Self-Catering Reviews

Mrs Connor
September 2020
The cottage is situated in a beautiful village with all amenities.. ..pubs, shop, bakery etc. The walk down to the cottage is steep and a bit of a struggle with cases, but worth it for the peaceful, out of the way position. Sat in the garden watching the birds and squirrels with a glass of wine in hand...bliss! Indoors the cottage has everything you need for a comfortable week, but is in need of some decoration and upgrading. A problem with the bath tap was reported at the beginning of the week, a quick response from the owner was forthcoming, but no repairs were made.

River Cottage in Youlgreave was perfect, it had everything we needed for a short break.. In a beautiful location - the river below was such a bonus. It was well equipped and felt homely, even with the stuff that had been taken out for Covid. The village has three pubs and a shop. Lots of lovely walks on the doorstep and plenty to visit nearby. Steep access as described - we loved the location, but definitely not for the unfit or anyone with mobility issues.

This was a lovely cottage, set halfway down a steep hill, so access is limited (but it does state that in the booking info! ) The cottage is well set up with everything you need. We cooked a Sunday roast without bother! The beds are comfortable and bathroom a good size. It’s a beautiful ares with lovely walks. We walked across to birchover, the pub there was very friendly. As was the bulls head in youlgreave. Both dog friendly too. I would definitely look at going back. The owner was also very informative and happy to help with any questions or concerns.

The cottage could do with a good clean , here was dust and dirt around the cottage and the carpet seemed not to have been hovered prior to our visit , the kitchen floor hadn’t been mopped either , there was a musky smell in the kitchen when we arrived..

Met our friends at the cottage, the approach to the cottage is very steep and narrow, but it was exactly as described.. the owner posted a helpful video of the path to assist locating the cottage. Nice cosy cottage with a lovely view over the river valley. Ideal location for walking in the local dales. Nice pubs and a small shop in the village. Only 10 minutes by car to Bakewell. Overall a very pleasant stay in a lovely part of the peaks.

Cottage would have got a 10 but the incline to reach it is super steep and very difficult to walk up and down also parking wasn't great either.. ..as in none if you found a spot you had to stay in it because if you moved someone else took it...that being said it was xmas so village was busy...cottage itself looked amazing when we arrived...from the wreath on the door to the large real Christmas tree in lounge it looked fantastic and made us feel super christmassy...all in all we had a great stay lovely village and would recommend The bull for food and drinks...very friendly....would return maybe in the summer next time....

A tranquil setting and lovely cosy cottage for us 2 adults.. The doorstep walks along the river were great. The cottage was well equipped with everything we needed and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others. However, do look for sign called Bank Side, which is the start of the footpath down to River cottage. Bankside is pretty much opposite the Methodist Chapel and just up from pub carpark. A very peaceful and enjoyable location, the steep path up and down keeps you fit!

Contact with owner Mr Clark before we arrived was most helpful, lovely man.. ...and we plan to stay a further two weeks, this is not the end yet - so glad that we took the chance, sight unseen, of booking from our home in Canada for such a long stretch....it has been most restful and wonderful....the many different species of birds chirping and singing all day, the rush of the river down the path, the friendly neighbours and villagers, and the signs of early spring in the blossoms, daffodils, and treebuds....and the lush green of the countryside.....so glad we came here.....

Great little cottage.. Cosy and warm on our arrival. Lovely terrace at the front of the cottage, which looks out over the river and the valley. Would love to return in warmer weather so that we could sit outside and enjoy the view. Great walks from the front door. Good food at the Farmyard Inn, which was very dog friendly.

Lovely cosy cottage in excellent location.. Fantastic fire for winter, lovely terrace for summer- or sunny winter coffee breaks. Directions to cottage need to be more accurate though.

This was our third time at River cottage, we love the peace and tranquility.. It is tucked away and the steep hill never bothered us, it’s worth it when you get to the cottage! Well equipped and very warm and cosy, loved the log burner. The views from the garden are beautiful. It needs a lick of paint in places but it did not bother us. We will return again, thanks to the owners who are very helpful.

Cottage had a lovely atmosphere.. Kids loved the bunk beds and we found the bed in the main bedroom very comfortable. Couldn’t find central heating controls, but we lit the fire for a couple of hours so it was fine. Location very picturesque. Found a cave about 5 mins along riverside path which took me back to my childhood and delighted the kids. They also loved the nearby wildlife garden (signposted from the path down to the cottage). Whilst we found parking space, I wouldn’t describe it as abundant. Local pub busy but excellent food.

September 2018
The property is lovely, well equipped and provided us with a peaceful base to explore.. Whilst it caused us no problem, there is the potential for some visitors to have problems accessing the property. The steep path down to the property from the road would be difficult for anyone with mobility problems, were unfit or had small children, especially when first arriving and then leaving when shuttling luggage, etc. This perhaps should be made more clear in the information.

Absolutely perfect. Stunning cottage and location. Not ideal if you struggle with mobility as there is a bank which you have to walk up and down to bring in luggage but this was all part of the experience for us. Very clean and comfortable, like home from home. Beautiful village and everybody was very friendly
Mr Pye

Stunning cottage and beautiful area perfect for dog walking.. Local pubs were amazing and friendly with delicious grub and all let dogs in.

July 2018
Google earth does not show how steep and uneven the 50m track down to the cottage is.. The unfit or people with a buggy or heavy/wheeled luggage would struggle. Use a back pack! Can't drive within 50m. Neighbours and situation fantastic. The shower and WiFi are fantastic. Tv only did Netflix and YouTube. (Might have been us!) Beds comfortable, lots of pillows. Curtains let too much light in. Huge BBQ. Modernised and fully functional where it matters. Families will love the casual, back to nature, informality and safety of this rural cottage. Best for walking and playing in streams.

I arrived on the monday and found the cottage after asking a local(the lane bankside wasn,t opp the farmyard inn but to the right about on 30yards from the end of the inn car park)and not sign posted.. To get to the cottage was down a steep lane ,path, cobbled,we passed lots of lovely cottages getting to riverside.the cottage was very nice.furniture for us was a bit dull but pleasant.plenty of hot water, and heating if you needed it on.the views from the bed rooms was brill, looking over the little river and valley.the garden was very nice ,wild flowers all over,a nice table and chairs on the front patio, steps going down to the garden.we went down to the river and crossed over a little bridge and walked for miles along the river untill it petered out,we saw all sorts of ducks, trout ,loads of different birds.we even got chased by a herd of mad cows.the village is realy lovely loads of cottages, nooks and craneys.three pubs,a few shops, a butchers.if your eating out i think you can,t go wrong with the farmyard inn,the food is very good and not to pricey ,a good selection,we ate twice there and we recommend booking before you go.every one we met in the village were very friendly and helpfull.if you fancey fish and chips, the george at the end of the village do a fantastic take away(big cod),but i would drive along to the george as its a fair walk by the time you walk up from the cottage(your legs feel there giving up)and a good walk along the main street to the george.yes we would stay there again the location was perfect,.the only draw back was there wasn,t any toilet rolls,(we forgot to bring some) but we left some for next guest.theres no freezer and no ice box in fridge so don,t bring any frozen food unless your eating it the day you arrive

The cottage is cosy and comfortable with a wood burning stove which is delightful on a cold evening. There is a wonderful view over the valley and it is superb dog walking country.

I loved the cosy log fire in the evenings and sitting outside listening to the river which is just below River Cottage. The locals were friendly and the pubs were very welcoming. Overall, this was the very relaxed weekend I needed.

June 2015
At first it was quite a challenge to find... Now I'm someone who can navigate with maps on long walks across country side no problem but finding the cottage was quite a problem. The directions once we got to the Farmyard Inn and what to do after we got there wasn't very helpful and found it the hard way! its a very steep decent down to the cottage and we had a pram and lots of gear to take down which took a few trips... Being a fit young lad too this still proved a slight challenge! But we managed as it was totally worth it when we got to the cottage, the view is breath taking. You over look the river which you can have a good walk along which I recommend, to see all the rainbow trout in there. So quiet too, might get the odd person walking past down the path but always friendly hello's. The cottage it small and really nice, I'm not tall but had to duck a bit once upstairs but it adds to the character! Stayed in the spare room on the double bed (could certainly do with a new mattress... as the springs are virtually popping out so we laid a duvet on top and slept on that) Plenty of amenities to cook with and great facilities. 3 pubs to choose from in the village and a good few circular walks round there! Would recommend for a quiet and peaceful getaway, very close to bakewell but its driving distance or about an hours walk

June 2014
Excellent cottage in a fantastic location with beautiful decor throughout and good amenities. The views are stunning with the only sounds coming from the river and bird life. This is a great cottage with every thing you need for a perfect break in the Peak District. It has a log burner with a starter kit to keep you warm on the first few nights and WiFi for the kids!! The village of Youlgrave is stunning with very friendly dwellers and very helpful people. The 2 pubs are lovely with great Ales and good food, but the George is best by far!! The portions of food are massive and very good quality. We will definitely be coming back and staying here again.

River Cottage was in a great location and had pretty much everything I needed. Plenty of crockery, pans, shower reasonably strong pressure, dishwasher, washer and tumble dryer all useful. Comfy sofa with plenty of room. I would really recommend this cottage for dog owners as the river is only one minute away and there are loads of good local walks.

The cottage was spotlessy clean and very well equipped, everything was in good working order, the only downfall was the walk from the road to the cottage with the luggage, the surrounding area is beautiful and the views spectacular, despite the weather we had a very enjoyable week, Youlgreave is a friendly village, everyone is helpful and will stop to chat, the dog loved it too, the river walks in particular were great.

River cottage is absolutely lovely. We had a wonderful holiday there and thoroughly enjoyed waking up to the views over the Bradford Dale every morning. The cottage itself is very warm and comfortable, having everything we could have needed, and the people of Youlgrave are all so warm and friendly. I even felt relaxed and inspired enough to do a little crafting while I was there and made a little teddy pen holder and bookmark which I left behind as a small "thank you" for a lovely holiday. All in all we had a lovely stay and will definitely visit again with any luck!

me and my family had an amazing time at river cottage we had a few teething problems when we stayed at the property when we contacted the owners who had just taken over the property came to our assistance straight away and dealt with our problem very smoothly they were a very nice and accommodating couple. The property is a lovely nice and relaxing cottage with everything anyone needs. there is a stream at the bottom of the little lane that goes at the side of the property where my 2 and 4 year old loved catching little fish. the location of the cottage is on a steep hill which is easy to get up and down the village has everything you need to enjoy your stay. the village locals are very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay again and recommend it to anyone

It was a lovely surprise to find a bottle of wine and doggy biscuits awaiting us when we arrived! Sadly the previous tennants had not reported flooding the dishwasher and breaking the flush on the loo! However, our stay was very enjoyable and the cottage was very comfortable, apart from the new owner of the nearby cottage moving in her furniture.

This property was perfect for our family holiday, I was accompanying my parents and family dog - all in the twilight of their years! The cottage is in a very steep ravine down to a small river (more a large stream). You can, as mentioned by others, if you wish park at the bottom and walk up if it's a problem, though we didn't bother! Parking at the top on the main road was never a problem - we usually parked just off the 'main' road next to the nearby pub. The cottage is very clean and VERY comfortable. I can only imagine people who complained about cleanliness are not going out walking and bothered about the odd mark on the carpet?! There is a wonderful patio where you can sit sipping your drink after a long days walking and see people struggling up or down the ravine! There are a lot of DVDs and a PS2 with a load of games in the living room that was a nice touch for groups to use at the end of the day. Location is brilliant, couldn't be better for anywhere in the Peaks. Bakewell and Matlock are minutes away for supplies and great walks are everywhere! Thoroughly recommended.
Mrs Snashalls
September 2010

September 2010
Beautiful Location - don't let the steep access put you off - you can drive to bottom when leaving to pack the car. We had a great time - like stepping back in time. Youlgreave is a lovely village and great base for visiting the peak. You can walk through some of the most picturesque dales from the house, stopping off for great food and beer in local villages. Cottage is well maintained and very comfortable - no complaints, but toilet needs fixing.

December 2009
The property in general was very comfortable. In a totally unbiased and truthful opinion the carpet was very unclean in the lounge and there was alot of mould in the bathroom. The two bedrooms were in a good condition and there is outside space. The garden is not child friendly as it has a steep drop. The cottage is situated down a very sharp sloping pathway and is very slippery when wet and is not ideal when carrying luggage. The dog loved the river and had a great time, however the walks are limited and we left two days early. The village activities are limited. All in all we did have a very pleasant stay.

The cottage was very clean and welcoming, it was everything we needed and more. There was a complementary bottle of wine, milk in the fridge, tea and coffee which we thought was a lovely gesture. The scenery and location was absolutely stunning, the village had some nice little shops and pubs which were family friendly and good value for money.

The cottage was clean and the bottle of wine to welcome us was lovely. There was milk in the fridge and plenty of tea and coffee. I will DEFINITELY be going back at the next chance. I was so happy with this holiday. There were plenty of fliers for us to see what was going on around the Peak District, a lovely river at the bottom of the hill, and two pubs serving lovely food nearby. I had such a wonderful time, thank you.
