Property Description

Holiday home
The Granary is located just 6 miles from Church Stretton and was originally a barn used as part of a working farm. It has been tastefully converted to offer accommodation for up to 5 people. Much of the barn's original charm has been retained through features such as exposed beams and a wood-burning stove. Shared use of washing machine and tumble dryer. The hallway sports an oak staircase and leads to the dining area up a set of original stone steps. For romantic couples, there is a four-poster bed and, for larger groups, there is shared use of a games room with its own snooker table. Outside the Granary is a small garden which lends itself to al fresco dining in the summer months.

Accomodation Details
Three bedrooms: 1 x four poster double with walk-in wardrobe and shower room with shower, basin and WC, 1 x ground floor twin, 1 x ground floor single. Ground floor bathroom with bath with shower over, basin and WC. Well-equipped kitchen with dining area. Sitting room with woodburner. Note: Shower room is in a small confined area under beams.

Area
This huge hill is topped by a moorland plateau of heather and rocks and broken on the eastern side by a series of hollows or "batches". This is a popular walking area - ideal for exploring the Shropshire Hills. Church Stretton is the first town in Shropshire to receive Walkers Welcome status. Walkers Welcome towns are places which have something special to offer for walkers more than simply being a fantastic place to come an enjoy the great outdoors. The town also holds its own annual Walking Festival in June. In the Carding Mill Valley, there is a thriving antiques centre with over 60 stalls. This is open every day and nearby Acton Scott Historic Farm will give you a taste of 19th Century farming. There are attractions to suit every age and taste in this region, from the Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom to the historic Dudmaston Hall.

Region
A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

The Granary was so lovely, full of character and had everything you needed.. The area is lovely, countryside, walks and greenery. We had a lovely week there and hope to return.

The cottage is just lovely and exactly as shown on the website.. All of the rooms are lovely and the equipment provided in the kitchen is most of what you need to do some holiday cooking. We ate in every night and managed this comfortably. We managed to have a supermarket shop delivered to the cottage as well as a take away delivery but you don;t need to drive far to get to the local shops for everything you need. We really appreciated the efforts of the owners to make the many COVID-19 adaptations such as separate equipment buckets in the play barn with plenty of antibacterial spray and gel. We have two teenagers (17 and 14) and we had such fun playing pool, table tennis and badminton in the barn. The room at the top could be tricky for those with mobility issues but we decided to give this room to our 14 year old daughter who just loved having the four poster bed, own bathroom and games room. The shower up there was also compact but we appreciated having it. It did get incredibly hot up there but we did not predict the unseasonable hot weather we had all week. A couple of small fans would have been appreciated to help with the heat. A bin in the upstairs room and downstairs bathroom would have been appreciated and a dust pan and brush to help keep the kitchen clean as we go would also have been useful. Just tiny points though. The welcome book is very well written in a friendly manner and very informative - you can tell the owners care that you have a nice time in the area. We appreciated the time Tom took to show my husband and son around the farm and my husband had lots of fun helping them get the sheep from the field onto the farm when he spotted they were having difficulties. We have never been on holiday to Shropshire and we would definitely recommend it! There are lots of beautiful and interesting walks and places to visit. We definitely hope to return to the area and hopefully this cottage - thank you for sharing your beautiful farm with us.

Booked this accommodation having seen it reviewed on this website. Not recommended. Expensive for such poor quality. We did not see our hostess at all. The lighting in the rooms was low and gloomy. No soap or towels provided in the bathrooms. No second sheet on the bed which had a small blanket and very heavy duvet (weighed about the same as a door). Bulbs kept blowing the bedside lamp every time I went to read. Entry into upstairs bedroom was via a 3 step up and 3 step down stile with no handrail. Very small shower with plastic curtain that clung to your legs seemed to be housed in a wardrobe. Excessive noise from floorboards in the upper floor when anybody moved, possibly exacerbated by the heating having been on, closely matched by the heavy duty traffic noise from the small but very busy road the property is located on. The heating had to be overridden to get it on, and then, it would not go off. Car parking available. Only plus point of the stay was the very friendly black and white cat.

The location was ideal for us and we had some good trips out.. We were very lucky with the weather, and a good time was had by all. the Granary was lovely with top of the range equipment and everything you would need to cook a nice meal. The creeky floor boards were a bit annoying but that was very minor. All in all a very nice place to spend a holiday at. Many thanks Mrs Fox.

Well designed spacious well equipped accommodation with original features.. Lovely location and an added bonus was being able to meet and feed animals on the farm. Games barn was great for my daughter and she also enjoyed being able to play pool in cottage. Many places of interest to visit within easy reach and lots of dog friendly pubs and cafes with a good variety of food. Lovely welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk and homemade cake and owners Nick and Jeanette were very friendly and helpful.

This is our second visit to the Granary.. Fantastic in every way, especially the helpfulness of the property's owners who obviously care that holidaymakers have everything they need. Thank you for helping us to make amazing memories with our three growing girls and our dog (who loved it too)!

What a lovely surprise so quirky and comfortable. On arrival we found a lovely fresh homemade cake and essentials to start our holiday. 'Farmer Nick' let my grandsons feed the calves after a good walk with Jeanette round the fields. Such a lovely friendly couple, on the last morning Nick took the boys on a tractor ride! There is loads to see in the surrounding area, castle ruins where the boys could climb about, recreation grounds where the boys could play football and cricket. Plenty of shops nearby. We managed to go into Wales as it was so close too. Thank you Jeannette and Nick.

Everything really the accommodation was lovely and quirky.. It was a barn conversion and we could see a lot of thought had gone in to it and everything was really well thought out for the comfort of the guests staying. My husband and son loved the pool table above the kitchen so they could get a game in before tea and I only had to shout when it was ready as I knew where they were! The cottage was lovely and spacious every comfort was thought of. When we arrived a tray with tea bags, coffee, sugar and a lovely cake was waiting for us in the kitchen and a pint of milk in the fridge. Later in the week the farmer left us some eggs. Although we were on a working farm it was really quiet so we could enjoy a relaxing holiday! The weather was lovely too so that always helps. Really though there was nothing to find fault with just enjoy a lovely time in and around Shropshire which is exactly what we did!

August 2018
Jeanette and Nick made us feel very welcome from day one.. There was a delicious homemade cake and essentials on our arrival, the beds were comfortable and cosy for a good nights sleep. The quality the furnishings showed that the owners cared for our comfort. Jeanette took us for a walk around the fields and farm and then Nick showed the boys how to feed the calves, on the last day the boys had a ride on Nick's tractor. Surrounding area was very interesting, plenty to do, we found a couple of recreation fields where the boys could play football and cricket, you do need to drive there but it's not far, one in the next village on A49 towards Church Stretton and another one in Church Stretton itself. Two castle ruins (Clun and Montgomery) for the boys to explore (30 mins away) and Wales is so close we just had to pop over the border and explore some of the area. Plenty of shops nearby and Shrewsbury has a large retail park just 20 mins away. All in all an interesting holiday.

The granary is simply a stunning home from home.. As you walk through the door...the welcome is warm, cozy and friendly. The christmas tree and candle flickering, the welcome tray with mince pies and fresh flowers...are all perfect. The whole house is stunning, but the kitchen is topping the list, with enough crockery to serve an army. The newly refurbished games barn has fun and games for all..but if you like to stay warm..theres pool on the landing..just above the kitchen. Play and chat as the cooking is done, fantastic. All nesltled in gorgeous Shropshire, that offers many many attractions for all, whatever the weather and whatever time of year. Our 2nd visit, over new year, equal to our first last year.

August 2016
The photos did not do this property justice.. Nick and Janette could not have been accommodating fresh flowers on the table and freshly made cake. My children loved the play barn and would have been more than happy to say in there all week. The location was beautiful and our trips to Church Streeton was really enjoyable. Nick took the children on a tractor ride and also let them herd in the cattle. Would highly recommend.
Mrs Mclauchlan

The housekeepers are very kind. The house, an old barn, is very impressing and the games barn was very suitable for our kids. We were very much sorry when we had to leave; it was a wonderful holiday.
Mrs Whitehead
August 2015
The Granary was an excellent cottage to stay for 5 adults, there was plenty of space and it was very comfortable. The kitchen/diner was a great place to gather for chats and planning the next days activities, while the lounge gave us all a lovely place to chill out. The bedrooms were simply decorated with comfortable beds and masses of storage. The play barn is a great place for children and adults to play and burn off energy. Would recommend and hope to return for two weeks next time.

A wonderful holiday home! I would gladly recommend to anyone. The accommodation and facilities were perfect for a holiday. The owners were also friendly and made us feel at home. The play barn had plenty of games to keep us engaged. They also provided plenty of wood for the fire. 5 Stars!

April 2015
This was an excellent holiday home that surpasses all expectations. From the welcome tray of a fresh baked cake with fllowers, tea and coffee and freh milk to a well stocked wood basket for the wood burning fire. The facilities both in the converted barn to games available to play in the games barn (snooker, chess, badmington, football, cricket nets...) make this a real holiday rental that allows you to relax and unwind. The owners were very welcoming and I would gladly visit again and recommend to anyone. Thank you!

WE stayed at the Granary for a week in August. The accommodation was lovely, our 3 kids enjoyed playing in the barn and we all helped out feeding the cattle, plus a ride in the Tractor. The owners were very friendly and always willing to help. We explored the area visited Church Stretton, and Shrewsbury. Some nice walks - Altogether a lovely relaxing holiday!

We stayed at the Granary for a week in September, along with my brother-in-law and his wife. This place definitely has the 'Wow' factor! As you enter the property you walk straight into the lounge, complete with wood burning stove, then through a door into a very well equiped kitchen. Through another door into the hall, with stairs leading up to the first floor, and two bedrooms and a bathroom. Upstairs you'll find a games room complete with pool/snooker table, then up a few steps into the master bedroom. This is a lovely room with Velux windows, giving lots of light, an en suit shower room tucked under the beams, and a walk in wardrobe. We felt at home here right away, especially when the evenings came and we lit the wood burner...very cosy! The Granary is well situated for visiting the local area. We had a brilliant day at the Victorian Farm at Ironbridge, followed by the Coalport Museum, the Tar tunnel, and the pipe factory. Shrewsbury market gave us another good day out, as did Church Stretton, with it's fabulous Antique Store. We rounded the week off with a day at the Ludlow Food Festival. Well worth a visit. All in all a very comfortable place to stay....home from home with the added extras of the local area thrown in.

December 2012
A lovely well thought out property which was a fantastic base from which to explore beautiful Shropshire, which exceeded our expectations. Owners were around but unintrusive. Lovely play barn if you have little ones. Our dog enjoyed her first holiday and the little courtyard is secure. Aside from the muddy cow fields opposite, which we wouldn't recommend a walk through, although we did laugh a lot, there are some fabulous places to visit and walk. Highly recommend this property and Shropshire

We spent a lovely week here in the summer. The house was beautiful, and full of character...only complaint was the shower in the en-suite was miniscule, and the shower curtain would stick to your legs if you took a shower! The kids loved the barn...and so did the parents! Lots of things to do, pool, badminton, table tennis, trampoline, darts etc even when it was raining. Beautiful cake was made for us on arrival...yum! All in all it was a great place to return home to, when we had a day sight seeing or shopping! Little patio at the back is a real sun trap in the morning, and we sat at the front in the afternoon. The owners were really friendly, yet give you your privacy which was really appreciated!

What a lovely property to come home to at the end of our visits to Shrewsbury, Chester and other places around. Girls loved to go straight to the barn to play with the huge range of toys and sports available, even mum and dad liked a game of pool! Lovely lemon cake and pint of milk in fridge waiting as a welcome! Property did not lack anything - it was very well-equipped.

April 2012
The property was lovely and made a cosy stay with the log burner in the evenings. If the sky is clear, be sure to gaze up and be amazed at how many stars you can see in this area of low light pollution. Lots to see and do within 30 min drive, recommend RaF museum at Cosford, free and well worth a visit. Got a family year pass for all the museums and attractions in and around Ironbridege, worth every penny. Particularly enjoyed Blists hill victorian town and Ironbridge is a lovely place. Not much nearby if you are on foot but it made a nice peaceful location. Would go here again.

My family and I stayed here for Christmas and where really impressed by the little extras supplied by the owners. The barn has many interesting features, including stain glass window, oak staircase (unusual entrance into main bedroom- over bridge). The beds where really comfy. All the rooms have several different lighting options to create romantic atmosphere, especially with the wood burner. Kitchen equipped with everything needed to cook Christmas dinner and more. Lovely walks in the area with the dog, Cardingmill valley is a must. Good shopping and indian in Shrewsbury. Would I recommend it, definitely not, I want to keep it all to myself. Already booked for October this year, can't wait to return.

Made to feel most welcome, a very relaxed atmosphere, the owners were completely concerned that our stay would be a good one. The barn was very comfortable with a lovely atmosphere. The farm surroundings were great, rural but very handy to get to all the well worth visiting places. One of the best aspects was the peace and tranquility but in the barn we had to be up early to avail ourselves of the hot water as there was none when the boiler went off at 8 30 am.

December 2009
First class very nice cottage, spacious and well equipped. General decoration looking a bit "tired" -as interior is relatively dark would probably enhance if all walls painted magnolia. On a working farm but quite private and quiet, owners very welcoming and pleasant. Would stay there again.

December 2009
Our thoughts were passed onto the owners! It was a beautiful cottage, but not as convenient as we had expected. Lots of 'bits' were missing, like no towel rails in main bathroom. We found it difficult walking our small dog, as the lanes are quite busy, and so we had to drive almost into Shrewsbury, to be abble to let him off of the lead, for a 'proper' run. We missed having a 'real' garden, had the weather been good, we would have spent time just sat-out, but on the nicer days, the very tiny garden was a bit restrictive. There were other points, but as it is now 6 months ago, I cannot recall them all, but they were written down, and handed to the owners. Whenever I have made suggestions to 'Sykes', there has never been any form of contact back to me, so I feel it isn't worth bothering!

December 2009
Much better than the brochure! Very well equipped, comfortable and homely feel to this property and lots of space. Five of us and a dog had a very relaxing stay here, the log burner was a bonus and my 9 year old son enjoyed playing pool. There are lots of walks across farmland from the cottage and ideally placed for a day trip to Shrewsbury and walks along the Long Mynd and trips to Much Wenlock, Ludlow and Church Stretton. We have already booked again for next year!

Really good standard of accommodation. The facilities included shared use of a play barn which comprised loads of things for the kids to do. They spent many hours making the most of these! The owners were very friendly without being intrusive. A guided tour of the farm was given on request, which once again went down very well with the kids.

The owners of the cottage really pulled out all the stops to make the cottage festive at New Year (Christmas Tree lights) and also went the extra mile to make our daughter's 2nd birthday really special by giving her a tractor ride and facilitating our fireworks in one of his fields. Really personal touch.

I like the fact that it is in the rural country but with a large town and all its amenities within 5 miles. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful, and I like the peace and quiet. So much in fact I've booked again!

The overall open plan of the cottage was lovely. A well equipped kitchen saved us a fortune in eating out. The games barn was a fantastic idea - especially with two very active children.

The Granary was a beautiful barn conversion, full of character and very comfortable. The children loved playing in the games barn, which was really well equipped. The Granary was really conveniently located - not far off the beaten track, but felt as though it was in the middle of nowhere. Enjoyed exploring the local lanes on bikes that we had delivered to the property by a local firm. We visited numerous museums and places of interest within the locality and went quad bike trekking. All in all a very successful holiday with something for everyone.

The cottage was very close to the town of Shrewsbury which we found very convenient. It was also a good location for visiting other attractions in the area. The children really enjoyed the games barn attached to the cottage and it provided entertainment for them when we returned to the cottage each evening.

A lovely barn conversion in a peaceful rural setting. The accommodation was to a very high standard and would definitely stay again if we ever returned to Shropshire. The games barn and snooker table on the landing were welcome touches, as was the home made cake and flowers we received upon arrival.

We loved the wood burning stove. The small friendly touches such as the flowers, mince pies, fire ready to light with a basket of wood. We liked 2 bathrooms very useful with 4 adults, and liked the fact that we could take our small dog with us.

It was lovely and peaceful, nobody interferred with you, you could come and go as you liked, and the people were there if you needed anything. It had plenty of facilities for washing and drying, and was central for everything we needed to do. We would certainly book again, when we come back to England. Everything was perfect.
