High Nelly Cottage, what can I tell you about it.. ..
We wanted a location central to the West and Dublin as we had trips planned with my Mother to visit family in and around Dublin and we also wanted to head out to Athlone to relocate our family home near Tubberclare. High Nelly in Clogh was the perfect spot with an easy drive to the nearest motorway in one direction and the town of AbbeyLeix in the other. Visit Papa Noni in AbbeyLeix for some nice home cooked Italian food in a simple, clean unpretentious restaurant.
All in all the cottage and its location were a delightful place to stay for the week. Something visitors should be aware of is that there are two ways to spell the villages name, Clogh and Clough and the road signs can be a combination of either. A bigger issue which gave us a fun talking point is that there is a second village around 20Km away with the exact same name also spelt both ways. There's also a little white cottage on the corner... So be careful if you rely on your SatNav and haven't read the directions provided... Schoolboy error but gave us some funny memories.
The cottage itself is deceivingly large, the pictures don't really do it justice. We were very pleased with almost everything with 2 exceptions. Whilst there was everything you could want in the kitchen a simple toaster would have been appreciated. The biggest thing though that all four of us agreed on was that we loved the rustic charm of the cottage but we all also agreed that the shower could do with been a little LESS rustic. If an extractor fan was installed, a proper shower tray and some sort of screen rather than rubber matting and a slightly mouldy shower curtain it would lift the whole ambience of the bathroom.
Sadly we didn't get time to visit the pub which is literally at the end of the garden but we did meet the landlord who was very friendly and chatty.
The advert does list WiFi in the facilities, it is a Pay As You Go device for which the owner asks for a minimum 20 euro payment by bank transfer if you use it.
All in all 9 out of 10 and we would happily stay there again if the bathroom was addressed.
