Holiday home With all the accommodation laid out over one floor, this property has been built to reduce its carbon emissions whilst still offering the class and hospitality you would expect from a well-furnished holiday cottage. As well as boasting features, such as the original beams, the cottage uses geothermal heating to warm the floors during the colder months. Central heating heats the rest of the property, meaning you can enjoy all that the region has to offer even in the winter. During the summer, there is a patio and courtyard for evening barbecues and to simply relax in. With three bedrooms, this tranquil retreat can sleep groups of up to eight people.
Area Situated on the banks of the longest river in Cumbria, the appropriately named River Eden, Soulby is a picturesque hamlet comprising of a few traditional cottages surrounded by rolling countryside. Just two miles away you will find Kirkby Stephen, a small town in the Upper Eden Valley that was formerly in the old county of Westmorland, now Cumbria. This is an area of Cumbria much less well-known than the Lake District, but equally appealing. A traditional market town comprising of historic buildings, cobbled yards, quaint corners and interesting shops, Kirkby Stephen has a station on the famous scenic Settle/Carlisle line and is an ideal centre from which to travel the line. The surrounding area boasts many sites of historic interest including parish churches and castles such as Brougham, Brough, Pendragon and Lammerside.
Region Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
Amenities Geothermal underfloor heating with electric fire. Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, TV with FreeSat, DVD, CD/radio, library of books and games. Fuel and power inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Cot and highchair on request. Off road parking for 4 cars. Shop and pub 2.5 miles. Note: Water provided from the Sykeside borehole which provides spring water, pumped up at very good pressure. Note: This property is all on one level and accessed via a ramp, so may be suitable for the less mobile and wheelchair users.
Very clean, comfortable and spacious cottage a little out of the way maybe but we would recommend this property.. Disappointed he games room locked up without any prior notification but this precaution understandable in the current situation
Mrs Griffiths, July 2020
Rainbow cottage is absolute perfection.. 4 adults, 3 kids no WiFi just pure fun. Pam and Steve the owners are lovely and welcoming. The animals on the farm and the beck where the kids played every night was beautiful. We would highly recommend this place to anybody
Mr Banks, August 2020
Very comfortable cottage, peaceful with beautiful views.. Owners very friendly and helpful.
The accommodation was excellent a very big and spacious barn conversion very quiet and peaceful had use of the field next to the barn to let the dog wonder, property very clean all mod cons, the owners was very helpful and welcoming on arrival shown the basics where everything is and then left to it.. ....
Would highly recommend this barn conversion for anybody who is looking for a quiet and peaceful holiday
Also would recommend going to lake Windermere to do the boat trip....
Pam and her husband were so kind to us during our stay. Really helpful and gave us tons of ideas on walks and activities in the area.
The cottage is immaculate, huge beds with a lovely kitchen/bathroom. The scenery was incredible and we were so pleased with the experience overall. Would definitely stay here again.
We were so happy with our experience at Rainbow cottage.. Pam and her husband were so kind and accommodating- we arrived and they gave us lots of advice on things to do in the area and were even kind enough to drop in everyday to check on us.
The location was fabulous and the cottage was beautiful and immaculate- with so many activities to do in the area.
Would definitely go back!

Our 1st holiday with Sykes wont be our last.. Pam and Stephen (owners) were only next door, on the farm but didnt bother us but to chat in passing. Their cottage is a stunning cowshed conversion which is suitable for wheelchair users. Such an idilic and perfect location to get out and explore. Even with the animals around in the fields we all got super nights sleep. Our family are looking forward to another restful/peaceful/enjoyable holiday back at rainbow cottage in the future. Thankyou
Really difficult to find a large cottage that can also accommodate bringing your horse.. It was perfect for us. You need more places like this.
Cottage was larger than expected.. Stephen and Pam were lovely hosts :)
A stunning, clean and spacious cottage with enough room for everyone to have their own space if need be.. An iron and board available if needed but bring own hairdryer. Kirkby Stephens nearby offers a good choice of places to eat of which some are dog friendly, but would advise booking beforehand for The Black Bull - they hold a quiz night on Thursday evening. The only negative was the market day on a Monday comprising of just three stalls. The shopkeepers very friendly and welcoming. The Lakes, Barnard, Penrith, Carlisle all within an hour's drive or relaxing at the cottage enjoying a barbecue and soaking up the peaceful surroundings as a good second option. A Co-op, butchers, mountainware shop is in Kirkby Stephens as is a petrol station and other independent shops. Highly recommend the cottage.
Rainbow Cottage was fantastic.. You really need to read and follow printed instructions from Pam and Steve the owners, DO NOT follow your Sat Nav or you'll end up driving around the little country lanes like we did. The cottage is to the south of Soulby and is not signposted.
Excellent location for the Dales and the Lakes.. Well fitted out cottage and stunning views. Owners very helpful and even moved a field of sheep to another field for our dogs to run free in. Lovely walks straight from the door. Would highly recommend.
Lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings .. Our hosts were generous and kind. All my party felt safe and at home here and we would love to return.
Fantastic cottage and great for wheelchairs
Friendly owners made us feel so welcome nothing was you much trouble
The photos don’t do the accommodation justice, it is far larger than it appears.. Pam and Steve were great, allowing us to see, feed and hold the new born lambs. You could happily spend a week there without going anywhere as it is a real escape to lovely quiet place. Plenty of walks nearby if you do want to visit the lakes. We will definitely be back.
Sorry for the delay 2017 ? What a lovely holiday we all had the cottage was very clean and well presented, And good access for a wheel chair in and out of every room in the cottage. owners were on hand to help with any issues ?
Adamson & Lothian & Owenson
Very comfortable and spacious cottage in lovely area.. Pam the owner was very helpful, allowing us to store our bikes in her barn and also permitting an additional dog to stay. Highly recommended.
The cottage is very spacious and comfortable. Everything has been thought of that is needed especially in the kitchen. The area is stunning and the owners very friendly and helpful.
Just 1 suggestion......a book for guests to write in their favourite activities or days out so new guests can get ideas of things to do! Our favourite day was climbing up to the 9 standards.....hard going but a great achievement! We only knew of this after being told by the owner.
Definitely recommend this cottage and wI'll definitely book again.
Cottage was roomy and comfortable and we had everything we needed.. Location was beautiful
We stayed at Rainbow Cottage for a week and enjoyed our stay immensely. Our 21yr old son is disabled but the cottage was extremely accessible for him.Having a large wet room was important for us and Rainbow cottage definitely delivered ! Everything you need is here and owners Pam and Stephen will help you with anything else. The location is beautiful surrounded by lots of animals and wildlife- about 2.5 miles to Kirkby Stephen where we dined at the Black Bull twice ( gorgeous steak and Guinness pie!!!) We would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a chilled week !!! Home from home ( dogs loved it too!!!)
I spent literally days trying to find a cottage that would meet our location needs but also the requirements for my disabled sister. This place was perfect. Thoughtfully and lovingly built. Noisy baby was able to stay sufficiently away from others so not to wake the toddler in the other 'wing'.
Pamela is extremely well organised and phoned us in advance to check requirements. Anything we needed, we just asked and they sorted it.
The cottage was very clean and we have stayed in more expensive places that haven't been so well equipped. The walk in shower was a bonus for the wheelchair (although make sure you are more awake than my mum in the mornings who kept nearly walking into it) and the cottage had lots of areas to spend time as smaller groups.
The table tennis area has started a family annual competition complete with trophy. Stephen and Pamela were personable and genuine. Little touches like getting new bats and balls for the table were great.
Lots of places to eat / sit outside.
The highlight of the holiday for me was the birds. Nesting curlew and oyster catchers under your breakfast table, redstarts were just some of our wonderful memories. Recommend binoculars if this is your thing also.
We were very lucky with the weather, spending most days sat under a tree on a blanket. Even though the cottage is next door to the farm, it still feels private. It's a short ten minute drive from Kirkby Stephen. We recommend Archway Chip shop. Massive portions and friendly staff. For disabled walks, we would recommend the viaduct walk. There is a car park, instead of having to 'abandon' your car in the villages. Although, I would recommend checking the parking before leaving for the walk as we found one shut on the day.
There isn't any wifi at the cottage but we found that a bonus as no-one can get hold of you and it was lovely to escape properly.
Fabulous time had by all. Got a bit emotional when we had to leave and return to realism.
It was fantastic to stay in a cottage that was so eminently suitable for my disabled husband who has a motorised wheelchair and also suitable for the family's needs. The cottage was lovely and warm and extremely well equipped.
The owners couldn't have been more pleasant.
This cottage was a warm haven during a cold and wet March/April week. The owners were really welcoming.
Perfect cottage in a lovely location, made more enjoyable by the friendly hosts.
On our arrival we were met by the owner who showed us around everything and was a fantastic host throughout the holiday. The accommodation was very big and comfortable and very well thought out with fabulous country views all around. We would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday, a perfect holiday retreat.
Our holiday was lovely. The owners were very friendly and couldn't do enough. Lovely welcome gifts on arrival and the cottage was beautiful. We would definitely return to this cottage. We had plenty do do around and about and it was lovely for relaxing in as well.
The lay out of the cottage was great for a large family, very spacious and practical. The cottage was secluded and very peaceful. The games room is a bonus, and there is a large selection of books and games which we enjoyed playing on an evening. Great location for visiting Lake District, Dales and surrounding areas. Beautiful area and the children loved trying to catch the little fish in the small river that runs by the cottage.
Fantastic location, being on a working farm in Spring was heavenly. Fresh air, fabulous views and friendly owners. We had a chilled holiday where the children were entertained by nature.
A lovely cottage which comfortably accommodated 6 adults and 2 children plus a collie. The owners, were very helpful and accommodating. A really nice quiet unspoilt part of England.
The cottage was very nice. The children were delighted being able to feed the horses and see the sheep. The owners were lovely, kind people- nothing was to much for them. Got some amazing photos of the children in the snow and sleighing down the hill. What an amazing adventure for the children .
Roomy and comfortably, warm all the time even in the worst weather. Very good for coming back to after a day on the hills. Everything about the property was perfect.
The owners were very welcoming and friendly and nothing was to much trouble. The property was spacious and comfortable and was set in delightful surroundings. I do not have the words to express how good this cottage is and how this area of the country appears to be an undiscovered gem with many beautiful and quiet lanes and villages.
A superb conversion of farm buildings to the highest standard. Wheelchair accessible and a wet room. The geothermal underfloor heating works very well. Plenty of room for 6 people comfortably. Excellent hosts-made to feel very welcome.
This property is outstanding in terms of quality of loaction and internal fittings/fixtures.
Ideal for less mobile/wheelchair users with huge wetroom and loads of space.
Graet welcome from owners who live in adjacent farm.
Easy to travel to sightseeeing locations - The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle is outstanding.
Dont miss the fish and chips at Mulberrys in Kirkby Stephen!
This cottage is on a working farm and the owners were more than helpfull . The peace & quiet was wonderfull, and being able to sit and watch the animals and wildlife in the nextdoor field with the stream running through it was idylic. The property itself was a little quirky in its layout , but the bathroom was ideal for the member of our party with a wheelchair .
A very enyoyable stay , the only slight concern of ours , was the entrance walkway to the front door. Which was very uneven and hard to negotiate if unsteady on your feet ! Otherwise a very nice place to stay!
Mr Mrs Jackson
The barn conversion was so well thought out. For our wheelchair bound aunt it was great, plenty of room and the wet room was superb.
Loved the isolation of the cottage and it's setting on the farm. The quality of the kitchen equipment exceptional. My seven year old son loved the freedom of living on a farm and being able to feed and stroke the horses. The table tennis room was also well used.
Mrs R Lucas
Rainbow Cottage is in an idyllic spot away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The perfect place to rest. The games room was great for the family, and the layout of the bungalow was good. A welcome gift is always a nice touch and was much appreciated. The only thing it lacked was wi-fi, something that would have been considered a luxury just a few years ago but that is now considered a necessity, especially by the younger generation! All in all though, 5*, we loved it! Thank you.
Very nice owners, could not have been more helpful!
Just returned from a great long weekend at Rainbow Cottage. All the comments made by previous holidaymakers, the location, the accommodation, helpfulness of the owners, I fully support. In addition, the cottage provides excellent facilities for wheelchair users, easy access to the cottage, lovely patio area, wide doors inside and an excellent wet room with aids which are there if you need them, unobtrusive if not. A great weekend. Thank you.
Enjoyed a wonderful weekend at Rainbow Cottage, very nice position. Enjoyed several walks from the cottage. Games room was a bonus!
The Cottage owner was always very helpful. The cottage is beautiful, very spacious and comfortable. The location is wonderful too making it a very peaceful break. Lots of walking to be done around the area. We highly recommend The Bay Horse Inn, Winton. We all enjoyed our little break and will definitely book again and recommend to friends and family. Thank you so much.
A very pleasant place to stay with plenty to do in the surrounding countryside. My wife especially commented that she thought that this was the best equipped holiday home that we have stayed in. It suited us 'down to the ground' with our grandsons making special usage of the table tennis room.
Lovely cottage with all the facilities you'd need. Lovely wetroom, kitchen, large bedrooms etc. Having a games room helped with the kids as the weather was not good!! Very nice owner who made us very welcome and was around without being intrusive at all; very friendly and helpful. Having sheep, horses and ducks at the edge of the property made it even more special.
Accommodation exceeded expectations. Property also very dog friendly with use of meadows for exercise. Surrounded by beautiful scenery - in the Lakes, Yorkshire Dales and Durham Dales. Host very welcoming and friendly. Also witnessed the birth of a calf on the working farm - a first! Amazing.
The owner was fantastic - very friendly and welcoming. Area was very quiet so if you're looking to get away from it all, this is ideal. Horses in fields just topped off the beautiful surroundings and the sheep and ducks contributed to the ambience.
The cottage was the most comfortable holiday home we have stayed in - proper sized beds, a well equipped kitchen and super shower, coupled with the underfloor heating all made the experience very satisfactory. The owner was very helpful and friendly without being in any way intrusive. The area is very beautiful and not at all crowded. Having Kirkby Stephen on the doorstep made self catering easy.
The cottage was lovely and had everything we needed. We had a great time!
It was a lovely relaxing atmosphere, welcomed by the owner. The cottage was lovely, definitely go again. Lovely views of the countryside, just a brilliant holiday.
We really enjoyed our stay here. Farmer Stephen is very friendly, and even let us watch the lambs being born! Great for the boys to run around the field and wade in the stream.
Lovely location, beautiful barn conversion and friendly owner.
We stayed for a long weekend, had a great time. Cottage was big enough for all 5 of us and the under floor heating was an added bonus. Great stay, would definitely stay here again.
Mr Mrs Boyer
Very peaceful location. Great outside area for children to explore.
Excellent accommodation! The whole family were impressed. Everyone would happily recommend this property and the owner was very welcoming.
An lovely cottage in a great location. We were made very welcome. Very spacious inside the cottage and the stream and land for children to play in was excellent - we all loved the friendly horse. We hope to return again.
Cottage was beautiful and the owner very friendly and helpful. The cottage was perfect for people with dogs as the floors were all slate tiles and it was one level. It was an excellent location. I would definitely recommend this property.
Great cottage and excellent facilities.
The cottage was fabulous size. Light and airy with plenty of space for 2 teenagers and 4 adults.
The house was very warm & cosy with comfortable beds.
Everything we needed in the house and kitchen.
Landlord/owever was very helpful and greeted us with fresh flowers and a very nice bottle of red.
Will definately be visiting again.
Even the horrendous flooding and rain didn't spoil our relaxing weekend at Rainbow Cottage.
The location of this barn conversion outside the village of Soulby, down a long pitted track, was certainly secluded.
The field next to the house with a stream running through it was ideal for the grandchild and the dog.
The barn, all on one level, was also ideal for the grandchild to ride on the wooden trike bike kindly provided by the owner, and the bottle of wine & flowers were a nice gesture.
We used this house as a base for a family party we were attending at a hotel in nearby Appleby, and even invited a few of the family back after the party for a few glasses of fizz, and sat in the lounge ( plenty of seats ) arounfd the clever and very warming gas fire.
The location was perfect for two small children in to every thing. It was a safe environment for them and as a working farm had plenty to keep them interested.
Soulby is a beautiful village and has recently received an award. Local eating places were of a high standard.
The accomodation was comfortable and 'children friendly' I would definitely consider it again when I have the energy to take on two small children again.
The cottage was extremely cosy - especially in such terrible weather. Very spacious and comfortable.
Great location. Super cottage with fabulous underfloor heating which made the property so cozy. Very peaceful location with great walks nearby. Very good childrens indoor play area in Kirkby Stephen.
Mr Mrs Gorrod
We loved the cottage and are hoping to go back next year if possible.
Location and the property were really good. Quiet, peaceful surroundings.
The field and stream were fantastic for the children to play in. A great location for easy access to the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District.
The friendliness of the owner; he could not do enough for us and made us very welcome.
We liked the location of the cottage, fairly secluded, very spacious cottage, liked the under floor heating and the children loved playing table tennis in the games room.
Mr Mrs Banks
The peaceful location.
Newly refurbished property, well designed and very spacious.
The cottage is very well maintained, with character but plenty of mod cons and there is lots of space. Evenings on the terrace with horses running in the field, geese and goats were delightful. The children enjoyed having a games room to use.
Well laid out property and very private even though two rental properties on site. You never saw your neighbours. Very dog friendly, our dog had a meadow all to himself most of the time.
The peace and tranquility of the cottage location. It was nice to wake-up to the sound of bird song. The cottage was all that we expected and more and we cannot wait to go back.
Quiet rural location.
Fantastic accommodation within a lovely setting, would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing break with plenty of walks.
The whole property was beautiful. Little finishing touches made all the difference. The owner was extremely friendly. Our dog had a fantastic time running loose in the field.
We loved the field and the stream next door, great for dogs. Perfect location for walks and scenery.
