Self-Catering Reviews

Mrs Bennett
October 2020
A very warm and comfortable residence.. Very spacious ( there were only 2 of us - because we dislike being cramped). The place was very homely. A very well equipped kitchen which was perfect as we self catered all food all week. Wi fi on my phone was poor, but worked better upstairs. The laptop didn't have a problem though. The house had a lot of character with watercolour paintings in every room of local scenes. Its situation about 3 miles inland from the coast was perfect for access to all the coastal places we wanted to visit.

Very roomy cottage with an extremely helpful owner who wanted to make sure we had everything we needed.. It is an older property but was warm and welcoming. It is in an excellent location, close to excellent beaches at Beadnell, Bamburgh, Low Newton and Embleton as well as the town of Alnwick wihh attractions of the Castle and Gardens.

This is a fantastic cottage, which significantly exceeded our expectations.. It is very convenient for exploring northern Northumberland, and is a lovely place to return to after a day out. The property has everything that you need, and Pat is a wonderful, kind, and friendly host. We would highly recommend.

They say that the way to a mans heart is through his stomach, so to find a complimentary freshly made Lemon Drizzle cake made my day! !! Mrs. Russell (Pat) greeted Maggie (my 11 year old rescue Greyhound) and me on our arrival and made us both feel "at home" straight away. The accommodation is just how you see in the photo's of Ivy Cottage. It is a warm and welcoming place to rest you weary head after a day visiting such a wonderful part of the country. Beadnell is well worth visiting, it has a lovely beach and is only 3 miles from the cottage. I recommend Pilgrims if you want good freshly made cakes and sandwiches if you go (and you MUST go) to Holy Island. Take a walk round the walls in Berwick. I took a trip on the Berwick Boat Trips and watched in amazement as the dolphins jumped about 4' out of the water and how some of them came right up to the boat. Alnwick castle and Alnwick garden are well worth a visit as is Chillingham Castle and do NOT miss seeing the Wild White Cattle. Have a trip on one of Billy Shields boats out to the Farne Islands to see seals and all the bird life (puffins/terns/etc) and if you have children or if you yourself enjoy walking on acres and acres of undisturbed golden sand then you MUST go to Bamburgh the sea side village with not a slot machine or bingo hall to be seen!!! This part of Northumberland is Heaven on Earth.

The Cottage was lovely, very well equipped and in an outstanding location.. It was as described but better than we expected, the outside photograph doesn't do it justice.

What looks like quite a small cottage on the website is, in reality, quite spacious and cleverly laid-out (though I kept going through the wrong door - finding myself in a bedroom instead of the kitchen).. Mrs Russell is a lovely lady and the house immaculate. The sound of trains on the railway line is a mere "hush!" like a boiler quietly switching on - and does not intrude - my wife is a very light sleeper!. I am loath to recommend the place too much as we'd want to be able to book it again ourselves.

Our 4th visit to Ivy Cottage with a 5th booked for new year and 6th visit in May next year! We love coming here, the cottage is very clean and tidy, with everything you require. Pat (the owner) is an absolute delight and is so helpful. She will go out her way to help. I have already left a review in the past so I don't want to repeat myself too much. What I would say is that anyone who is thinking of staying here to please not take much notice of any negative comments regarding Ivy Cottage (not that there are many) I think people's expectations are just different, and people want a bit too much sometimes,. However if you are looking for a peaceful holiday in a place that is clean, presentable, quiet and very friendly then do not look any further than Ivy Cottage. (In January next year the cottage is being completely redecorated as well) For anyone worrying about the train line, this really is not a problem, from the bedrooms you cannot hear them as they face the back, and even in the lounge you can just hear a slight rumble as they pass, it has never been a problem for us or 90% of other guests that stay here on looking through other reviews. Thank you Pat as always, and we very much look forward to our New Year Visit!!

What a lovely home from home holiday accommodation.. Helpful owner and plenty of superb scenery and activities all within a short or reasonable drive. Would definitely go back.

July 2018
The cottage looked really small in the picture but it was like a tardis.. The host was extremely welcoming and couldn't have been more helpful. She was able to provide us with many additional aides for my disabled partner and saved us carrying so much. We had a very enjoyable holiday and it was a great base to explore a lovely area from. Would definately go back. Although there is a very busy rail crossing about 50 yards away, it was not noticeable from the inside.

I think the website needs updating.. The balcony was full of bird mess and bird feeders, over all it was very dirty. There was no key to the back door. The owner stated that we didn't need to lock it as there was no crime in the area. The cottage was dirty throughout. Will not recommend to any one.Suggest you need to improve the way these cottages are rated. Came home with a nasty stomach bug,say no more!!!! Roger Barnett.

December 2017
We absolutely love it here.. The owner is extremely friendly and very approachable. The Cottage is very clean and cozy and has everything you need. There is plenty to do in the area, the small beach at Beadnell is just 5 minutes down the road, and you can reach Alnwick in 15 minutes and Berwick upon Tweed in less than half an hour. The cottage runs 40 yards away from the East Coast Mainline, which wasn't a problem for us as we love trains!! But for those not so keen once inside you cannot hear the trains and you can easily forget they are there. I cannot recommend it here enough, my only regret is that we didn't find this property sooner! Looking forward to our next visit in a few months

Stayed here 6th September for a week what a great location very handy for Seahouses , Holy Island , Berwick on Tweed , lots of castles to see and a must visit to Cragside House NT. It is close to Chathill railway station and crossing but not a problem. The rooms are very spacious upstairs bedroom has its own bathroom across the hall with bath and very large walk in shower, similar the downstairs room has en suit facility. A very nice gesture was the milk and a cake when we arrived. Thanks to Mrs Russell. Would recommend this holiday cottage.

We received a warm welcome from the owner with a lovely cake.. The property was always warm and this was especially appreciated as the weather was less than warm - all fog and drizzle. The cottage had plenty of space for two couples and was conveniently located with easy access to both the A1 and the coast.

It was a good size for two of us with a lovely size sitting room. The books were great, off road parking and a warm welcome from owners. Paintings done by owners were displayed in the cottage. Lots to see and do in the area. We ordered a Tesco delivery for about an hour after we had arrived. This came on time and gave the basics for the week.. Local shops were a few miles away and it saved us going out again before our evening meal.

We had a great week in this very comfortable cottage everything we could want was to hand, Mrs Russell even left us a home baked lemon drizzle cake, milk, tea, coffee etc., we had brought our own but it was all there if needed. The cottage was right next to the railway crossing but we soon got used and didn't really notice the frequent trains whizzing past. The coast was just a short drive away and we visited all of the little towns and villages and Lindisfarne (Holy Island) even ventured up to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Sight seeing and beaches make this a great place for a family holiday and the house had books, videos, games all making sure a rainy day would be catered for although we had wall to wall sunshine and the sun porch entrance with it's little table and chairs made an ideal place for breakfasting. Mr Russell is an artist and we enjoyed a look round his studio he's a very amusing man. The bedrooms were separated from the rest of the house and therefore quiet, a twin upstairs with it's own bathroom with walk in shower and jacuzzi bath was very comfortable and the downstairs double with an en-suite bathroom was also comfortable when our friends joined us later in the week. We will definitely consider a return visit.

The owners were very welcoming, friendly and approachable.Kitchen well kitted out with utensils etc. It was kind of 'home from home'. Good to have a supply of leaflets about the area as it was totally new to us. Especially helpful was the information sheet listing the various churches with contact numbers so we could contact someone to find out if it was the kind of Church we would enjoy.(and we succeeded!) It was a quiet place in the country so there weren't any local amenities but it was just right for us. Lots of castles to visit and the boat trip to the Farne Islands was brilliant. Only one negative - the wireless reception was very weak except in the entrance hall but this was adequate for our 19 yr old son's usage.

The owners of the cottage live in the adjacent part of the house, they could not have been more helpful or friendly. It was great having them so near to make suggestions and help at any time. There was plenty of space in the cottage with 2 reception rooms and 2 bathrooms. The kitchen was exceptionally well equipped. There were also 2 TVs and masses of books, jigsaw puzzles and videos.

Very quirky but cosy cottage. Plentiful supply of books, videos games etc for rainy day. The owners were very friendly. Only one small complaint (as a non-pet owner) was the smell of animals inside the property. If pets are allowed in the cottage then perhaps a little more thorough cleaning is required.

I was looking for a last minute break to somewhere near alnwick and found this. Although the owners were away, their arrangements with the neighbours for welcoming and looking after us worked great. The house is very comfortable and warm, good amenities and a great location for getting out and about in Northumberland. For our toddler, the mainline railway 50 yards from the house was a highlight - he loved watching the trains. If you aren't used to the noise of trains going past, you might not enjoy it. The beach at Beadnell is only 3 miles away. Buckets and spades were provided! You need a car to make the most of this location - quite remote. Overall, this was a great place for a break.
