What an amazing place to stay.. The photos don’t do it justice. There was 15 of us and every one was very impressed with everything. Very high standard Would highly recommend it. We had the chef and butler service one night too and that was exceptional

We were a wedding party of 17 and a dog.. The Lodge was perfect for our needs - warm, comfortable and in a beautiful location with amazing views from every window. The snooker room was a bonus. Athol braved wind, rain and even snow at the BBQ to provide us with a feast of cooked meats and a variety of salads. Nick was extremely helpful throughout. We are already planning a reunion at the same venue!

This holiday property was without doubt the best property we have stayed at, in over 30 years of having large family group holidays. Everything we needed was provided - and worked! Two top quality washing machines and dryers, a large fridge and chest freezer, an enormous electric kettle, two dishwashers, a wine chiller, plenty of crockery and cutlery, the list is endless! The beds were all comfortable, the showers (all en-suite) worked and provided hot water. We have never returned to a holiday property we may return to this one.

The accommodation was superbly comfortable. It was great to come back after a long walk, leave boots and damp gear in the boot room and, after tea and cake, sink into steaming baths. There seemed to be an endless supply of hot water. A highlight was our final meal, the chef and the butler gave us a superb evening. Not only was the food top class, but the meal incorporated surprises and treats, fun and good humour. We were bowled over by the friendliness of the team.

We liked the whole holiday; from the professional and friendly staff to the house and grounds. I cannot say enough about it. The house was warm, well stocked and we felt completely at home and relaxed. We loved it.

we stayed here in June this year on our annual family holiday. Our ages ranged from 4 months to 86 years and the house was more than we anticipated. Whilst we were here it was my husbands 60th birthday and we engaged the services of the chef and butler to cook and serve our meal which was absolutely out of this world. The food was amazing and the service was second to none. We really felt like lords and ladies for the week and would not hesitate to recommend the place to anyone looking to book somewhere truly 5 star and away from it all.

A fantastic spacious house, ideal for a large family gathering. The standard was top class. We hired the services of the chef and butler for one night to celebrate a 60th birthday and it was the highlight of the week.

Liked the location, the sheer luxury of the property, the outstanding Kitchen and the plentiful supply of hot water/heating. Also the professionalism and friendliness of the house manager. A well deserved Five Stars.

This property is wonderful. This was our second visit and if it was not such a long journey we would visit many more times. Having said that, I don't think this will be our last time at Burnhope Shooting Lodge. The owners are so friendly that it felt like seeing old friends again. The house is huge, cosy and so clean. Everyone there should be very proud. We have these group holidays every year and Burnhope has rather spoilt us for any where else!!

As a group of 9 couples we have stayed in over 20 large houses over a period of over 30 years, and this property is the best we have been to. Everything about the house is outstanding and it is in such a wonderful position to explore Weardale, the North Pennines Teesdale. The views are fantastic with birds, hares lots of sheep just outside your window. We'll be back!

We have just returned from a week's stay in Burnhope Shooting Lodge, and cannot recommend it enough. Our party of 18 adults has been arranging walking holidays throughout the UK over the last 28 years, and we all agreed that this was the best property we had ever stayed in. All the rooms are ensuite, and also all are really big. Usually one person draws the short straw and ends up in the box room, but in this case, each room was large, and all the bathrooms really clean. The living space was equally well appointed, with an enormous lounge where we could all sit comfortably, and a huge formal dining room which, again, meant that we could all sit to eat together in the evenings. The kitchen/breakfast room was the best equipped we have ever experienced, and there is also a 'utility' room with two washing machines and dryers, as well as two dishwashers. The boot room was really useful for us to all keep our walking boots and coats. Externally there is a separate snooker room with a bar, which we did enjoy on several evenings, and there is a barbecue on the patio (it was too windy for us to use this). The house overlooks the reservoir, and is nice and isolated. It is possible to have shopping delivered by the usual supermarkets, which is probably a good idea, as the nearest supermarket is quite a way off (about 40 mins drive). As a group we had not visited Co Durham before, and would definitely love to return, as it is a really beautiful, and peaceful, area.

Perfect if you want isolation and space for contemplation. Feels very safe, very big, well furnished and the open fires at this time of year made us really cosy. Thanks to our hosts. Highly recommended.

A beautiful house in a stunning location with plenty of room for a very big party (15). Lots of space both inside and out for active children. Superb kitchen with plenty of room to cook meals for this amount of people and a great dinning room to sit in and eat together. Overall an excellent find and we would definitely use this cottage again for a large group.

A stunning house set in a wonderful location. Despite the house being exceptionally large it has a very homely feel and our small party of eight all felt that the accommodation is home from home albeit on a grander scale !! The Housekeepers made us feel very welcome. The house and grounds are a credit to them and their team.

A stunning location and a fabulous property. This was a rare opportunity for the whole family to be together. There was plenty of space for 15 adults and 2 small children for the week. The ground floor bedroom was excellent for our 80 year old mother who could retreat for a rest when required. It could not have been better and all the family loved the ice machine!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Burnhope; it is an excellent venue for a family holiday and we were sorry to leave. It is so spacious it is easy to be together and yet there are places to be alone. We are a family of eldest 93 years youngest 8 years. Burnhope met all our needs.

August 2013
Wonderful house, every amenity, our group of 13 thought it was better than many 4 star hotels they had stayed in around the world. Very comfortable bedrooms, all en-suite. Huge kitchen and utility room, and beautiful lounge with large wood burning fireplace. We loved the location, but it is a drive to the nearest supermarket for supplies. We will definitely be returning to Burnhope Lodge and have recommended it to everyone we know.

The Lodge is beautifully appointed, well equipped with everything you need to hand. Nick and Angela were very helpful, attending to our every need. The Lodge is an ideal place for a celebration and, although quite remote, it is in a beautiful place with plenty of walking in the area. We had CCS Catering for a special meal and had a fabulous meal.

We booked Burnhope lodge for my Brothers 40th birthday celebration, we are a family of 12 adults and 6 children aging from 7-16. We travelled from Manchester which took just over 2 hours, the country roads are steep and hilly so driving with caution is a must!! Nestled in the stunning Durham countryside this beautiful lodge appears in the distance and could be the home of a rich game keeper or recluse celebrity. We arrived on the Friday afternoon to be met by the manager who provided us with a brief tour of the property with all essential information covered. After everyone frantically running around looking for our rooms we all settled in and unpacked. I did a tour of all the rooms and wasn’t surprised at what I found as I’d expected comfy beds, traditional decor and furniture and well equipped welcoming bathrooms, this is what I found. The master double was stunning with amazing views over the reservoir and countryside. In fact every room has a stunning view!! We had the ground floor room which is meant to be a disabled room. The twin beds in our room were extremely soft and bouncy which wasn't to my liking however was completely bearable once I’d got used to moving around. Our room also had double patio doors which opened up to a small private terrace and the side of the house. One thing that was clearly apparent was the cleanliness of every room facility, squeaky clean bathrooms, immaculate expensive bedding and pillows to suit. Most of the house is carpeted apart from the kitchen and door entrance area so we all made sure we took our shoes, the carpets in every room were spotless!!! As you enter the house there’s a large room with tiled heating floors which is fantastic for wet coats and general drying. We hired a hot tub as a treat for my brother so this room was perfect for our wet costumes and towels and directly at the front door. The kitchen was where we spent a lot of time, its welcoming decor and stunning traditional appliances make for a truly warming space. The kitchens were fully equipped with everything you could think of including stunning Wedgewood crockery which made for a fine dining experience. We placed an order with asda who delivered straight to the lodge on the Friday tea time as we’d pre planned our meals for the whole weekend which worked out excellent, would recommend you do this if you’re going in a large group. There’s large fridge space for food/drink etc and a full laundry room if you fancy washing your smalls!!...The living area was designed for large groups with plenty of seating that can be arranged at your leisure. We moved the seats in a big circle around the fire in the evenings which was lovely. The open fires really do make each room, the house also provides a large supply of wood so maintaining is easy. At meal times we used the large table in the kitchen which seating 18 of us around it. On the Saturday we used the formal dining room and decorated the table with candles and dined there for my brother’s birthday, a proper Downton abbey moment but with no servants?. We did venture out with a walk around the res and the hills, and then headed back to the lodge for a dip in the hot tub which seating up to 6 adults unless you’re a chunky family like mine which filled it with 4!!(This doesn’t come with the house we hired from a company in Durham who delivered and the house set up for us, we paid 170 for 3 days rental and an additional £50 to the house for the water and electric cost, well worth it!)... The local area doesn’t hold much in the way of things to do, we ventured into the local village just to shop, the nearest pub is about 30 miles away but with everything the house has to offer I don’t see why you’d need to venture out. The house also has a fantastic sound system which is playable in every room if required, a quirky modern aspect in this stunning country lodge. I would recommend Burn hope Lodge to anyone, my only piece of advice is that if you are taking children have activities and games planned as we did otherwise the house could become an assault course for bored children. I have very fond memories of my weekend here and this has defiantly given me and my family a taste for holidays in the stunning English countryside. Gareth Thomas. 18/04/2013
