at the cottage, left us to our own devices which is very nice if staying attached to the owners.Would definitely go back

I feel the three star rating of the property is misleading as we have stayed in a number of 4 star rated properties that are not as good as this! The property is excellent and the owners warm and welcoming. The views from the gardens and the conservatory are wonderful. The cottage is an ideal base for visiting a beautiful and interesting area of our country.

This is a beautiful cottage and should be rated as 4 star not 3 star. We had a lovely and comfortable holiday. The views from the cottage were fantastic. My two little dogs made themselves at home as soon as we got into the cottage. The fenced off garden was brilliant. The owners could not have been any more friendly and helpful.

August 2013
The cottage was blissfully comfortable, quiet, relaxing and spotlessly clean. The cottage was stocked with everything we could need for a family of 3 for a week, including washing machine, dishwasher, wi-fi and crockery. The owners live in the cottage next door but are in no way intrusive - they are very friendly and welcoming and are on-tap if anything is needed. It is also a great location - very quiet with fantastic views but with easy access of many family friendly activites. This week we have; visited Beamish Museum (twice), Gibside (National Trust property and gardens), Durham, Newcastle, Druridge Bay (beautiful, clean, quiet beach) and had a boat ride on the Tyne. We have had a wonderful week and will definitely stay at Granary Cottage again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

November 2010
It was a joy to get 'home' to this beautiful cottage and its surroundings after long days out and about.
Breakfast in the conservatory was a pleasure watching the birds and horses; but the evenings relaxing were the best. Myself and two friends had promised ourselves trips up to the local, or out for a meal each night, but the cottage was so cosy and comfortable, we didn't want to move - so just made our own meals in the fantastic kitchen - which had everything, and spent enjoyable evenings in the delightful sitting room watching TV, reading, writing or talking.
So much thought has gone into the comfort of the visitors, that we couldn't fault a thing.
Even hot water bottles in the superb large bedrooms and plenty of books for the adults and games for the children.
As for the delightful owners - what can we say ? Thank you for the greeting on arrival, the bowl of fresh eggs in the kitchen. Your kindness and help throughout the week.
We'll be back. Thats for sure !!
Mr Noble
October 2010
It was excellent value and a very comfortable cottage. We were handy for Diggerland and Beamish which my grandson (OK we all) enjoyed. A particular asset was the owners horse and pony in the field and chickens in the yard. We were also allowed to take our dog with us. It exceeded our expectations.
Mr Heath
October 2010
We were made to feel very welcome, but at the same time the owners were not a bit intrusive whilst being there if needed. The cottage is very comfortable and well appointed. Nothing was missing and even the TV had a larger screen than usual with full freeview. The location is quiet without being isolated and there are many places to visit at all points of the compass. It is ideal for visiting Durham which we needed for our son's graduation day.
Chrissie and Gavin have succeeded in making this a real home from home and we really look forward to coming again.
Mrs Lobban
September 2010
Coming 'home' to The Granary after a long day out... It was so comfortable and cosy - all three ladies were so sorry to leave it to come back home.
Our hosts were the nicest, kindest couple. Even a welcome dish of fresh eggs awaited us. I could go on, but there is no other word other than fabulous. Even this is not sufficient. Not sure of the Tourist Board Star Grade, but it deserves the highest, plus distinction.
Mr Thistleton

January 2010
The friendliness of the hosts, the wonderful position of the cottage, the wonderful open fire and abundance of fuel for it. It was perfect. I just wish that I didn't want to praise this cottage and couple so highly as it may make it more difficult to book this cottage next time!!
Tina
January 2010
Very warm welcome from the adjacent owner, but not intrusive. Lovely house, very well equipped and clean. Large kitchen with dining area. Fantastic open fire with a constant, plentiful supply of logs. Could have spent the week indoors doing jigsaws and playing games, but there was lots to explore in the area.
Lanchester had sufficient shops for us, plus a good Italian restaurant. Durham within easy reach.
Well positioned for exploring Northumberland - Hadrian's wall, Killhope Lead mines & Souter lighthouse were all excellent.
Would definitely stay again.
Only drawback (minr) was the need to drive everywhere.

We have stayed in this cottage three times while our son was at Durham University. It provides a peaceful base and in winter the log fire makes it a cosy retreat. There are lovely views from the triple aspect sitting room. The owners are very kind and helpful. The cottage is nicely furnished and the beds are comfortable. There is ample linen and towels. The only downside is that there is only one WC which is in the bathroom and there is no dishwasher. The surrounding countryside is lovely and quite undiscovered and there is much to see and do - the cities of Durham and Newcastle, roman sites, castles, industrial heritage, walks and the coast.

An immensely kind and thoughtful welcome. The hosts are always very helpful. This was in the middle of a cold February and a log fire had been laid and the cottage was already warm when we arrived. The cottage is very well stocked with all the necessities for a comfotable and happy stay and, while retaining a traditonal feel, is up to date with all its equipment and decor. There are lovely views from most windows and a very nice conservatory(with heating!). The property is quiet and secluded yet within an easy drive of good pubs and many local attractions. Peace quiet. Friendly, having a few animals around helped with entertaining the children. Lots of space, felt safe regarding the children. Easy driving distance to attractions for the children.

The cottage really was lovely and cosy, with a very friendly cat! It made an excellent base for exploring the local area, and the owners were very friendly.

We liked it so much our parents booked up to go on our recommendation. A place for total chill out. Great for kids too, as plenty of space, outside area and entertainment from the hens, ponies and cats.
