Lovely, clean and comfortable cottage.. Perfect position for exploring the area.
Osborne, August 2020
August 2020
The cottage was more spacious than we expected.. The kitchen with the whole width glass window which opens up wide in the middle was a great benefit in Covid-19 times - we could open it and entertain family members living nearby while allowing in plenty of air. It also offers an excellent view over the fields. Although there is a hostel on the farm, the cottage is quite private and secluded from it. Parking is secure and easy. Mrs Lawes is a friendly and helpful host, but respectful of occupants' privacy. The cottage had been stripped of many contents on account of the Pandemic, so internal decoration was minimal and kitchen utensils, cutlery, etc. just enough for the number of possible occupants (four), but Mrs Lawes said that we could ask for things put in storage if we needed more. Heddon is a convenient base for exploring Northumberland (the A1 is only about 10 minutes easy drive away) - unless you are walking the wall you will probably need transport, but there are reasonable bus services to Newcastle, Hexham and Carlisle. Although our stay was in summer, the central heating is effective (needed sometimes even in August) and there is wood-burning stove. We would certainly stay there again.

Fabulous cottage, the photographs don’t do it justice.. Great location. The owners added some lovely touches to make out family Christmas gathering special, including putting a decorated Christmas Tree up for our arrival. We will definitely be visiting again.

In our opinion the property was even better than it looked on your website.. We were a party of four and I don't think we could have stayed in a better cottage. It was very warm and comfortable and our hostess was perfect. She was always available to help if we needed to ask something, but never obtrusive, and even came to my rescue with some de-icer for the car when we were setting off to go home. If anyone is looking for a cottage for four to explore the area look no further just book it, you won't be disappointed. 15 out of 10 wonderful stay. Thank you.

Beautiful interesting property located within a farm.. Friendly jovial owner who was also helpful. Only one minor criticism, and it may not be of relevance to other guests, a grab handle in the family bath would be useful. All other aspects made this a truly memorable holiday. So much to see and do within the area. Well recommended.

It was a nice holiday although we rented a car to go certain places but we couldn't go because half of our holiday was snowy and we are not experienced to drive in snow but overall it was good..

The cottage is in a superb location in the heart of the countryside, yet only a 15 minute drive to the centre of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.. Heddon-on-the-Wall was perfect for us: the village being only a 10 minute walk from Houghton North Farm. We used the shop at the Shell garage, the two pubs (delicious meals at The Swan) and the Dingle Dell Deli/Tea Room for a tasty breakfast one morning. The accommodation was extremely comfortable, spacious and well equipped giving us more than we needed for our stay.

A clean, comfortable, quiet, typical cottage on a farm. The owners were discrete and very kind. The sofas were large and the beds were good. The kitchen furniture and tools were particularly complete for cooking.

June 2014
The cottage was so stylish yet comfortable. Every need was catered for. The owner was so very helpful. The situation was ideal for touring by car, but well placed also, being on the bus route and within walking distance of shops. We found the cottage such a great place to relax in and can highly recommend it. This is the 19th year we four friends have holidayed together and the joint opinion was Houghton North Farm Cottage was the best yet.

June 2014
We enjoyed everything from start to finish. The cottage was very comfortable and clean and the owners were friendly and we were made to feel very welcome. They were very informative about the area, where to go and what to do. The cottage is in a good position to explore the surrounding attractions and is the best one we have stayed in in the last six years. Thank you.

September 2013
The location was ideal, easy access to the main road and about 10 minutes from A1, which meant there were many places to visit within a relatively short drive (Beamish, Durham, Alnwick, Morpeth etc). Nice views from the cottage. Comfortable beds. The log burning stove was a lovely feature, and made the lounge very cosy in the evenings. The owner was very friendly and helpful.

July 2013
We stayed at Houghton North Farm Cottage while we were visiting my parents and family. We wanted somewhere we could hold a first birthday party for our son, so we needed somewhere with enough space. The cottage was very well apointed, and looked like it had been decorated/renovated quite recently. The huge sliding door in the kitchen (more of a moveable glass wall really!) was impressive, and both bathrooms were beautifully finished. We were impressed by the lovely solid wood furniture in the cottage, which seemed to be of a high standard. We had enough space to accomodate about 15 family members for the birthday party. The cottage is on a working farm, and the owners were friendly and pleasant when we arrived. Once we were booked in, they pretty much left us alone to get on with it, which suited us perfectly. The location suited us perfectly - close enough to Newcastle to be convenient for visiting family, but far enough out to feel more peaceful. It would be a nice base from which to visit places in the Tyne valley and along Hadrian's Wall. The only slight negative I can think of is a lack of outdoor space. There's a small concrete "yard" just outside the kitchen, but no grass area or garden. It wasn't a problem for us at all, but some people may miss having somewhere nicer to sit outdoors.

Excellent facilities, and very comfortable. Convenient both for Newcastle, and for Hadrian's Wall. The only one (slight) problem was access - a difficult turn in and out onto a fast road. Mirrors needed? We would certainly stay there again.

March 2013
A wonderfull location to stay for a vacation in one of the best counties in England. My family and myself felt so relaxed during our stay in this well provided cottage. We stayed for one week in September 2012 and again in January 2013.The owners are so helpful and Paula makes sure that you enjoy your stay.Being a working farm, you must be perpared to see the odd animal giving you the "nosey" look.Kitchen was very well stocked if you wish to do your own cooking, but with the fine local public houses this was not an option.Strongly recommend.

January 2013
Perfect for connections to Newcastle, Metro Centre and lovely local towns such as Hexham. It is such a lovely cottage. The owner and family really make you welcome. She even found the time to show me the cows they look after, after telling her they are my pet of all animals. This is my second stay in less than six months and hope to stay there again in March if it is not booked. A wonderful village to stay in. I would strongly recommend it. Thank you Sykes for making bookings so simple.
Mrs Charlton
January 2013
Loved the fact it was a working farm. Owners were very helpful and couldn't do enough for us. Nothing was a bother to them. Great explanations about the parking, animals, the boiler, the fire and recycling. All the things we usually worry about. Very generous with supplies in the kitchen and toilet rolls.
Mrs Dyball

Close enough to home as it was a girlie trip away, but very rural with lovely views. We would highly recommend The Swan Pub in the village. Everything was perfect.

February 2012
The facilities at the cottage were excellent, and very comfortable. The owners gave an excellent standard of customer service. It was only a short drive to the local Sainsbury's and post office, and Hadrian's Wall was really close as was the centre of Newcastle. It was fantastic!
