First visit to the Lakes.....not the last. Beautiful well equipped cottage set in stunning scenery. Well off the beaten track, which is just what the doctor ordered. Log burner was an added bonus. Stunning view from the breakfast table. Perfect retreat.

The cottage is so cosy and to be 'snowed in' would be a blessing. We were spoiled for exhilarating walks and climbs. It wasn.t far to Scarfel Pike - the path was lovely. It was perfect and we are looking forward to going again soon. The view of Hard Knott pass was interesting, as we watched cars go up and down on the ice! The Beck is beautiful and very calming to listen to and we loved watching the Herdwick sheep right outside the windows, as well as a Barn owl. We drove 12 miles one evening to the Black Cock in Broughton and enjoyed a really good meal. Totally amazing

Having had our holiday abroad cancelled due to Covid, we were looking for somewhere to holiday in the UK.. Our favourite place is the Lake District, so we were feeling extra lucky to find that Cockley Beck Cottage was available in August. This cottage is situated between the Wrynose and Hardknott Passes. WOW our journey brought us over the Wrynose Pass which is dramatic and spectacular (especially when the sun is shining). The Hardknott is just as amazing to ride too. We were warmly welcomed by the owner, and the cottage was just as we had expected. It was big enough for us (a couple and our four legged friend). There is a comfortable living area with a wood burner, dining table and an open kitchen area with everything you need, including a washer and dishwasher. The bathroom has a shower over the bath, and an heated towel rail. The bedroom has a bed, wardrobe and dressing table in, and is comfortable. At the rear of the cottage is a lovely long secure garden which our dog loved. There is also a table and 2 chairs (which we sometimes used to sit out and have breakfast or dinner). The owners are friendly, helpful and on the day before our departure we asked to buy some of their free range eggs, which were freshly picked for us. We would highly recommend this lovely cottage, and would not hesitate in booking it again.

Excellent location to stay away from the crowds as not many venture over Hardknott or Wrynose pass, making it great when you just want peace and quiet and spectacular views.. The cottage is perfect for 2 and a dog. Very clean and well equipped. Make sure you get your shopping delivered or take everything with you as access to any shops is difficult. There is walking from the door and the roads are quiet. Recommend this accommodation if you are happy to drive on narrow roads (single carriageway for a large degree) for 11 miles to get there. The closest pub is at Seathwaite (5 miles), but not open until 1st September.

We had the most amazing honeymoon at the Cockley Beck cottage.. We were looking for something remote with not many people around to enjoy some quiet family time with our two four-legged babies. We found a little gem and it was exactly what we needed! The cottage is located in the most beautiful valley with a wonderful stream just on the other side of the road. Views from the windows are breathtaking and there's plenty of picturesque walks nearby. We were surprised to find everything provided in the cottage, from cleaning products to dog poo bags! It was a lovely touch. We recommend reading some of the other reviews prior to your stay as they're full of very useful tips regarding getting to the cottage and the area. It really helped us prepare better for the holidays. We will definitely be returning!

As previous reviewers have highlighted, if this is your first trip to Cockley Beck it may be advisable to take the A595 as your first route inbound, the Wrynose Pass is not for the more inexperienced driver.. .. The cottage itself is fantastic. All modern amenities are available, the kitchen is well equipped, and the living area is clean and well set out with the addition of a wood-burning stove. The bedroom is cozy (the bed was comfy & warm) with plenty of storage, and the bathroom is, well, a bathroom (and yes the shower does work and is perfectly fine - just watch yourself when setting the water temperature, the hot water is extremely hot). At the back is a parking area with a large garden which is fenced in to keep your dog(s) from wandering and mithering any of the local sheep. Did I mention that the cottage is a little remote though? Well it is, so be prepared... The cottage basically sits at the intersection between the Wrynose Pass, and the Hardknott Pass. The nearest pub, the Newfield Inn is approx. 4 miles from the cottage (a nice stroll itself) and serves good food and ale. If walking is your game (it is mine), then the walks from the front door are great, just keep your dog on a lead and shut the gates behind you! All the fells are close by, including my favourite Harrison Stickle, and Ambleside / Coniston are not far away at all. Wonderful, quiet cottage, with great hosts - would I recommend? A definite yes

Only that if your not aware of the Wrynose and Hardknott Passes and how remote they are, it could be a tricky drive for some folk..

Great cottage in a fantastic spot.. Has everything you need and friendly, helpful hosts. Extremely quiet with beautiful walks from the door. Don't be put off by the bed comment, a new mattress was delivered while we were there. The shower is fine too - not a power shower but does the job. We are already planning a return visit next May.

Lovely cottage.. Perfect location . Only negative comment is the bed. Mattress really uncomfortable.

May 2018
Perfect location for walks.. we and our two dogs stayed here for 7 nights and I feel like we could have stayed for at least another 7 at least and even then we couldn't have discovered all the gems of the Lake District. It's set at the most perfect location for any walks. It's literally 5 min walk from hardknot pass and about an hour walk from the Roman ruins on the other side of the pass. Coniston and Ambleside is around 30-45 min drive if you want to stock up on food you better off ordering online on asdas or tescos website as they do food deliveries. The cottage is very clean and fully equipped; washing machine dishwasher separate fridge and freezer kettle, toaster etc. The house is squeaky clean and very cosy. Perfect for a couples getaway. There's a fire burner in the front room, I do recommend putting the fire on, we visited mid May and the evenings do get rather chilly without the fire on. We lit the fire each afternoon, it gives the coziest, loveliest atmosphere to the whole little cottage. The owner, Sandra is the real gem of the Lake District. She is warm, welcoming and always there if needed. We purchased additional firewood (which is only a fiver btw) and Sandra was back in a heartbeat with more wood. She can look after the dogs if you'd like to visit the mines or if you'd like to go somewhere without them.. The area is perfect for ramblers and for dogs. Mind you sheep are everywhere so do keep your dog(s) on leash if they tend to chase for everyone's peace of mind. All in all a lovely charming little cottage with great walks just outside the window. Well worth a visit. We will be coming back. Thank you for the lovely hospitality, Paul and Anna. x

This is a lovely cottage in a very remote location.. The owners are keen to stress this as it is several miles along a winding single-track road with passing places and several hills the most delightful countryside to the nearest shop. If you are looking to get away from the modern world then this is ideal...there is no phone signal or internet throughout most of the valley. It is also worth noting that from the cottage the road divides, one going over the Hardknott Pass and the other over Wrynose Pass...both exhilerating drives and not to be attempted in bad weather. Set your satnav to find Broughton-in-Furness first, then Cockley Beck as the final destination. However, please DO NOT be put off by these comments...the cottage's location is extremely beautiful and is an ideal base for exploring arguably the most wonderful valley and fells in the Lake District. The location, and absence of a lake makes it quieter than the shores of nearby Coniston or Windermere for example, and is particularly good for rambling. Plan your visit accordingly, bring all your provisions with you and unwind in front of the wood burner (logs supplied) with a glass or two of something that cheers!

A real gem of a cottage which is an absolutely perfect base for exploring Wainwright's Southern Fells.. The owner is very welcoming. The log burner makes the place cosy and relaxing in the evening. Free Range eggs and logs for the burner are available from the owner, both at reasonable prices.

Just the little bits of comfort such as maybe a nest of tables so you can put your tea on instead of the floor and maybe a couple of cushions on the sofa..

The views and walks from the door of this cottage are breathtaking. It nestles next to the River Duddon itself with the Hardknott and Wrynose Passes at the junction over the packhorse bridge. Idyllic setting with a landscape which changes its mood according to the weather. The accomodation is comfortable and adequate, the kitchen area in particular is very well-equipped...a second sofa or armchair would be a bonus in the sitting area. The walks direct from the door in every direction give the most incredible views, and plenty of exercise!

Sandra was a friendly and flexible host.. We found the empty spaces and glorious landscape exciting and recommend the nearby Newfield Inn food and drink. The cottage was comfortable enough and very well prepared. Be prepared for single track roads.

For lovers of fells and fell walking this is the place. We walked from the cottage to the summit of Scafell Pike. The cottage is spacious, fully equipped with everything you need and lovely and clean. A lovely wood burning stove to make the cottage cosy in the evening. The owners are friendly and helpful. There is a book written by a writer who stayed in the cottage. Cockley Beck: A Celebration Of Lakeland In Winter by John Pepper

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cockley Beck Cottage.. We booked it for its location being exactly where we wanted to walk. We found the shower pressure not to be of power shower standard but have no complaints. The owners were very welcoming.

Cockley beck cottage is located in the duddon valley at the foot of Hardknott pass & Wrynose pass. Beautiful remote location ideal if you are a keen walker/cyclist & you want to get away from it all. The cottage is well equipped & the log burner was a greatly appreciated addition. The only downside is the shower has poor water pressure but that is hardly the end of the world. Don't use sat nav to get there as it will take it over wrynose pass which is not for the faint hearted. Approaching from the A595 after Broughton-in -Furness take a right turn at the traffic lights signposted Seathwaite & follow this mainly single track road for 11 miles to reach the cottage. The owner lives in the farmhouse connected to the cottage & is always on hand if you have any concerns.

The Cottage was very cosy and extremely clean. It was in a great location. Being in the heart of Cumbria and being able to leave the car parked up for the week was a bonus and there was lots of walks from the cottage.

A lovely holiday for lots of walks and it was a peaceful area to relax in. The cottage is fantastic, the owners had thought of everything you would need whilst you are there. It is very clean and furnished to a high standard. The log burner is a lovely addition to the cottage. The garden is enclosed which was perfect for our two dogs and was big enough for them to have a good run around.

The cottage was comfortable and had all the necessary amenities. The views from the cottage were superb. It was excellent for long walks and peaceful surroundings. The owners were friendly and welcoming and welcoming of our dogs. The enclosed garden with its own parking was great as the dogs were safe to sit out in the garden.
