We are actually staying in Solway Cottage right now & this is our 2nd visit second and it won't be our last either, it is absolutely fabulous just like the first time we stayed here but the new sofas are soooo comfy and the view from them is just incredible as you are looking straight out over the water & looking right across to Scotland, honestly the views are STUNNING with sunsets that take your breath away. You even have your own set of steps down to the estuary which is so lovely to walk along but be careful as there are sinking sands in parts and watch the tide as it is very fast but it is brilliant to watch with all the birdlife on the waters edge ,t he cottage has everything that you could need and has its own parking too which is always bonus. The little pub in the village is great and the food is fabulous too and the staff are so friendly. We cannot recommend Solway Cottage enough, Bill & Pasty really do work hard to keep everything so beautiful here. Many Thanks Jules & Stuart x

We managed to book this cottage last minute thanks to someone cancelling - and how lucky were we! This place was just perfect. The photos don’t do it justice - the views from the lounge and bedrooms are just incredible. This cottage has everything you need. Fully equipped kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, lovely outdoor furniture & BBQ. Ånd so much more. Books, games, maps, 3 TVs. And everything spotlessly clean. Bill & Patsy the owners could not have been more helpful or friendly. Information prior to arrival and whilst we were there was spot on. They really have done such a fab job with this place. If you can tear yourself away from the view, there’s so many local walks and a really good pub close by (Kings Arms). We also ventured into Scotland a few times as well as driving through the northern Lake District. And finally, the sunsets were just amazing. A perfect home from home .

Stunning location, in a beautifully furnished holiday cottage, with really thoughtful touches, it was like 'home from home'.. We loved the fresh flowering orchid, the candles, bottle of fizz and chocolates. The cottage owners Bill and Patsy, were helpful and friendly. The village of Bowness on Solway is a special place, very tranquil and pretty, which makes for a really relaxing holiday. It was lovely sat on the decked area of the cottage, for lunch or an early evening drink, or listening to the owl calls at dusk and later watching glorious sunsets and stars. We shall probably go back.

A very relaxing and peaceful stay.. We were made to feel very welcome and the decking at the back is the place to be on an evening!

We had a lovely 2 week break at Solway Cottage.. The accommodation is lovely, extremely clean, well equipped and the beds are very comfortable. The view from the cottage is stunning and watching the tide come in and out was fascinating. Our daughter loved going down to the estuary when the tide was out and collecting shells from the mud! A really peaceful place to stay with plenty of walks and places to visit and we have come back feeling very relaxed and distressed. I would thoroughly recommend this lovely cottage.

The cottage is beautiful and very well equipped.. It was very clean. It has lovely views. The owners are onsite and ready to help all they can. We would definitely return but unfortunately we found the furniture very uncomfortable, the leather sofas were soft and you slide off the all the time, they have no support. The dining chairs are stools. But we are glad we visited.

We enjoyed sitting on the decking looking at the fabulous view across the solway firth to Dumfries and Galloway.. The cottage is fantastic and the best equipped for self catering that we have ever had.Would thoroughly recommend.

Outstanding cottage with panoramic views.. Shall definitely return, if you like calm and a place to de-stress, this is for you. Routes to many Cumbrian places of interest are easily accessible, although drives can be half hour to an hour, drives are on quiet, scenic routes. My husband and I enjoyed every moment, staying at the cottage or tootling by foot or car, throughout naturalistic Cumbria. Do not let the fact that the cottage is on the grounds of the owners. The cottage gives you absolute privacy because the cottage has been well thought out for maximum sea view and isolation. On the other hand the owners are available should you require information or help. The whole village was friendly and it has been refreshing to experience a totally different way of life along with a vast range of ecosystems. Next time shall take cycles, perfect flat quiet roads. If you need to get off life's conveyor belt and restore mindfulness, this place is for you. Felt covid protected, more so than at home, owners very clued up on safety measures and went beyond what was required. Exceptional!

Just returned from a 3 night family Easter break & this place is amazing! It has everything you need & spotlessly clean. The owners make you feel very welcome. The pictures on the website do not do it justice. We planned on venturing out to visit different places but didn’t get in the car once! The ever changing views are fantastic & was so peaceful & relaxing. Had some lovely walks along the coastline, the kids thoroughly enjoyed bog jumping! (Nearly lost their trainers.) Went for some food at the Kings Arms pub & would recommend the food, especially the pizzas. Would definitely recommend a stay here & will hopefully return one day.

Magnificent! Having used Sykes Cottages on several previous occasions we think this cottage, its facilities & its location make it the best so far! We did have reservations about the cottage being in such close proximity to the owners' home but this was unfounded. The cottage & its balcony are totally private & give spectacular views over the Firth. The cottage is really well laid out & provides everything one requires during the stay. And the area is really special, with so many great walks over different landscapes & habitats. All in all a truly special place!

Solway Cottage is located in the quiet village of Bowness-on-Solway; local amenities include one pub and the Wallsend tea room, which provided nice lunches and a good selection of cakes.. The surrounding area is both beautiful and peaceful, and the cottage is probably the best place to appreciate this, as it has spectacular views over the water, with a lovely decked area out back with nice seating that lets you take full advantage. You can also walk straight down from the decking to the beach through a terraced garden; while well maintained, the stairs are quite steep in places, so not for those with mobility issues - although within the cottage access is all on one level. The accommodation itself was comfortable, and the hosts appear to have thought of all those little details - nice towels and toiletries in the bathrooms (there are two); plenty of cupboard space in the bedrooms, and a useful laundry area with washing machine and dryer. The kitchen was particularly well equipped, and the coffee machine was a bonus. Good selection of books and dvds to suit many tastes; and lots of information provided on local history, flora and fauna. The owners were very friendly and helpful; as was the bottle of milk, wine and chocolates in the fridge on our arrival - all the necessities! Fresh flowers added another welcoming touch. All in all, this was a lovely place to stay, and I'd be happy to return anytime.

July 2018
Lovely cottage & very well equipped.. In fact for us is was better equipped than needed! Views from the cottage are lovely and saw some stunning sunsets. Situated in quiet village with pub with food just 2 minutes walk. Owners very nice & sent us good directions to get there including a stop at Asda. Bottle of wine, milk & maltesers in the fridge were also a nice welcome. Only downside was the hoards of flies which I suppose is what you get in hot weather in the countryside, but if this would bother you it should be taken into account. All in all we had a lovely week and if it wasn't for the flies we'd love to return.

May 2018
The property is of a very high standard.. The facilities are second to none. Everything you could need in the kitchen and more. The beds are very comfy. Everything was high quality. Breathtaking views from the decking and the nature watching was excellent. The village is quiet, but has a good pub with good food. Lots to do in the surrounding areas, but a car is essential. The owners are close by and very helpful, but do not invade your privacy. All in all a very nice place to visit. I would definately recommend this cottage to my friends and family.

April 2018
Spotlessly clean, beautifully presented, this cottage is a real credit to its owners Bill & Patsy.. The high quality of all the furnishings, fitments and fixtures elevates it way above any of the many other rental cottages we have ever stayed in. Its warm, quiet, everything feel solid and the views are terrific. The owners are next door for questions and help if required, but allow one privacy, the perfect hosts! By nature I am picky and can generally find things that trouble me at these rental cottages but in this instance apart from a couple of minor nit-picks too trivial to mention, I am at a loss to come up with anything negative about the cottage that I feel I should warn others about. We really enjoyed coming back to the cottage after a day's touring and walking, so much so we preferred to cook and "chill out" that eat at pubs and restaurants. The sun sets on the Scotland side of the Solway Firth so every evening one is treated to a display of colour, as a landscape photographer I really apprecaited that! I guess my only area of slight dissapointment was not about the cottage at all but just how little there really is to do in the area. We found ourselves travelling to the Lake District every day and its quite a journey taking 1.5 hours or longer. Of course we knew that when we booked I just found the Solway Firth a tad boring, we didnt see a single boat or any activity all week, and its quite a monotonous beach to walk. What I am trying to say is if you are happy at this location then the cottage is absolutely perfect, but if your main interest is in the Lake District it might be a bit far from the "action". Overall this is a 5 star property. Lovely views, terrific interior and exterior and above all it has that intangible sense of feeling at home and comfortable.

February 2018
The cottage was very clean, comfortable and warm and well set out with plenty of space.. Information was provided for things to do around the area. The chocolates and wine were a nice touch. The view from the cottage was exceptional, we could watch the weather unfold from the comfort of the sitting area and enjoyed watching and photographing the wildlife around the cottage.

December 2017
A romantic and remote setting with a very glamorous view that is great to watch in all weathers - we were blessed with a clear night time sky and star-gaze! The cottage is luxuriously equipped with good quality appliances, crockery and pots and pans. The beds were super comfy and rooms had black-out blinds to aid a good night's sleep. The underfloor heating and electric blankets meant that we were toasty warm even when the temperature was below freezing. The nearest village shop is a short drive away but we would recommend stocking up on supplies at the Asda at Carlisle or bringing your own provisions if staying for short break, there is plenty of space in the fridge, cupboards and separate freezer. There is a wonderful coastal walk from the doorstep and a great village pub in which to drink beer and eat cumberland sausage and chips when you return. This is totally unspoilt coastline in an area of outstanding natural beauty. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return.

We had a brilliant stay at Solway Cottage, it was so much more than what we expected! The view was breathtaking no matter what time of day it was, our stay was so relaxing and peaceful. The cottage itself was equipped with everything you could ever need, plus more! It was clean, modern, comfortable and homely. Felt like a home away from home. We are already talking about re-booking for spring! All in all a fantastic, beautiful place. Thanks so much.

Writing this on our last night, we all feel so sad to be leaving! Even though we only came for 3 nights it has been a perfect, relaxing getaway. The one thing that I’ll miss the most is the amazing view from the cottage, just beautiful at all times of the day. The cottage itself is fantastic, has everything touch could wish for plus more. Felt like a home away from home. It’s clean, modern, comfortable and homely. This was our first time to the area, we loved exploring and going on walks. We will definitely be coming back to stay here! We’ve raved about this cottage so much that my auntie is going to book it too! Thank you so much we have had a great stay!!

November 2017
Luxury cosy cottage in an area of outstanding beauty. This is the perfect retreat when you feel the urge to recharge. From booking to arriving to staying there -everything was stress-free. The view is outstanding and good to watch in all weathers. Recommend that you bring your basic provisions (or stop in ASDA at Carlisle) as the village does not have a shop. The village does have a decent walkers pub in the Kings Arms which serves good food and great beer. The cottage itself is exceedingly well equipped - loads of crockery, full range of tip-top appliances- and felt like a home from home. There books, maps, walking routes, DVD, CDs and board games to keep you entertained. The wi-fi is free but does drop away sometimes, which is a good excuse to step away from the e-mail or the game station! The beds are exceptionally comfy and come complete with an electric blanket. The coastal walk from the doorstep of the cottage is lovely and there are plenty of interesting day-trips within 40 mins drive. The owners live next door and are very helpful and work hard to keep the cottage in tip-top condition.

Had a wonderful week away here - views are amazing and can't get over how high spec this cottage is - the kitchen is better equipped than our own! The huge glass doors allow you to enjoy the scenery even in poor weather and the high quality TVs, bluray, sound systems etc. mean you will be entertained in all weathers! Would recommend: Nearby RSPB Campfield Marsh reserve Wallsend Tea Rooms (Bowness) Kings Arms (Bowness) Hope and Anchor (nearby Port Carlisle - locally sourced food, gorgeous meals and amazing homemade desserts)

Just returned from the most amazing cottage probably the best we have ever stayed in. More equipment than you could ever need or use during the week more than home from home. The cottage was spotless and had good quality fittings bright and airy. The little gifts a lovely touch. The owners we lovely and very helpful. The best thing though has to be the private patio offering us every changing views wonderful wildlife and stunning sunsets a photographers paradise. With excellent walks from your doorstep this has to be a not to be missed cottage if you enjoy peace and quiet.

Solway Cottage is a beautiful cottage with stunning views over the Solway sound. The cottage had all you need and more. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The only thing missing was the sun, so we couldn't use the beautiful sun deck and BBQ, but from inside we could enjoy the views as well.

What a fantastic cottage! Direct access to the empty beach! Loved it! The cottage was clean, modern and very well equipped. The weather was fantastic and the outside decking area was an ideal place to sit and admire the view, have drinks or a barbecue. I spent a lot of time on the patio reading, listening to music and watching my husband jogging on the beach!! Went for a Sunday session at the local (2 minutes walk) and found the staff very welcoming indeed! Lots of wild life and the local pheasant kept us amused on the lawn! Bill and Patsy were great hosts and such a lovely couple. We stay in cottages often and this is one of the best we have stayed in! Loved it and didn't want to leave. Thank you Bill and Patsy!

This is a lovely cottage perched above the Solway Firth. Stunning views, especially the sunsets. Inside the cottage is comfortable and welcoming, well furnished with all you need for a self catering break. The deck acts almost as an additional outside room with comfortable furniture and BBQ. The owners live next door and provided a warm and friendly welcome. As a person with some mobility problems I was also well catered for, with no more that one step between the house and deck and into the shower. Only wee thing I missed was a supportive chair in the living room - couches fine for lounging but hard for me to get up and down. Didn't spoil the holiday though!

July 2015
This house lived up to everything it said it was so well equipped . The owners never bother you and the views from the patio area are stunning. We never closed the blinds all week because every evening as the sun set was like looking at a different painting. The bedrooms were very comfy and it was almost disabled friendly, the only draw back was if it rained and we wanted to eat my wife couldn't get on the bar stools to eat at the worktop she had to stand. Other than that it was a fantastic property to stay in . The property was in a very remote area with the nearest supermarket being a 25 mile round trip but as I said if you want a relaxing holiday this place is excellent.

I was so impressed with the cottage and the location. Everything was spotless, it had a lovely homely feel and we settled in straight away. It had everything we needed and it soon felt like home. The view from the cottage were stunning, something I could definitely get used to. There was so much to do and see, we were left with lots of leaflets and brochures on the attractions which was very helpful because I wouldn't have known where to start otherwise! Definitely one of the most stunning locations in the UK I've ever been to. Would love to come back next year and visit more of this incredible place, thank you for an amazing holiday!

March 2015
An excellent property with high quality fixtures and fittings which had been thought out really well. The view from the balcony was superb and the access to the shore was great. An example of the attention to detail was demonstrated when we had a short power cut after dark and low level emergency lighting cut in, well thought out. The owner has provided an excellent library of books music and DVDs. We will visit again hopefully.

March 2015
This property is fitted out to a very high level of quality and the location in an elevated position over the Solway Firth is idyllic. Everything you could want facility wise, is there. In March despite the windy weather at times the cottage was always warm and cosy. We planned a number of trips out but didn't stir far when the shoreline and surrounding villages were so interesting. I would recommend that any visitor read the book on the History of the Solway Firth from Bill's extensive "library". This lead us to Burgh by Sands to see the church where Edward 1st lay in state in 1307, to look into the history of Port Carlisle and the local bird sanctuary. This quite oasis has an interesting history! We will return.

December 2014
It was in a fantastic location with a stunning view of the estuary. The cottage is very new, having just been completed in September, so everything is new, fresh and clean. The beds are comfy, the toilets, shower room and bath are all of a very high standard, and the kitchen/lounge open area allows you to cook whilst still being in the company of your friends or family.

November 2014
A fantastic week away. The location is perfect, offering an uninterrupted view of the Solway Firth and the constant changing of the tides was great to witness. Everything about the cottage was perfect and spotlessly clean. All the equipment you could need and the owners have put together lots of useful information to get the most out of your stay. A great location for a break away from it all to properly unwind.
Mr Warriner
November 2014
An amazing place, we have loved our stay. The cottage had everything (and more) that you could possibly want and all so beautifully and thoughtfully put together. There are brilliant walks from the cottage, you could stay a week and not use your car. It is peaceful and really off the beaten track and feels like a real escape, but within a reasonable time you can be in the heart of the Lake District or over the border into Scotland. It was wonderful, we couldn't find a single fault!

November 2014
The location of the cottage was marvellous, overlooking the sea.The decor of the whole cottage was wonderful and we were very comfortable. The underfloor heating kept the rooms cosy. Also impressed that the saucepans/bakeware were non-stick and there was a dishwasher, so that meant we could spend even more time relaxing and enjoying the views. Bed was very comfy and only a two minute walk to the local friendly pub. Ideal location for getting into Scotland or the Lakes. Incredible value for money. We highly recommend!

Solway Cottage is in a quiet location with beautiful views of the coast. The owners are very friendly and helped to make the stay a memorable one. The cottage itself is a gem, fully furnished with everything you may need. Also to be mentioned is the amount of information the owners have gathered to make the most of your stay. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet place in a beautiful location.
