The popular market town of Barnard Castle is only five miles away and is home to the Bowes Museum in addition to its renowned castle and a wide range of shops and tea-rooms. The countryside surrounding Staindrop is excellent for walkers and cyclists, meaning that there is something for everybody in this fabulous region.

Region
From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

An absolutely amazing stay for the whole family.. Everything was above and beyond our expectations. We were met with a very friendly owner who gave us some very knowledgeable information about the area. It was clean and tidy and well equipped. We will definitely be booking again.

We were visiting family so we could look after our two little grandsons and wanted somewhere to take them rather than traipsing round museums etc and this turned out to be perfect.. Huge rooms for them to gallop around in and an outdoor play area as well. On our second day, they were absolutely rapt looking out of the window watching sheep being herded, horses wandering about and also farm vehicles. Toys were left out for them and the huge TV was a source of constant pleasure, needless to say! When they had been returned for the evening, we could relax on the two big sofas and the bed was big and comfy. The price was great, the owners friendly but not intrusive and all in all, it was lovely. The central heating was possibly the best and most efficient ever and the constant hot water also a big bonus. Just two little points, not niggles exactly, but in the interests of honest feedback - firstly, the kitchen floor needs a really good clean. It has ingrained dirt in front of the sink and cooker which is a bit off-putting, also there was a garlic skin under the table and as I am allergic, I know for sure it wasn't ours! I used to own a company doing holiday let cleans and I would not have passed this job of work. Other than the floor, though, everything was clean enough. The other thing is that when the adjoining unit is in use (as it was on our last night) smells of food come through the connecting door, as does a howling draught when their front door is open. A draught excluder would probably fix that and it didn't bother us, but I can see that some people might take exception. The cleverly designed units don't have adjoining bedrooms, so there was no disturbance after bedtime. But all in all, fabulous!

Generally we were happy with the property and found the owner to be most welcoming.. There were only one or two minor adjustments we would like to see, such as a screen for the over bath shower, and perhaps some more kitchen utensils. The "Big girls pop" was most appreciated. We hope to return sometime soon.

Lovely little cottage, in picturesque setting.. Couple who own the place were very friendly and helpful. We had a small issue late one night with a toilet and they were straight round to fix things. Little park was great and kept the children entertained, it also allowed them to make some new friends as there are 4 cottages in total sharing the little courtyard.

Butterwick was the perfect restful base from which to explore the beautiful countryside of County Durham and North Yorkshire, and the small village of Cleatlam and nearby Staindrop were also marvellous places to walk an energetic Spaniel!

Kitchen & kitchenware not clean nor was bath & kitchen was store for a large ping pong table which was odd IMO.. Be careful of temperature of hot water pipe at point that it meets on-off taps: extremely hot- it burns if accidentally touched

Wonderful properties which enabled us as a family to be all together for the first time for some years. Loved the area. The more active members made good use of the variety of waterfall walks and other activities. Friendly hosts. Introducing our grandchildren to the pony was much appreciated. Sauna and spa bath well used throughout (especially by the walkers)! Lovely facilities, lovely people, good pubs in the area, what more could anyone ask?

This is a lovely spacious barn, light and relaxed- great for a family group. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and with friendly owners next door. Could have done with a good clean and some maintainance but overall very good. The dog living on the other side of the road is a bit fierce and doesn't like other dogs.

We particularly liked the fact that we were able to open up the 2 adjacent properties, Butterwick and Millstone, into each other and have a huge house for 8 adults and 2 young children. Our grand-daughter loved the farm and was able to feed chickens and lambs and ride a pony. The small childrens play area outside was a great success, as were the numerous toys for all ages inside the house. Adults appreciated the jacuzzi bath and sauna and found the cooking and dining facilities brilliant for large family meals. Overall a brilliant holiday.

It was much nicer than the pictures suggested! Owners appear to have furnished with 'quality' rather than flimsy furniture. Lovely quiet village and owners very helpful and friendly.

Was a 4-star property - felt like it should have been 5-star! An excellent property - we stayed there before 4 years ago when it was brand new, and were impressed by the way it still felt like new 4 years later. It oozed quality. Owners living next door, very friendly and helpful.

Very welcoming family and village neighbours. Relaxed atmosphere. Bottle of wine, teabags etc great on arrival - little touches make all the difference. It makes a pleasant change to go to a holiday home where you are not paying to have fewer facilities then you do in your own home. This cottage was equipped to live in, rather than just exist in.
