Area
Located on the northern side of the isthmus joining the Rhins of Galloway to the mainland, Stranraer was founded in 1596 as a Burgh of Barony and elevated to Royal Burgh status in 1617. You can easily kill an hour or two browsing the shops and cafes, and the Stranraer Town Trail will fill you in on some of the city's rich history. The Southern Upland Way, a walking trail through the Galloway Hills, passes through Stranraer on its way west from Portpatrick. Castle Kennedy, Glenwhan, and Logan all have beautiful gardens that are open to the public not far away. Although there are a number of beaches in the Stranraer area, the best sand beaches are located at Sandhead and New England Bay. The southernmost point of Scotland, the Mull of Galloway, is easily accessible via a short drive south. A nature reserve protected by the RSPB has been established to protect this spectacular and diverse area along the Galloway coast, which can be seen from the lighthouse perched on the headland.

Region
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain’s best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.
