Self-Catering Reviews

August 2021
Hiraeth was a really fantastic place to stay. We loved the incredible open setting and the wonderful views across the countryside, exploring the endless paths around Hiraeth, the table tennis and sitting around the large table in the kitchen with family and friends. We will definitely return!

Our second visit to this gem, and it was better than the first time. The barn is full of character and charm, and the location is amazing. You can let your children roam safely and get close to wildlife. We saw hares run past the front door, and swifts nesting above the bedroom window. I had to work for a couple of days and had a great signal with Vodafone, so the lack of wifi was not an issue.

Such a feel good place I wrote a song about it! Our 3 boys loved exploring, games provided, and the table tennis. Easy trips to Elan Valley and Water Break it’s neck, walking and cycling over the byway was fantastic. We would definitely stay at Hiraeth again.

This spacious and eco-friendly barn conversion is in a stunning location with great walks straight from the door.. No wifi or phone signal makes this a real get away from it all destination. We would strongly recommend holidaying here. Great views in all directions. A really peaceful place.

Our cottage was lovely, big and lots of space.. Loved the log burner for each night even though it wasn't needed as the heating is amazing so even in the snow we were never cold. If your looking for an amazing view high up and lots of space for a family to explore then this is the place. Will return in the future.

The cottage was lovely spacious and had great heating system however the property was not clean there was spider webs round the ceiling and the floors had to be mopped and vacuumed.. It could be due to the heavy snow the property owner was unable to prep the cottage in time. Also the house needed a biger fridge freezer and some other essential items.

We booked this cottage to stay in with friends and our 5 children (who are all under 5) it was even more beautiful than the brochure.. Spacious, child friendly and surrounded by amazing views. The cottage is incredibly well equipped and delightfully warm. Only note is that there is no Wi-Fi and I have accidentally run up and extremely large phone bill as my phone constantly searched for access. Might be worth an advisory note to stop others making the same error!

A great location for a family get-together with members coming from Wirral, London and North Wales.. We met with the owner with whom we appear to have a great deal in common.

The homely feel to Hiraeth is fantastic and there is the added bonus of the 'sports barn' too. We have been there twice and have recommended it to many friends. The remote location enables you to disconnect from the world. Excellent property!

This was a fantastic property and a weekend was just not long enough. The cottage was a very high standard with great workmanship throughout. It is in a lovely location with fantastic views. Plenty of lovely walks from the cottage and others only a short drive away. The owners were very helpful. We would really like to return to this cottage again in the future.

June 2015
We had a lovely stay here and enjoyed every minute of - the house itself is really comfortable and spacious. The wild flowers, birds, woodlands and pretty walks were wonderful. The view from the house is stunning; rolling hills and fields. We had small children with us who all loved the nearby stream, walks in the woods and space to run about in- a completely natural adventure playground! We'd definitely recommend a stay here to anyone wanting to enjoy some peace in the wilds in a really comfortable house with everything you might need...

The scenery and peacefulness was great. Fabulous walks and no light pollution. We plan to visit again some time next year, but for a week next time. The piano and the table tennis were a big hit with all of us. We didn't feel the need to use the television.

The property looks fantastic, has a real homely feel and lots of space, very peaceful which allowed us to really unwind. Very well equipped. The property was lovely and warm and on the couple of nights where the temperature dropped the log burner warmed the house up a treat. It's a great example of a barn conversion.

The stay was fantastic! The ambience of Hiraeth due to its location, decor, design and layout made it a wonderful experience. The outdoor games area was a welcome distraction and the nearby activities, walks and bike routes were all enjoyed too! I couldn't recommend this place enough and after using many Sykes cottages, I would without doubt consider coming back to Hiraeth.

September 2013
Lovely barn conversion, terrific views, superb location.
July 2013
The location of the cottage is perfect, high up a small track/road, which meant great views of the surrounding countryside. The area is great for walking, Monty our greyhound loved it (especially spying a rabbit - obviously dogs arent allowed off lead). Down the road is a place called fishpools which is also great for walking. The house is stunning, roomy and cosy with everything you could need in the kitchen. There are views from each room, even the bathrooms! A nice touch was the photo albums showing each stage of it being built. The table tennis was also a lot of fun!
Mrs Cook
June 2013
Very nice, countryside location. Lovely big house with everything we needed to make our stay relaxed and fun. I really liked that we could take our dog, as this was our main holiday requirement.
Mr Shelton
December 2012
Wonderful location, beautiful walks straight from the front door, appreciated by people and puppy alike! Secluded enough to feel like a real get-away-from-it-all spot, but close enough to all kinds of amenities. A comfortable, cosy house that felt like home ten minutes after walking through the front door!
December 2012
There was a real attention to detail in the cleanliness and preparation of the rental. It made 'moving in' so easy. The log burner and comfortable beds made the environment one in which to instantly relax being able to watch superb skies pass by Wonderful cycling and walking. Access to interesting places and Hay on Wye was fantastic for pottering and bookshops. The kitchen at Hiraeth made cooking a pleasure - there are places to eat round and about but you do need to drive to them. Staying in was no hardship Beautiful and characterful properly, wonderfully presented and plenty of space for boots, wet kit and outdoor clothing. Superb walking straight out of the back door and up on to the hills.
Mrs Phillipson
November 2012
This cottage was finished to a very high standard. This place was a great getaway holiday from all the hussle and bustle of our busy life. It was a large place that fitted 7 adults easily. We spent a lovely week celebrating our daughters 18th Birthday. It has a wonderful large kitchen/diner which holds a massive Oak table which we had good old fashion family meals. First class cottage. We will be definitely be booking for next year

Hiraeth was a beautiful, peaceful holiday home in a stunning location. To come back to this property after miles of walking and exploring was a delight. I actually looked forward to cooking in the lovely (well equipped) kitchen. Even the dog did not want to leave. Can not wait to go back. Hopefully really soon!

November 2011
We absolutely loved this cottage, the setting is fabulous, it was in a more elevated position than expected and has great views. Lovely to be able to go for walks from the doorstep and come back to a cosy and comfortable cottage. We welcomed the games cupboard full of board games and puzzles that our 5 year old thought rather special and the table tennis in the open fronted garage

June 2011
The house was absolutely fantastic - easily the best I've stayed in in the area. The location was supreme - felt totally isolated with a spectacular view. The house itself was extremely spacious and well furnished with some unique touches that made it a holiday to remember - the piano, the table tennis, the massive kitchen with a beautiful oak table, the sumptuous master bedroom, the views from the balcony. The price was great for what we got.
