Lovely place to stay and the cottage is cosy and welcoming. The owner is absolutely lovely and really cares about you having a great stay. It’s a smashing historical cottage with a beautiful bedroom and living area that has been furnished up to a very high standard. Really nice carrot cake left as well which was a warm and caring touch. Alston the area is unique and has terrific countryside surrounding it. Great pubs and shops around a cobbled square which was very picturesque. Really excellent stay.

Kings cottage was amazing from start to finish... I don't know where to beging with the great features this cottage has, it's cosy and historic with exposed beams and all the features you would expect of any cottage. Val the owner was great, very helpful with everything and it was a pleasure to talk to her... She even left us a cake for when we arrived :) Our first stay in kings cottage was amazing... We will be staying again in the future :) Amazing cottage in an amazing part of england

This was a walking holiday, doing walks in the local area.. Alston is also central for further afield, Hadrian's Wall, Durham City, Teesdale, Lake District. The town has all of the amenities required for a successful holiday. The town & the surrounding countryside are very hilly & may not be suitable for people with mobility problems The cottage is in a quiet & historic part of the town two minutes walk from the town centre. The only difficulty would be parking a large car outside of the property, but their are plenty of alternative parking in the town.

Fabulous week at Kings Cottage.. Lovely compact cottage in wonderful location. On arrival the owner (Val) had very kindly left us cake, milk, tea bags and doggie treats!! The cottage is very clean and well equipped. Alston is an excellent base to explore the Lakes. We had the added bonus of perfect weather. We will definitely be back

We enjoyed our stay at King's Cottage, the cottage was clean and comfortable especially the bed.. We spoke to the owner before arriving and she was very welcoming and provided lots of information about the village. We appreciated the milk and cake that was left for us.We were able to park directly outside the cottage without any issues. The village was quiet and relaxing with some interesting shops and a visit to the South Tynedale Railway is a must, especially as they are very dog friendly.

Kings Cottage was brilliant.. The owner had thought of everything, the little touches were great...i.e. she had left, a cake, milk, dog biscuits and a birthday card for my husband. It is tastefully furnished, cosy and relaxing. The sleigh bed was soooooo comfy. I would recommend this cottage to anyone. Alston it's self has very friendly natives. The shops are two minutes walk away.

Liked the cottage - cosy and clean- and the location.. In the middle of a pretty little village, with a coop store and three pubs within three seconds walking distance. Two beautiful river walks , also three seconds away, suited our dog very much. Lots of things to do and see nearby, such as Adrian's wall, Ullswater with steamers and beautiful walks, and a few pretty towns with little shops. Cumbria landscapes while driving around are impressive.

Kings cottage is in a quiet mews in the lovely town of Alston. It's a beautifully kept property with a well equipped kitchen and large lounge with very comfy sofas and a gas fuelled woodburner. Upstairs there's a spacious bedroom with the most comfortable bed ever and a bathroom. The owner has thoughtfully renovated the property throughout and it's really like home from home with a homemade cake to welcome you on arrival. The cottage is a few minutes walk to the town which has various shops and amenities. We loved it. Hopefully you will too!!

March 2017
Fantastic cottage although the instructions on how to find it weren't very easy to follow.. The cottage itself was beautifully furnished and really comfortable. Easy access to the town and also to open countryside. The owner was really friendly and helpful when I called to ask about key collection, recommending local places to walk and eat and she'd even left a cake which I thought was a lovely touch. Alston is peaceful and the locals were very friendly. Very dog friendly too! Lots of walks close by and the pubs are all dog friendly which was great. Only issue was parking. If you have a larger car don't attempt to drive down to the cottage as there are very few places to turn round again! Other than that a perfect spot. Thank you!

Holiday cottage was comfy warm ,clean and very welcoming.. Would stay again in a heartbeat. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for the owners. Could not have asked for anything more. Nice pubs to have meals in a 5 minutes walking distance . Good parking and although we went to relax and do as little as possible felt like we had missed out on seeing what was on our doorstep. People from all nation's raving about the area. We have stayed in another two properties in Alston one was an apartment and one a hotel. Kings cottage far surpasses them both .

This is a very sensibly renovated cottage with accommodation ideal for a couple who want to explore the very beautiful and unspoilt North Pennines AONB - well deserving of the acronym. The cottage is situated in the middle of Alston, a small market town. The town is charming, could have been used for the Hovis ad, cobbled streets etc. Plenty of very good pubs serving excellent beer and pub grub (we liked "The Angel", a stone's throw from the cottage). The accommodation comprises a large open plan sitting room and sensible galley kitchen on the ground floor, with a large double bedroom and a decent bathroom on the second floor. All very clean, cosy and well equipped, can't fault it, would happily go back again. The owner is happy for pets to stay (not in the bedroom), and we went with our dog (who also apparently much enjoyed the fresh air and day long walks). Thank you Mrs Duncan, we enjoyed our stay very much. A few words to the wise - there is good mobile coverage in Alston, but not in the surrounding area. Outside term time there are no local buses - we took a very nice 11 mile ramble to the Lamley viaduct up the Pennine Way, picnic etc en route, with the intention of calling a cab for the return trip - but then lobster potted with no signal for my mobile provider ("3"), so had to walk home again... Better for such prospective 1-way walks to get the cab out and to then walk home ... cab numbers are posted outside the town hall/tourist information centre.

Just back from a week's stay at King's Cottage in Alston. What a fantastic little spot. The cottage is ideal, in a fabulous location close to both the town and the country. It's dog friendly, so we could take our hound with us. King's Cottage has one bedroom, yet is quite spacious. The lounge area is big and has two good sized sofas. The kitchen is well equipped and made all the more welcoming with a homemade cake and tea tray waiting when we arrived, which was a lovely touch. There is plenty of local information available, including a book of local walks which are all on the doorstep. There's plenty to see in walking distance, including the waterfall just a few minutes down the lane. It's a lovely spot for a quiet getaway to recharge and escape the rat race.

We stayed here from 5th to 13th Sept 2014 and had a brilliant time. The cottage was excellent, there was everything you could need. It was just like being at home. Val, the owner was extremely helpful and had the place spotless. Her mum even made us a lovely tea cake. I can thoroughly recommend this place. Alston itself is a lovely market town with a good few shops in it. Be prepared to walk up some hills though as the streets are quite hilly. I can really say that this was one of the loveliest places we have stayed for a long time. The weather was great too so that made it all the better.

This cottage was very well presented. Cozy, comfortable, it really did feel just like being at home. I did arrive a little early having had a long but trouble free journey and did meet the family that own it, and they are lovely people. The kitchen had everything you could need, the lounge was very comforable, and the bedroom was large and the bed very welcoming and comfortable also. The situation of the property is also very good as it is quiet at night but only seconds from the pubs and eateries of alston in one direction, and yards from a lovely walk by the river in the other direction. I was there on my own with my dog but I would happily recommend this to any couple. I do hope to return here at some time.

Nice cottage well kept and in good location. Ideal for 2 people.Cottage is 3 min walk from the main street of Alston. Had never been to this town before and it was well worth a visit. It is ideally placed for walking and travelling on to the lake district.Having been however it was not the sort of place that I would say I must go back there. After a days walking or driving there are a few pubs where you could spend a relaxing evening. Our favourite was the Angell Inn which was small cosy and friendly . On the opposite side of the scale we found the Turks Head to be awful. A lot of beer was out of stock and I am afraid the attitude was oh well you will just need to have something else. For a one off week Alston is worth the trip.

We enjoyed the location of the cottage; every amenity was within 5 minutes in the town, including a very well stocked Co-op. It was a great pleasure to drive on the scenic empty roads and it was a good centre for attractions such as Beamish, and Settle-Carlisle. There is also a very nice local golf course with an honesty box.

This cottage turned out to be more spacious, modern, and comfortable than I was expecting. The lounge was a good size with 2 sofas, and a 32" tv. The kitchen, bathroom and bedroom were all spacious with modern amenities which didn't spoil the old fashioned charm of the cottage itself. The cottage is located off the main road, down a sidestreet. The upside is that it is quiet. The downside is that parking can be a bit onerous, especially if the neighbour is parked there. Alston itself is a pleasant market town with a few nice walks available such as alongside one of its 2 rivers. If you are prepared to travel 20 miles you can reach places such as Ullswater, Hadrian's Wall, and High Force waterfall. There are a few pubs, cafes, restaurants, and takeaways in town. Having not spent any time in this area before, I found plenty to do in the week I was there and would recommend to others.

Loved being close to the small local shops and also the rural side of the village. Didn't have to use the car at all. Everyone was very friendly. Great local walks,we were able to get out and explore the local rivers and waterfalls by foot. Beautiful.
