Richmond, the old market town at the gateway to Swaledale, sits on a conspicuous hilltop position to the north of the River Swale. Its cobblestone streets and small alleyways, or wynds, are home to almost nine centuries of bustling history and distinct personality. There are magnificent walks to be had, such as the Castle Walk, which is a spectacular terrace stroll beneath the castle walls, or a walk along the River Swale.
