This was our second visit to Hill Farm and frankly I don't understand what the previous reviewer was on about. Yes it's a working sheep farm but there's barely any noise. Most days you can hear a pin drop. As for narrow roads, what a surprise in a farming county! The facilities and cleanliness were excellent as was the attention given by Ian, Kathryn and Adrian. There are numerous footpaths around, one of them opposite the entrance driveway. The nearest supermarket if you need one is at Belmont by Hereford with others in town but the shop at Locke's garage just beyond Wormbridge is large and very good with excellent staff. At the time of our visit it was easily the cheapest fuel too (Shell). I can thoroughly recommend staying here as we hope to again.
1. Property is Very Nice Indeed.
2. Owner is extremely helpful, and pleasant.
3. The Property is 50 yards away from a working Farm with Tractors, trailers etc working from 7.30am, the photographs don't show this on the website!...
4. It's NOT Private at the front or rear of the property as there is a Grass track which is used by the farmer.
5. at 5.15am DAILY 5 Dogs Bark constantly for 20-30 mins waiting to be fed
6. Twice a week people turn up at 7.00am to tend to their horses...banging about car doors and calling their horses from the field.
7. Roads to the property are DANGEROUS...They are just about as wide as your car, and the hedge rows are 15-18FEET HIGH so you can't see round any corners...I nearly had a head-on Collision with a Stupid Delivery Driver...and you need to drive to 5mph to be as safe as you can.
7. If you meet any other tractors or cars on the TINY roads you may need to reverse down the 10ft wide road for 2-300 yards....IMPOSSIBLE.
8. ALL road are the same leading the the area of the property ..and the road leading the the property itself is EVEN NARROWER, and scratches your car !
9. PROPERTY IS CLEAN, all on one level, and very well maintained, and has quality fittings.
Cottage very comfortable & well equipped particularly impressed with very sharp kitchen knives, usually take my own as invariably they are pretty blunt in most rented properties.. Owner very helpful always around if any problems.
Mrs Simister, September 2020
Firstly the pictures of Hill farm cottage on the website are outdated therefore does not do the property full justice so please bear that in mind .. We had a warm welcome from the charming owners on arrival who showed us around the property .Hill Farm was clean, very well equipped , and extremely comfortable. We had views of the fields and the livestock through large patio doors in the lounge, which has retained some original beams but with a contemporary twist. It has a Large kitchen with lots of appliances, overlooking a well maintained patio with seating, and the whole property has a light spacious feel. Its about 3 miles off the main road into Hereford, so there is peace and quiet in abundance. Would certainly stay again .
Ms Thomas, September 2020
Really lovely spacious cottage in a beautiful location.. The kids enjoyed watching the comings and goings of the sheep and horses and we enjoyed the view and comfortable beds and sofas. The kitchen was really well kitted out and having a washing machine and tumble drier on hand was useful given the weather!
Mrs Hallchurch, August 2020
Cottage was perfect, just as described.. More spacious than photos tend to show. Clean and comfortable. Quiet and peaceful. Farmers are friendly, as are dogs and cats! Lovely big sitting out private area, watching the sheep and cows in adjacent field with distant views of Garway Hill. One minor suggestion would be for a larger fridge, but not a real problem.
Mrs Fenner, July 2020
The owners were lovely, couldn't have asked for more, wish I was still isolated .... The owners were lovely, couldn't have asked for more, wish I was still isolated there in this time of lockdown and covid-19
Mr Connell, March 2020
The warm welcome from the owners and the local information they gave us
Plenty of space, easy parking, nice and quiet and very warm.. Lovely to sit in the evening and see all the nesting birds flying past the barn.
Beautiful location on a working farm.. Friendly owner who left us cake on our arrival. Ideal accommodation with comfy beds. Only suitable for 4 adults now as no longer has a bed settee in the lounge, this was the only negative point. Thank you
Wonderful cottage, very warm and cosy, well equipped, beautiful views.. More than enough space for four. Welcoming owners, friendly animal hosts! Like a home from home for us.
Near to some excellent local places to eat, some really good local food makers and markets, and very near several local cider producers, and in the middle of some of the best countryside
Hill farm cottage was idyllic and set perfectly in the countryside.. No noise or light light pollution added to our experience.
A small drive away from numerous towns also added to this being the ideal base.
If you're looking for somewhere to relax and enjoy the views of the gorgeous English countryside, Hill Farm Cottage is an excellent choice!
Lovely peaceful location.. Everything we expected and more. Very helpful and friendly owners. Would definitely like to return sometime in the future.
This cottage was very spacious and extremely well equipped with a very nice welcome from the owner.. The only downside was that this area is not walker friendly with footpaths difficult to access, poorly marked, if at all, overgrown or through livestock.
We have just come back from a weeks holiday and had a lovely time the cottage has everything you need to enjoy yourselves.. The owner was very helpful if we needed anything. Very relaxing holiday.
There were gorgeous views, and it was very quiet and tranquil! The description needs updating as there is no longer a bed settee and the sofas have been updated, otherwise everything was as expected and we enjoyed our stay!
Very restful and relaxing.. Beautiful setting
The only problem we had was the photograph of the cottage did not portray the actual location correctly.. ..ie we booked thinking that the cottage grounds would be secure for our small dog to be let outside , but the cottage was in a farm yard environment and there was nowhere to walk with our dog, the fencing shown in the photo was not part of the cottage grounds but taken from within part of the farm which was out of bounds to to anyone renting the cottage . There was nowhere at all to walk from the farm so it was fortunate that we had our car.
Wonderful place, very friendly people, made to feel at home.. Would recommend to anyone.
The best ever place we have stayed at, would recommend to every one..
Lovely spacious cottage with open beams in the main living room.. Wonderful views out of almost every window. Peaceful and quiet. A perfect place to get away from it all. We loved it
We loved Hill Farm Cottage.. Excellent location with far reaching views and ideally placed for walking, great for the Black mountains and book shop rummaging in Hay on Wye. The cottage was really warm, comfortable, much bigger than expected and well equipped. The owners were amazing and let our 2 boys feed the lambs and sheep every day. They absolutely loved going out in their pajamas to bottle feed the 2 new lambs and collect an egg! We loved it so much we stayed an extra day and we will definitely go back again.
The upside ; lovely hot water and lots of it, central heating very efficient, with glorious views all round, comfy beds with good bedding.. Downside ; the whole cottage needed a thorough clean. To begin with, the entrance needed a good brush to get rid of leaves and cobwebs which were all over the door frame and the tiles, this was a shame as a pleasant entrance would have made quite a difference.
When we arrived we had to vacuum the lounge carpet as it obviously had not been cleaned from the last visitors. Then brushing down the walls to get rid of masses of cobwebs, these were also on the curtains, curtain poles and every nook and cranny. The cobwebs on the beams were amazing and we managed to remove quite a few. The hearth was then swept and the glass on the log burner cleaned so we could see the fire ! On looking behind the books on the window sills, we found thick cobwebs, dead flies and numerous spider corpses. The fabric covered settee was dirty and on lifting the seat cushions found food bits, dog hairs and sweet papers. We then cleaned the glass of the patio doors as they were covered in dog slobber, as was the glass on the back door.
Now we get to the kitchen ! One revolting oven and baking pans that were disgusting and should have been thrown out months ago. The crockery was a mishmash of sorts and much of it was chipped. The glasses were pristine.
The bathroom was fine, except for the shower hose which again was revolting.....black mould ? it was quite off putting.
I have taken photographs of all the things mentioned and can send if you desire.
It was such a shame about the lack of cleanliness, I know it is out in the country and they accept dogs , but that amount of cobwebs dead flies, spiders and dog hairs was not acceptable.
It did not spoil our holiday , but it would have been absolutely A1 had these things been addressed in the first place.
We were, to say the least , disappointed.
Just spent one week at this delightful place with our daughter and son-in-law. Very peaceful, quiet beautiful surroundings. The Cottage is extremely spacious, very well equipped and very comfortable. Would definitely go back again. Booked by my daughter.
Just returned from a week's holiday at hill farm. This barn conversion is a very well equipped spacious property set in the heart of Herefordshire with amazing views over the countryside. The area is quiet and peaceful, but only a car drive away from local attractions and places to eat. The owners are very warm and welcoming. You cannot help but feel very well rested. We are already planning our next visit!
Light and Audrey.. The sheep and chickens were a bonus. Would definitely book again.
Just returned from a week's stay at Hill Farm Cottage. The accommodation is good and value excellent. It's situated in a beautiful part of the county and even so-so weather won't spoil your stay. We intend returning.
The cottage was a great find and we had a lovely time. It was lovely and quiet which was just what we needed after wedding planning! This was a great place for our honeymoon, and our four-month-old baby's first holiday. We will be booking to go back again in the future. The owners were lovely.
The Cottage was so comfortable and felt like home very quickly. The views were absolutely amazing, and it was a great central location from which to visit many places.
The location was fab and the cottage was excellent, but best of all was the lovely warm welcome we received on arriving, all the help with jack our dog when he fell ill and lots of information about places to go and see. Just a wonderful time made better by the owners.
This must be our 4th or 5th holiday at Hill Farm Cottage. It is such a lovely area, whether you just want to relax looking over the fields watching the lambs playing and the 3 chickens wondering by the window. Every time, we find somewhere different to go and explore. The owner is always on hand and just such a lovely person to chat with when she has time. We are back again in September, cant wait!
In an ideal location for exploring Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds. The property has great facilities and we were able to relax in the quiet surroundings.
It is a beautiful cottage, located near the main farm building, but far enough away to be private.
It is so peaceful with the most beautiful views.
The owner is very friendly and really nice.
It is also a lovely area located witching driving distance to Hereford and Abergavenny.
My husband I always know that Hill Farm Cottage will give us a restful and relaxing week, our dog Dando likes his runs around the fields, and comes back to watch the 3 chickens wander past the window! The owner is so welcoming and friendly every time we visit. What more can we say except looking forward to the next time! Thank you for the welcome pack and Dandos treats!
Sat Nav brought us straight to the door. The owner was extremely helpful, but unobtrusive - loved the fresh eggs! We mentioned mountain biking and the next day we were given the details of a brilliant provider. We loved the absolute peace and quiet and the Cottage had everything we needed.
An excellent property in a very peaceful location. Beautiful views, was nice to sit and watch the animals. Owners were helpful and unobtrusive. Property was well equipped and very spacious, highly recommended.
This holiday is our third, the property Hill Farm Cottage is fantastic; very relaxing, lots to see and visit in the area. My husband and I like to unwind at this cottage with our dog, so much so that we will return in September, can't wait!
Lovely cottage in great position on farm with beautiful views.
A beautiful well equipped cottage in beautiful settings, the owner was lovely and just left you to it. The farm animals were a delight to watch. Ten minutes drive to quaint village Ewyas Harold, with a well stocked shop, post office and 2 pubs with the friendliest of folk. We had a meal in The Temple Bar Inn - delicious! Would definitely recommend. We certainly will be returning.
We liked the location and the general peace and quiet of the surrounding countryside. The owners were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. Overall a lovely holiday. Will be thinking of returning in the future.
The accommodation was ideal for a relaxing peaceful holiday, and central for exploring local amenities either side of the English/Welsh border. I have already highly recommended the property to family and friends, and intend to return in the near future.
Both my husband and I thought Hill Farm Cottage was so relaxing, it was so lovely to sit out the back overlooking the fields, and watching all the birds. The owner of the property was so friendly, and it was a pleasure to stay there. We have already decided to go back next year!
A very large cottage in a stunning location. Great room sizes and everything was there you could ever need. Very pleased with this cottage and will be revisiting again.
A very comfortable and well-equipped holiday cottage, with an unusually spacious sitting room. The surrounding area is very pretty, and there are plenty of castles and other attractions within an hour's drive.
We had a wonderful peaceful holiday. Friendy owners of the farm and the animals made it a delight. Would recommend to anyone who likes walking, lovely scenery or just a restful time.
Herefordshire is a lovely part of the country. Had a very relaxing holiday. Adored the lambs on the farm, especially the Hereford Ryelands. The owner made us very welcome.
The owners were very friendly and welcoming, in spite of being very busy with lambing which was fascinating to observe. The cottage was very warm and comfortable and in a glorious spot. Abbey Dore is very interesting and the cottage is very well placed between Hereford and abergavenny. There was nothing to fault with the cottage and the mixed weather meant that we really appreciated the cosy but spacious cottage.
Peace and quiet in the middle of nowhere! Beautiful scenery.
Despite snow and icy conditions, the cottage was warm and welcoming. The location was perfect and had lovely open views.
This is a truly lovely place to stay - stunning views, blissful peace and quiet, a comfortable cottage and a very genuine and warm welcome from the cottage's kind and thoughtful owners. The cottage faces across the fields and it's fun to watch the antics of the goats and the coming and goings of the sheep right outside the windows. The owners are happy for guests to wander around the farm at will. Lambing time would be a fascinating time to visit I think. Very easy to get to Hereford. Lovely cathedral and a nice farmers market on a Saturday. Equally easy to get the Black Mountains. Don't hesitate to stay here during the winter time. We stayed during the snow in January and were beautifully warm and cosy. This is a very restful place with a really nice vibe about it. We have stayed in self-catering cottages for many, many years, there's not many we've been tempted to return to but this would be one of them!
Hill Farm Cottage gave us: a genuinely warm welcome from kind and thoughtful owners; a lovely farm to wander around at will (walk behind the barns to see the stunning view down into the Dore Valley); the antics of pigmy goats, chickens and sheep to giggle over and blissful peace and quite.
The cottage is very comfortable and bigger than it looks on the photographs. We have family in Hereford and the owners kindly allowed us to invite them to the cottage for the day. 11 of us (from 6 weeks old to 91 years old) spent a lovely Sunday with plenty of room to sit, eat and gossip.
Always a bit concerned booking cottages in the winter in case they're cold and draughty but absolutely no need to have worried. We were at Hill Farm Cottage during the heavy snow fall in January and we couldn't have been warmer or more comfortable.
There's a really nice "vibe" to this cottage and the farm and one of the few cottages we've stayed in that we would be more than happy to return to.
Friendly greeting on arrival. Perfectly peaceful location and a very nice spacious and spotlessly clean cottage. The views were absolutely awe inspiring, to be surrounded by sheep, goats and chickens made it so relaxing but also close by were so many places to explore and eat at. The owner also left a greeting pack of essentials to start our holiday, I don't think anyone could ask for more.
Stayed here at the end of November 2012, with my wife and our spaniel, we had a wonderful time and I would certainly recommend it - in fact we plan to return in the Spring.
The property is very spacious, with a very large hallway that is all tiled - this proved very useful as we were here when all the news was of flooding across the country - and everywhere was incredibly muddy and wet. So we had plenty of space to dry our gear, and it was easy to sweep up any mud that found its way indoors. (certainly cannot blame the weather on the venue).
The property is nice and warm, the only slight downside was that the property smelt a bit of oil, the owner said this was due to a recent service of the boiler - so hopefully that situation will be resolved when we return.
The bathroom is good - with an excellent power shower which was great for when we returned from walks feeling a bit wet and miserable.
The lounge is really great - with excellent views and as said by other reviewers - I don't think the pictures do the property justice. The sofas are little bit tired and could probably benefit from some refurbishment - or at least some throws.
The wood burner is a nice feature - but will only work if the wind is in the prevailing direction - be careful if it shifts - as happened one day to us - when the burner does not draw properly and the whole cottage flooded with smoke (with the alarm going off etc... bit of a nightmare). In fact if you open up the door and hold your hand up to the flue you can feel the draft of cold air coming down the flue - no way in a million years will it draw properly in that situation. However this only happened on one of the days we were there - and the rest of the time it was fantastic to chill out in the lounge with the burner blazing away.
The countryside around and about is fantastic and on the couple of nice days we had - we were really able to enjoy some fabulous walks - the rest of the time it was a bit grim in terms of the weather for us, but we saw enough to make us want to come back and see the area in more favorable circumstances.
There are some great pubs around and about, but you will need a car as even the nearest is a bit of a trek.
All in all it is a great place, well situated at the top of the hill - with great views. The owners are nice and friendly and helpful. Enjoy!
The cottage was very comfortable with stunning views across open fields. An ideal place to relax and unwind in front of the wood burning stove with a glass of local cider!
We had a wonderful holiday at Hill Farm! The accommodation was excellent and we were made to feel really welcome. The panoramic views were spectacular.
This is a holiday cottage not to be missed- we will be recommending it to our friends.
Mrs De Longa
Peace and tranquillity. Enjoyed being close to farm animals and watching sheep dog training. Well situated for visiting many places.
The peaceful location and in a good area within easy reach of walking areas and shopping. Very enjoyable and of course the weather was superb.
It was a wonderful cottage with very good facilities, very light and peaceful.
I stayed there for two weeks at the beginning of November, 2011 and it was such a peaceful and relaxing place to be! Oh, I miss it so much. The long walks along the country lanes, sitting on the back patio and writing...and being introduced to Welsh cakes by the nice woman who owns the place! When I first got there I noticed right away that the pictures on the Sykes Cottages website don't do the place justice. Also, when she was showing me around inside I was struck at how big it is! Very nicely decorated inside and my god how do I describe the view from the living room glass doors? Amazing!!
I absolutely loved the peace and quiet of the area surrounding the cottage, I had never experienced that before. Also, the walks I took were amazing, such a beautiful area.
Beautiful countryside and friendly hosts. Our dogs were allowed to run free in the fields where there were no sheep. The cottage is very spacious and well furnished. Great shower. Wood-burning stove very good too. First class accommodation.
Great views from several windows.
Fantastic location with great views - quiet and peaceful. Friendly hosts and a lovely farm. Great for the kids and perfect for walking cycling.
A warm welcome and very spacious accommodation. Good location and very peaceful countryside made it easy to relax. We will almost certainly be re-booking for next year.
Total peace and quiet. In a very secluded area overlooking fields and with lots of nice walks. Owners very nice, leaving a lovely welcome tray for our arrival. Cottage had lovely big hall way (tiled floor)- a good area for wet dogs/boots etc. Lovely views from most windows. Big rooms, ideal for wheelchairs if necessary.
Hill Farm Cottage was immaculately presented and perfectly situated for our holiday. I truly struggle to see how it could possibly be improved upon actually.
The only thing I can think of is that it would benefit from a clock and a full-length mirror, but really these are trifles as the cottage had everything we needed, and more besides, to make our stay truely lovely.
The owner was really nice and was helpful and approachable at all times, and added to the wonderful atmosphere of the property. It was so nice that she put some locally-produced treats, as well as essentials such as milk, tea and bread in the kitchen for us ready for our arrival. Such lovely thoughtfulness really makes the experience of staying at Hill Farm Cottage stand out!
I had a lovely relaxing holiday in the bungalow. Everything was just right. Being on a working sheep farm added to the ambiance of the country side.
The owners were very friendly and the property couldn't have been nicer. The surrounding countryside was spectacular and there were lots of interesting places to visit. We arrived just after lambing had finished and were entertained many evenings by the lambs antics. The fields were also dog friendly. We enjoyed the patio as it was a private sun-trap.
The cottage was excellent, very clean and in a beautiful location. The owners were really friendly, my wife enjoyed visiting the lambs as they born, and our dog Rosie loved running in all the fields. We had a great holiday and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a quiet holiday. The surrounding countryside in the Wye valley was excellant and great dog walking country
The bungalow was everything it said. The location was wonderful,so relaxing and quiet. The bungalow was furnished to a very high standard, everything needed was there. The host was most helpful.
The evenings spent in front of the log burner were fabulous.
The garden and the field were greatly appreciated by us both and the dog!
Friendly welcome, great house, the garden and the field were ideal for the dog. The evenings spent on the sofa in front of a log fire were fabulous. I came home the most relaxed ever from any holiday.
We had a really great New Year in Hill Farm Cottage. The location is idyllic (for those who like peace and quiet). The property was incredibly spacious and the owners couldn't have been more welcoming whilst giving us all the space we needed! What more could you ask for - we will definitely be back!
fantastic accomodation and excellent location for easy access to the wye valley, Hereford, and the welsh borders we crammed so much into the weekend and it was great to be able to take the dog too we walked for miles! We were visiting family and friends who all came to us for a bbq as we had everything we needed. It was great being away from the telly lots of great board games provided. We have recommended to family and friends and will return
Amazing location with incredible views. Excellent owner, helpful and considerate.
Overall just a superb experience.
Property was very nice and particularly suitable for young children as there are no stairs and it is situated down a drive so there is no traffic.
We had a fantastic weekend! Great location for visiting Ross, Hereford, Welsh Borders. Great place, fantastic views and lovely helpful owner, who directed us to fantastic butcher for great family and friends bbq! Thanks. Kids and dog walked for miles around the field. Will return!
