There are gorgeous countryside and wonderful walks near the town, with views of the southern Lake District and Morecambe Bay. The deepest, widest, and shortest canal in the world, it provides for a pleasant afternoon stroll with views over the sea and a tavern at the end. All of the National Park's attractions are also easily accessible. The Furness Coast is known for its sandy beaches and excellent birdwatching opportunities. The South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Lakes Windermere and Coniston, and popular Birkrigg Common, with its spectacular panoramic views across Morecambe Bay, are among nearby family activities.
