This upside down converted barn/reading room is the perfect getaway from it all. We had a fantastic week walking and enjoying the beautiful views from this cottage. Friendly neigbours and the owner is just lovely. No complaints and will definitely come back...thank you for a lovely holiday!

We were more that satisfied in the cottage we stayed in.. It was lovely and clean heating was on when we got in it was lovely and warm. Everything we needed was provided, we would be more than happy to stay there again if we needed to. Mrs Scott the owner was very pleasant, accommodating and her little barn conversion is a credit to her it’s really lovely. Would highly recommended friends and family to go her and her barn.

This was our 7th visit to this cosy cottage.. There have been some changes since our previous visit, enlarged sitting area, larger TV, new cooker and there are lovely new carpets - so it’s better than the photos on the website. We love the views from the cottage and the great walks right from the door, even In the snow that we had this year. The friendly owner ensured the cottage was warm on our arrival but we didn’t see her until we left as we had no problems. Great food & drink at The Strathmore Arms (5 mins walk), means little cooking was needed at the cottage.

Absolutely beautiful scenery around the cottage; lots to do and see without having to take the car anywhere.. There is also a pub in the village but the nearest shop is 3 miles away, so worth taking whatever supplies you need. The house is extremely well situated for long and short walks and very comfortable and cosy (the heating was efficient!). It is a beautiful building and village and all the necessary amenities are provided in the cottage (apart from towels, but saw this on a previous review and brought our own). Big kitchen and amazing views from the table while having breakfast over the fields and of sheep and cows grazing. The owner kindly let us bring two small dogs, so worth asking if you are in the same situation. We had a relaxing and very enjoyable time and hope to return soon.

Holwick is the perfect location if you want to enjoy stunning countryside and a real break from town or city life.. With long or short walks easily accessible directly from the cottage, it’s a perfect place for people who enjoy being outside. The cottage has wonderful views from the living area. We loved watching the changing weather over the dales and the cows, sheep, rabbits and pheasants in the fields just outside. The owner is very helpful, when we couldn’t work out how to light the oven, we rang her and she arrived within 10 mins. The local pub is very friendly and has a great selection of beers, ciders, good food and a beautiful garden. I agree with previous reviews that the living area decor at the cottage could do with updating and that the small garden would be a very pleasant place to sit and enjoy the stunning views but is in need of some TLC. Overall we had a lovely week and would recommend a visit.

This is an outstanding location for everything you would want from an outdoors holiday..

July 2018
Lovely cottage for 2 in a lovely area .. Plenty of places to go for long walks and to admire the scenery . Our holiday was ruined after a road traffic collision (not my fault) with a swedish motorcyclist who was riding on the wrong side of the road left us with no car for half of the week . Even though we have courtesy car cover in our insurance policy the courtesy car provider does not allow dogs in their cars .So no replacement car until we got home . Had £500 cover in the policy to get ourselves home but again couldnt hire a car because of their no dogs in car policy . The only taxi firm near to where we were staying was the same - no dogs . Eventually found a taxi firm from near to where we live who would transport us home with the dog which nearly cost as much as we paid for the cottage .

This holiday cottage is not exactly as described by Sykes Cottages.. I do not know if this is down to Sykes or the owner. The cottage is in need of updating and refurbishing. The fixtures and fittings are worn and some are broken ie the blinds and curtain retainers. I had to repair the toilet seat just to use it. The site describes the cottage as having a garden and patio seating area. The garden is unkempt and there is no patio - the whole garden is ten feet square. The parking is ok but shared with a neighbour so you must park tight to your side. The parking area and path to the cottage is done in large cobble stones which are difficult underfoot. If you are elderly or not particularly fleet of foot you may find this a problem. We are not elderly but my wife managed to fall within the first ten minutes. The steps up to the cottage are steep for access and luggage loading. You can enter and exit via the bathroom door. The stairs in the cottage are steep and poorly lit - not aided by a dark coloured carpet. If you have a dog its easy for it to fall down the stairs. The cottage is upside down so you get good views from the upstairs windows. Please be aware that although the cottage is secluded the lane outside is used for farm traffic and whilst we were there it seemed the speed limit was non existent with vehicles flashing by. The caveat is to keep your dog on a lead because if it strays from the area around the cottage it may well succumb to a LandRover and trailer passing at forty miles an our. The local area is very nice and we spent our time exploring the lovely scenery and the Lake District. The cottage is ok if you are just needing a place to base yourself but do not expect luxury fixtures and fittings. The sofa in the lounge area is poor and the tv is tiny (we had to fit new batteries to fix the remote). Overall would we stay here again? - that would have to be a no.

For peace and quiet in the beautiful of settings this little cottage met the criteria and more! It's has everything you need - my parent and I didn't want to leave. With the high force waterfall a lovely walk away and the town of Middleton down the road for shopping you have everything you need to really get away from every day life and relax. The owner was most lovely coming to check on us to make sure we had everything we needed. All the community are very friendly and welcoming. A return stay is definitely on the cards for us.

It was such a lovely cottage and a lovely area.. I would definitely stay again. The only thing I would perhaps of changed was the sofa. It's very small for two people. Perhaps a little corner sofa. Everything else was perfect.

January 2016
The property is a converted farm building of some sort and is reasonably furnished in a 'holiday home' style. Nothing exceptional either way, not outstandingly bad, not outstandingly good, its 'nice' ,perhaps a little bit beginning to fray around the edges, Located in a small hamlet, and here perhaps my own prejudices will reflect on the review, its not barren/ desolate/ isolated but when youre about 25 mins from the bright lights big city of Barnard Castle (sense the sarcasm in the last phrase) you get the picture that you are 'getting away' from it somewhat. Whilst I was after a fashion able to get internet access, mobile coverage was non-existent. Its nice, the owner is lovely, but I sense the last of that type of holiday i'd do alone.
Mrs Friday
June 2015

October 2014
Meadows Edge is located in an ideal location for walking or just relaxing. With no mobile Signal and very limited wifi you can escape from the every day hustle and bustle. This upside down cottage allows you to relax and look out onto amazing views of Holwick Scar and surrounding countryside. The cottage is cosy even during some very inclement weather. The boiler however is located directly behind the bedroom so may disturb light sleepers. Surprised to find that no towels are provided or a basic welcome pack. (Perhaps we have been spoiled by other letting agents?) Local pub is just minutes away and serves some pretty decent meals.
Mrs Over
July 2014
The views from the cottage were fantastic, a lovely quiet area, very friendly people, abundance of wildlife on the doorstep and nice big mugs to have a proper cup of tea.

March 2014
Great views from living area upstairs. Good setup internally. Really would like to use in summer when can make best use of garden. Only one little thing for us was the boiler was right by your head in bed, so sleeping for me was an issue. For anyone who sleeps lightly this might be an issue. Otherwise fab!!

January 2014

The location is excellent. There are stunning walks within 5 minutes of the cottage. I enjoy the calm and friendly nature of the area. I feel very secure and would have no hesitation on going on walks alone. Everyone is friendly. The local shops provide everything you require. We know we will make a return visit as this holiday was just about perfect.

January 2013
My partner and i work in the city and wanted to get away from it all for a week, and thats exactly what we got from Meadows Edge. We were greeted by the owners daughter who lives down the lane, she was very friendly and offered her assistance if we needed it at anytime while we were there. The Cottage is off the beaten track, well kept and has everything you would need for a relaxing break, you will find every utensil you can think of in the kitchen! It has excellent views from all upstairs windows, cosy bedroom downstairs with a modern bathroom en suite. The cottage is less than 5 minutes away (walking) from the friendly local pub which does great meals and 10 minutes(driving) to shops. Lots to do in the area, farmers market in Barnard Castle, walks, High Force Waterfall is a must and is only 20 minutes away in the car. Overall we had a great stay even when the weather was bad we cuddled up on the sofa with the heating on and watched the world go by from the comfort of the warm cosy cottage. We will definately be going back for more in 2013.

The cottage was beautiful . Perfect and cozy for two , we arrived in the night so were astounded by the beautiful views when we woke the next day . The local pub was very friendly and inviting and the food was beautiful perfectly priced and very generous portions were a added bonus ! The walks were a little hard to figure out but once we got on the right track we were could really taken in the beautiful surroundings . The cottage was well equipt but make sure to bring towels ! This gorgeous quirky little cottage is in a beautiful location, like stepping into a corner of paradise. The scenery from every window was panoramic, the cottage was warm and inviting. The owner of the cottage was welcoming, and although the place is set as if in the middle of beyond, the nearby pub is great and the local people that we met were wonderfully warm and inviting. We will most certainly be going back, again and again I suspect!

My wife and I stayed at the cottage for the last week in March, leaving on Good Friday. We had an excellent time for the whole week, with no negative moments. The cottage was very cozy with brilliant views across and down the dale and the village pub was very friendly, the local Sunday walkers even shared their 'cheese board' with us. Helen, the landlady of the pub, proved be a wonderful host. On our last day there, we went for a walk along the dale, arriving at the cottage in lovely spring sunshine, within a minute, we had a white-out! A superb cottage and location - we'll be back!

Stayed in this cottage over the Easter Period and had such a great time. We had snow outside on the evening we arrived but the cottage was very warm and cosy and the owner who lives nearby came and took us around and welcomed us. The fresh dafodils etc. which were supplied was a very nice touch. The Cottage is gorgous and very comfortable with outstanding views out over Holwick and Teesdale. It is in a very quiet area with a pub within walking distance and shops can be found in nearby Middleton. I would certainly recommend this property and would love to return soon.

March 2010
The owners are very friendly and welcoming; that gets you off to a great start. We loved the views from every window in the living space - many rabbits to watch. It was heavily snowing all the time we were there, which meant we were unable to do much walking, but it was very cosy to be sitting watching the snow with the views from the comfort of the living room. The only small downside is that it was an exceptionally cold week (we were snowed in) and with the bedroom being downstairs, it was a little chilly - but not enough to effect our time there. We will definately be back.

After a stressfull time this cottage break helped revive my good spirits. The magnificent views from the cottage and fantastic local walks helped us to totally relax. The cottage was vey comfortable and the owners helpful and made us feel welcome. I would loved to have booked this year again but circumstances won't allow us to book ahead. I'm praying for an unlikely cancellation for this very popular cottage nearer the holiday season.

The isolation of the cottage, with only farm vehicles passing, and the fact that some wonderful walks were right on the doorstep made this an ideal base for exploring the countryside. After a full day outdoors it was great to come back to a lovely warm cottage that provided views across the fields, enhanced by the fact that Meadows Edge was an 'upside-down' property.

Lovely place, fantastically peaceful, just the right spot to rest and recuperate. Friendly owners whose farmhouse kitchen restaurant did an amazing cooked breakfast. Highly recommend a visit.

The location is stunning and the cottage is lovely and cosy- all a couple could ask for. We will be returning to Holwick with our family, and finding out what the bigger cottages are like.

Compact yet ideal as a base for two people. The ideal location to chill out and recharge your batteries. Surrounding scenery is breath taking. A very peaceful location. Would definitely revisit, fantastic holiday!

The best thing about the holiday was the setting. We absolutely loved the North Pennines. We enjoy walking so it was perfect for it. We loved walking along the River Tees, which was just a few minutes away from the cottage. The cottage was small but cosy and we loved going back there after a day out walking.

The seclusion and the freedom to walk in beautiful natural surroundings after months of city living. The cosy fire after wet, windy, foggy days out.

Cottage was very cosy, essential for winter time, and we had our fair share of mist and rain! Walking in the area is superb and several walks can be done straight from the cottage.

The farm kitchen and the Scott family made the holiday special. We will be returning and hope to try one of the larger properties, and then we can bring more of our family. This has to be one of the best holidays we have had. Met some locals at the pub and enjoyed each others company.
