This was our third visit to Elwood House, we love the area, the village has everything we need including a lovely pub with excellent food. The house itself is super comfortable and feels like a home from home. It’s great for dogs, the garden is lovely and has plenty of parking. The owner is really helpful and quick to respond. I’m sure we will return again!

The perfect location and place to stay for your time in the Lake District. We absolutely love staying at Ellwood house. It has everything you could need and is super spacious for a family of 5. Can’t wait to stay again

We've stayed at Ellwood House many times over the years and love returning. The owners are very approachable and have worked hard to upgrade the accommodation over the years. The dogs absolutely love it too and have not managed to escape (which is unusual as one is an escapologist). Away from the hurly-burly of the main tourist areas, but still close enough to visit them if we want. One week is never quite long enough!

Wonderful second stay at Ellwood House, Caldbeck and already booked for next year. Lovely cosy cottage with everything you need, big garden and secure gated drive, ideal for our black lab Gracie. Big bedrooms and lounge, home from home. We explored Caldbeck and did all the local walks aswell as Keswick, Grasmere, Ambleside, bowness, Silloth by the coast and lots of the lakes. Ellwood is a quiet base to stay local or go further a field, could not recommend it more.

We have had the most fantastic week in this beautiful cottage. The cottage was immaculate, well equipped plus the garden was so pretty and also secure for our visiting four legged friend. We were blessed with glorious sunshine every single day. We had many adventures walking, wild swimming and kayaking in the Derwentwater and Grasmere areas. Caldbeck itself was a lovely village and we had two good meals at The Odd Fellows Arms and used the local farm for milk and other produce. Would highly recommend.

I couldn’t recommend this little gem enough, it had everything you need and more. Fabulous cottage, very comfortable beds, cosy living room with log burner. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need. Beautiful Gardens, beautiful village, lots of walks on your doorstep. Would definitely recommend this cottage and can’t wait to return.

We booked a last minute long weekend away. The house was beautiful, perfectly located (would definitely recommend the local pub!) The house had everything we needed - welcome package was a bonus. Beds super comfy, lovely decorated. The garden was beautiful and enclosed enclosed the dogs. Communication with the owner was super. Will definitely be returning

A very comfortable and spacious cottage located in Caldbeck at the northern edge of the Lake District. All the northern fells behind Blencathra and Skiddaw are within easy reach. Keswick is a 30 minute drive away. The village has a shop and a pub which serves good food. The cottage is well equipped and has 3 bedrooms, but only one bathroom, which might be an issue for a large family. There is ample storage for bikes in the garage which would be great for cyclists.

Ellwood House is comfortable, well-equipped and maintained, done to a high standard throughout and has a lot of charm. The owner is friendly and helpful and keen to give value for money. Caldbeck is quieter than most areas of the Lake District with good walking on the doorstep and easy access to Keswick, Penrith, Carlisle and beyond (It's less than half an hour from the M6). The pub in Hesket Newmarket is a gem if you like that sort of pub. We do. We've now been three times in less than a year and a half and I'm sure we'll be back.

This is a lovely cottage in a beautiful part of the lakes. The cottage is spacious and well equipped for a holiday. Everything you need is at the cottage and the garden was safe and secure for our dog. Handy little shop and an amazing very dog friendly pub. If you are thinking of visiting the lakes I would definitely recommend stay at Ellwood House.

Great cottage in lovely village on a quiet road. Five mins walk to well equipped local shop and the Oddfellows Arms a dog friendly pub serving good food. The cottage was nicely furnished and the beds comfortable. Skirting boards and kitchen cupboards could do with a wipe down but other than that the property was clean and looked recently refreshed. I would recommend this dog friendly property to friends and would book again. The owner Stuart responded promptly to emails and was pleasant to deal with. Caldbeck is off the tourist route so the area nice and quiet but is within easy reach of several towns.

Ellwood House certainly did not disappoint. We had a wonderful weeks stay. The cottage is warm and welcoming and has all you need for a comfortable holiday. A lovely welcome basket of goodies and essentials including some milk from Midtown Milkhouse on arrival - a proper treat. You can cook up a storm in the well equipped kitchen and enjoy eating in, around the beautiful dining table. No dishes to wash as there is a dishwasher to take the strain! If eating out is more your thing, then the Oddfellows Arms in the village is less than 10 minutes on foot serving good food, and there are plenty of other locations to eat out at. We booked a table to eat in the train carriage at Bassenthwaite Lake Station. Just over 20 minutes by car and well worth it. We did plenty of walking as we were blessed with dry weather, some straight on foot from Ellwood House and others by taking a trip in the car first. We recommend the short car trip to Fellside to then walk towards to old disused mineworks. If you end up on the muddy side then don’t worry as there is a washing machine back at the house to deal with that. Returning back to the cottage after a day out and about was so relaxing. Get the log burner lit, maybe a soak in the bath the ease the muscles, enjoy a glass of wine reading a book on the comfy sofas. There is good size TV and a selection of DVDs, but also great wifi, so we took our Firestick and streamed some things to watch. A very comfortable bed, good linen and a generous size bedroom meant seven nights of good sleeping. Plenty of wardrobe space for storage too. Great secure garden (an essential for us as we have a pooch) which would be lovely to sit out in during the summer and there is a large garden table and chairs and also a bbq for those people lucky enough to be holidaying in the warmer months. Lots of parking space in the properties own gated area at the rear. There is a shop in the village and well as the Milkhouse & the pub. The locals we met were very friendly and welcoming. The owners of the cottage were very helpful responding to our communications and we look forward to our next trip to Caldbeck & returning to Ellwood House, as we wouldn’t choose anywhere else to stay in when there is everything you need here and more.

Our first stay here with our Black Lab Gracie. Such a lovely spacious but cosy Spotless house with all you need in a quiet village, great gated parking and secure back garden. Ideal base for touring the lakes, 13 Miles from Keswick, but not far from anywhere in the National Park. We went to Silloth on the coast too, which was so nice and green. Caldbeck Village is quiet and scenic with lovely walks on the Cumbrian Way, a Duck pond, nice Pub, cafe, well stocked shop and the Midtown Milkhouse, where you buy a bottle and fill it with milk yourself or make a Shake ! Wigton is nearest place for big shop, we went to Lidl (11 miles). Would definietly stay here again. Not much traffic goes past the cottage, so dont worry about the road outside, this is on a side street in the village past the School House, the occasional sheep passed by !! You get a lovely welcome pack on arrival too.

Returned to a cottage we love in gorgeous Caldbeck. Cosy, immaculate accommodation and everything you need to have a very comfortable stay, including a pretty garden to sit in and plenty of parking. A very short stroll into the village where you find a pub, local shop, great gift shop and coffee stops plus local walks. A perfect location to enjoy the northern lakes, fells and towns. We’ll be back.

I have visited Ellwood House before and again I wasn’t disappointed. Very clean warm and cosy with of course Log Burner. Lovely local walks and I highly recommend The Muddy Duck Cafe for before or after your walk. The village pub is great and for variety I have also found another hidden Gem The Old Crown in nearby Hesketh Newmarket. Wonderful real ales. Ellwood House is highly recommended I’ll be back again.

Top Marks for everything. Cleanliness, comfort and facilities. Furnishings were very tasteful and accommodating. Lovely private garden for my dog. Cottage well situated in a quiet location. Due to our age the village was a step too far to walk but wouldn't be a problem for younger people and people more mobile than we were. Stuart was very helpful and always available when needed. Only slight hitch was hi tech kettle, but then we are a pair of wrinkles, or recycled teenagers. Says it all. Would certainly recommend eating at the Oddfellows Pub in the village. Good food and friendly service. Would certainly stay here again.11/10.

We had a wonderful few days in this super holiday cottage. Really well equipped and tastefully decorated. Cosy and warm in the evenings. Lovely little sun trap of a garden in mornings and early afternoon, and after the sun goes down there’s an excellent firepit to keep warm. The garden is really secure for dogs too. Very near the centre of Caldbeck where there is a well supplied small shop, village pond and quirky milkshake “bar”. The pub only reopened on our last evening but did excellent pizzas. Beautiful local walks including bowscale tarn, the howk, Causey pike. Tennis courts in the school grounds very close to the cottage can be hired too and are very good value.

Just spent our second Christmas at Ellwood and we had a lovely, relaxing time. The cottage is warm and cosy, well equipped, comfy and dog friendly. Great location for exploring the north, less touristy, lakes. Caldbeck is a pretty village with a good pub and small shop for the essentials. The dairy has set up a milk vending machine in the centre of the village with a milkshake station.....genius idea....the kids loved it!! We will definitely be back!!!

This wonderful cottage is just what everyone who is looking for a peaceful dog friendly holiday home needs. The garden is perfect for your fur babies and a beautiful place to sit out. The attached barn/garage is an absolute god sent for wet coats and mucky boots leaving the house free of clutter and mess. The house itself if extremely well equipped and a lot bigger than it looks on the photos. Quirky and warm with a great log burner. Ideally located a very short walk into the village for the shop, pub, cafe and small craft shops. We absolutely loved our stay and because of the garden for the dogs we will definitely be booking again. All in all one of the best holiday cottages we have rented for our needs.

Ellwood House is situated in a beautiful village surrounded by stunning views. It has a pretty cottage garden which is safe for dogs and a pleasure to sit out in. The cottage itself has everything you could need and is very comfortable. The walks in the surrounding area are interesting and scenic. A fantastic cottage to relax at and to explore the lakes.

This is our 3 or 4th time at Ellwood and we had a lovely time again. The cottage is well equipped, clean and spacious. As owners of two dogs the safety of them is of great importance to us. The rear garden is perfect and the lovely weather allowed us to enjoy it to the full on return from our walks. Hope to be back again very soon.

We stayed in this cottage with my boyfriend at the beginning of December and we loved it. We enjoyed having Christmas decorations and sitting by the fire every evenings. It is very easy to start walks from the cottage as it is in the middle of the country side. The town of Caldbeck has all necessary to spend a few relaxing days in the mountain. There are pubs with local amazing food, grocery shops with local products, cafe/tea shops and a cute little shop with handcraft items. We could enjoy the landscapes and sunrise, we even saw the wild ponies that live near the cottage! Coming from Spain, this was a unique experience and highly recommend to everyone who loves the countryside and nature

Ellwood House is situated in the beautiful Lake District village of Caldbeck. The village sits in a valley surrounded by rolling hills and bubbling rivers and seems to have survived the less attractive attempts at new building development.. The village retains its rural charm and old-world mystique. It also boasts a wealth of village amenities like a pub, a church, a village shop and hairdressers. The Old Crown at Hesket New Market, a couple of miles away, is well worth a visit as it has its own brewery and gives you a flavour for local life. The house has everything that you need and all the appliances are in good condition. The living space is very comfortable and tastefully decorated with a mixture of old and new and plenty of books if you have forgotten to bring one. The beds are very comfortable and there is plenty of cupboard space to store things away, We had a wonderful stay. Thank you for your hospitality.

Really enjoyed our stay here, the cottage itself is very charming and also we’ll equipped. The location itself is ideal, there is a local pub in the village that serves good food and good beer and also a cafe, tearoom, post office and general store. Only 15 min drive to wigton where there is a decent sized supermarket and a number of shops. 25 min drive to penrith and is in easy access of most of the lakes being between 15-60 min drive away. Would definitely recommend and will also allow dogs. Thankyou

The main issue we had was actually before the holiday.. I had a conversation with one of the company representatives regarding travel insurance. I would like to state that it was my mistake selecting travel insurance when initially booking our holiday. But I was sure I did not ask for insurance, due to the fact we already have annual insurance. Because of personal reasons, I did not check the holiday confirmation which included the travel insurance. As soon as I realised the mistake, I contacted Lakes Cottage Holidays and the representative was adamant there was nothing she could do. I was not happy with the situation, but it seemed we were stuck with the travel insurance. I even asked if there was anything she could do as a gesture of good will, but she was polite and firm when stating the company response was final and if I was unhappy the only course of action was the FCA. The insurance situation could have been sorted amicably, but Lakes Cottage Holidays stuck firmly to their terms and conditions. The insurance premium was forty pounds. This is a small amount of money compared with the total holiday cost of around £800. We will not use this lettings agent in the future and any recommendation is out of the question.

Your literature stated that towels were not supplied, in bold letters! I packed an extra bag full of towels and tea towels, only to find towels on each bed and tea towels in kitchen. A bit annoying so could you please change your details.

Stayed over May bank holiday with our dog. Wonderful fenced in garden with a table for 6 outside to enjoy al fresco dining as the garden gets the sun until early evening. Ample parking at the back of the property, easily fit 3 cars. The house was clean & spacious with a lovely log burning stove (logs provided). Kitchen, which is about to be upgraded, had dishwasher, microwave, electric stove, toaster and plenty of crockery. Location is great, quiet yet with easy access to the village and fells. Would definitely return and recommend if travelling with pets.

We recently spent a week in Ellwood House and had a thoroughly lovely stay. The house was clean, tidy and very homely with the beautiful log burner. We were amazed at how well stocked the kitchen was including cleaning products, tea, coffee, milk and some rather delicious biscuits. All this and plenty of fuel for the log burner. We will most certainly be visiting the property again as it's location was perfect for our family with plenty of parking, beautiful enclosed (great for the dog) garden with patio and BBQ. I have never met such friendly people as the people in the pub and village shop which may I add has everything you could possibly need. The proprietors of Ellwood House were amazing, we managed to leave something behind but they returned it to us in a very timely manner. They couldn't do enough for us. Wonderful, can't wait to do it again when the weather picks up.

Just returned from a one week stay at Elwood House. The cottage is situated on a quiet country road. We were a little concerned when we read another review which said that there was traffic noise throughout the night which wakened them. We didn't experience any noise during the night - in fact it was birdsong we wakened to every morning! The cottage is well appointed with everything you would need for a self catering stay - wifi worked brilliantly and laundry facilities also great. As others have mentioned, the kitchen is a little dated, but is perfectly adequate. 4 out of the 5 beds were slept in and were all comfortable. The back garden is lovely and a little sun trap, we enjoyed a bbq while our kids played safely in the gated driveway. The garden is well enclosed and safe for dogs too. A lovely cottage in a fab village - we'll be back.

The location of Caldbeck is a beautiful quaint village with a few little shops, local pub and tea room. There are plenty of walks locally without having to drive but, a visit to Aira Force is highly recommended and if possible, the walk up Gowbarrow Fell. The actual house is spacious and very clean but the kitchen is tired however, saying that, it had most things that we needed. Do note, the house is on a main road and vehicles and tractors pass literally right past your window. This meant we were woken a few times (11pm a tractor passing and it returned at 0300 in the early hours). If you live in a quiet location then this is probably not the place for you as it is loud when vehicles pass. We left a day early due to tiredness simply because of the noise but also the mattresses (see below). A few points ..., it would have been nice to have a coffee on arrival. We found the coffee was rock hard and stuck to the bottom of the coffee jar. We were only given 1 toilet roll and ran out (not good). The hoover isn't too good as the attachment did not fit and we had to get on crouch down to hand hoover the carpet. The single beds are in a terrible state, I had to sleep in one of them one night was husband snoring. The springs are jutting through all of the single beds in the house so I had to use a bench seat cushion that I found in the cupboard to lay on the bed. If I had children then I would not be happy about them sleeping on these mattresses - they need replacing. If you do stay then you literally need to take everything you need with you (towels, cooking oil, condiments, toilet roll etc). It is a lovely house and has a good size garden that you can let your dogs out.

April 2015
We booked this accomodation for the Easter week as it was the only accomodation we could find available to suit our needs for 3 bedrooms and 2 dogs so were a little nervous. We needn't have been - it turned out to be perfect for us. 3 good sized bedrooms (1 double and 2 twins), a sitting room/dining area more than adequate in size to comfortably sit 5 of us and the 2 dogs - and beautifully appointed. We didnt need to light the wood burner as we were blessed with great weather. The bathroom is also modern with a good power shower. The only thing needing a bit of a spruce up is the kitchen but having said that it was still clean and had everything you need (just needs modernising a little) - would also benefit from a bigger fridge/freezer. The washing machine/drier is located in the adjoining barn where there are also bikes (no hellmets though), fishing nets etc - all a useful addition. All in all the propert is great, we even had a BBQ in the back garden which wa snice to sit in after a day of walking and exploring the surrounding area. The village of Caldbeck is lovely with plenty of walks to discover along the river and countryside. As you head down the hill to the village, take a left before you reach the village (towards the duckpond) and you'll see a signpost for a walk to Howk. This is a great little walk (only about half a mile) where you will discover an abandoned Bobbin Mill and spectacular waterfalls - our son (9) loved exploring along here and enjoyed getting his feet in the water. You can then cross a bridge over the waterfall and up steps into a farmers field - cross this and you end up more or less back at the cottage. On an evening we enjoyed the boardgames provided in the dresser and just chilling out with a bit of tv. You are probably between 30mins to an hour drive away from the main tourist spots of Keswick, Cockermouth etc which are worth a trip to and we'd recommend just parking up along the way when you see a spare parking spot alongside the Lakes. Try Grange, do the Borrowdale drive and take in the spectacular views/driving experinece of the Honiston Pass (not a drive for the faint hearted). Our SatNav got us more or less to the front door - just take the next left around the back of the property for a great dedicated parking area.

My girlfriend and I stayed in the property for 3 nights at the end of November 2014 and we had a wonderful time away. The cottage was a great size both inside an out, with plenty of private parking to the rear. Internally the cottage was very well appointed with everything that we needed for the weekend. The cottage was also very clean and tidy on arrival. The village of Caldbeck was very nice and quiet - the cottage is in a quiet spot too with very little traffic going along the road in front. It is located quite far from the lakes but it was a lovely drive down to them, and there is plenty of walks/cycle routes around the cottage to enjoy. Overall a fantastic stay and we would definitely recommend to friends and family alike.

It is well kept, well equipped and lovely cottage. My family and I had a very comfortable stay.Loved how spacious the place was and the back garden was breathtaking. Maybe a distance to the nearest tourist attraction but worth the drive if you are particular of good/pretty interior in your holiday rental home.

A well presented and clean cottage with great facilities that included wood for the fire, Wifi, lots of local info, a new BBQ & a cracking pub 4min walk away from the front door (The Oddfellows Arms) The location is close enough for some really good walking but not too close to the madness that can be Windermere! Highly recommend & we hope the we will return for another cracking week soon.

Loved the cottage. Wish we could pick it up and take it home. It was spotlessly clean and fresh when we arrived and even though it is a pet-friendly property you'd never know there had been any animals in it. The layout was great, it was well furnished and the kitchen had just about everything we could need. With a wood burning stove in the living room it would be perfect for romantic getaways. There were even spare light bulbs and batteries provided should you need them. The cottage was in what we thought was a quiet little side street but later turned out to be quite a busy one, but it didn't affect us much as we were out most of the day. While we were staying there was a building site at the rear which we thought would be noisy and disturbing but wasn't, and the workmen were very accommodating when asked to move their vehicles for access. All in all we had a very enjoyable week and would recommend Ellwood House to anyone who loves the area and would like to bring their pet.

Enjoyed our stay at Ellwood House and found it very well equipped and comfortable. The log burner was great. Bags of space for everyone and everything. Great walk up High Pike and Carrock Fell. We really appreciated the remoteness of the Northern Fells. Caldbeck is a lovely village with the Oddfellows pub in the centre serving some really good food, although the service could have been quicker. The Priests Mill is well worth a visit for coffee and home made cakes. Most definitely come again.’

A few friends and I stayed here while on a mountain biking and walking holiday. The house was spotless, the beds were comfortable, and the bathroom felt brand new! The kitchen was very well equipped and the lounge was perfect for relaxing in the evening. Sadly the weather was not good enough to sit outside, but the garden would be great for a BBQ with lovely views. The location was ideal for walking and exploring, and there was a nice pub restaurant and convenience store more or less on the doorstep. Can't recommend it enough!

We had a lovely stay, the cottage could do with updating in terms of the cutlery and the drawer its kept in (loose handles and hard to open, generally a bit wonky)but new isn't necessarily better! comments of previous guests. Good clean bedding which is always a plus. Maybe the cleaning lady isn't paid enough, as the windows were grimy and I found sweet wrappers behind furniture when I vacuumed the lounge. I don't mind a bit of work even on holiday, its a change from my normal job! I even cleaned the glass in the lounge door. On a serious note, the cottage offered good accommodation and the barn/utility was a god send. Nice garden and dishwasher a godsend. Area was great and the village itself was charming, with some interesting features for us old fogey's 46 and 56. But still with more go than most in their 30's (Tongue in check)

This cottage was in a fantastic location, a lovely family cottage, large garden and particularly enjoyed the private parking. Nice touch - owner contacted us during the week to see if everything was ok Overall had a fantastic time in this cottage and will hopefully go again

The cottage is beautifully kept and in a perfect spot for walking and cycling. Caldbeck village is delightful with much to see and do if the weather is wet and an excellent real ale pub in the next village of Heskett Newmarket. We look forward to returning and climbing some hills in the near future.

The cottage was very spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed a weeks stay in late May when the weather was excellent. Tried the local pub a couple of times and the food was very good.

Nice facilities and cottage but unfortunately this spoilt by the fact that there was a strong smell of damp that pervaded everything. The smell was very strong throughout the stay and then all clothes etc had to be washed on return, even those which had just been in cupboards, as the smell clung to everything. We all wanted to come home and have a really good shower and get rid of the smell. A real shame as everything else was very good.
