cababness
October 2011
The cottage was very well serviced, very neat, clean and comfortable. The owners provided items for kitchen/bathroom cleaning/washing up-even dishwasher tablets, condiments, and liquid soap.Plenty of logs for the fire (though we didn't need them this week!) and plenty of CDs, DVDs, books and games. Also a lot of local information and booklets provided.
The only downside at the property was the double bed was a little big for the room, and you just had to be careful not to bang your knees on it. Also the bedrooms had window shutters, not curtains, but this wasn't too much of a problem.
The village was very pretty and served by 2 good pubs-The Miners Arms is a good real ale pub, serves good pub fayre and is a good place to chat with the locals. Ye Olde Gate is a lovely 'olde worlde' type pub complete with real fires, and tankards hanging from its beams. The food here could compete with any high class restaurant and the chef even offered to cook whatever our vegetarian friend liked (which you don't find happens often).
The cottage is not far from many pretty villages- Ashbourne is great on market day and has lovely individual shops and plenty of places to eat. Carsington Water is close by and is a lovely place to walk and has a lovely restaurant overlooking the reserve. There are also a few shops there. Dovedale is beautiful -great for short and easy or more strenuous walks. We also visited Kedlestone Hall and Calke Abbey- both interesting and about 3/4 hr away. At Calke you can even have a picnic at the side of the Deer reserve. It also has a lovely garden with organised tours-well worth it.
We had a lovely week. The cottage made a lovely comfortable base from which to explore the surrounding area. Would happily recommend it.
