Holiday home
Halfpenny Cottage is a detached cottage set in the village of Harrowbarrow, three miles from Gunnislake in Cornwall. This cottage sleeps six people in three bedrooms, consisting of two doubles, one of which is on the ground floor and a ground floor twin, as well as two shower rooms. The cottage also has an open plan living area with kitchen, dining area and sitting area with electric fire. Outside there is off road parking for two cars, a shared, heated swimming pool with covered seating area and changing room, a lawned garden, woodland area and wildlife area. Halfpenny Cottage is an ideal base for a family who wish to explore the area, as well as relaxing in wonderful surroundings.

Gunnislake is a small rural village situated on the banks of the River Tamar, offering pubs and shops. The area is perfect for exploring Dartmoor, the south and north coast beaches and the attractions of Cornwall's far west. The town of Tavistock with its pannier market, pubs and restaurants is close by and there are many attractions nearby, including the fishing village of Calstock, the Donkey Sanctuary and the National Trust owned Cotehele House and Gardens.

Cornwall's visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.

This is an amazing holiday cottage, the pictures do not do the accommodation justice.. This is a pure home from home, there was nothing we wanted for and the home baked cake we arrived to was a lovely touch. The owners are on hand if you need them as they live next door, they are extremely friendly and approachable. This is by far the best holiday home we have stayed in since we began taking family holidays 17 years ago. The settings are peaceful and relaxing and it was a pleasure to spend a week here, I was actually sad to be going home. I assure you if you book this cottage you will not be disappointed. Thank you Alan & Verona for letting your beautiful holiday home to us.

We've just come back today from enjoying a week here and this is a superb property, the pictures don't do it justice.. The owners are lovely and helpful and the property has everything and more that you need for a self catering holiday. There is plenty to do in the area but be warned, the country lanes are VERY narrow (a local comedian calls the area narrowbarrow!). We had great weather whilst we were there and the pool was a God send. We'd only been there 2 days and booked for June next year. You definitely get what you pay for, you won't be disappointed.

On arrival at Halfpenny Cottage we were met with the owners who were just a delight, very warm and welcoming, we were made at home within minutes of stepping through the door. This is a 5 Star cottage with 5+ star owners who go above and beyond to welcome and help in any way if you do have an issue. Little touches like tea, coffee and sugar when you arrive, and soap on every sink unit add to the joy of being here. Oh and as a welcome, a fresh handmade cake was made for us which was delicious and very moreish. The accommodation is spacious and super clean, two bathrooms a godsend and a well equipped kitchen makes this a home from home. Space for two cars ... fantastic. The gardens to this property are beautiful and a joy to sit in, late evening all one can here is bird song. The view from the balcony is just beautiful. The property has an adjacent outdoor pool which guests have access to, and is private and secluded, and when the sun is out a real sun trap. A great place for a family holiday and a retreat from the rat race . Wifi is also included which was a real bonus especially for the teenage granddaughter. I cannot recommend this place enough its just beautiful and Harrowbarrow is far from the madding crowd, but within easy reach to everything you want. A great base for a Cornish adventure.

The cottage was beautifully presented and in excellent decorative order with quality fixtures and fittings used throughout the property.. The location too was ideal for visiting places in both Cornwall and Devon. There was also room for at least 2 cars probably even 3 on the driveway right next to the property. The property owners were helpful and friendly, and checked that everything was ok during our stay. I’d happily recommend this property to anyone looking stay on the Cornwall/Devon border.

Halfpenny Cottage far exceeded our expectations and is probably the nicest holiday cottage we have stayed at.. It had everything we needed and more - loved it.

Booking this holiday was very easy, Sykes kept in touch by email when money had to be paid and about the booking.. I really liked the Sykes App and how I could keep up to date with my booking and what the cottage facilities were. The couple who own Halfpenny Cottage were amazing we had the best holiday and would book though Sykes again in the future.

The cottage was in a very convenient position for visiting Cornwall and Devon .. We were a group of 6 friends and regularly meet up at cottages . The owners made us very welcome and there was a cake for our afternoon tea ! It was very well equipped and although we arrived with dishwashers tablets , washing up liquid etc there were plenty there as well - not always like this at other cottages . The swimming pool was an added advantage at this location , lovely to have a swim in the evenings . Some good pubs nearby for food when we didn't want to cook . I would thoroughly recommend this cottage . Thank you Mr & Mrs Davis .

This was a lovely, well-equipped, comfortable holiday home.. The location was peaceful and felt remote, but was well-connected to major routes, making it a fantastic base for exploring Devon and Cornwall. The owners were friendly and keen to help without being too intrusive. Overall, I would recommend Halfpenny Cottage unreservedly for anyone to holiday in. The pool makes it particularly attractive for families.

We really needed a holiday after my 12 year old was involved in a serious RTA in June.. The cottage was beautifully clean and in a quiet, pretty location. All three of my children (age 7, 11 and 12) love swimming so the pool was a must for us and did not fail to disappoint. In fact the pool and garden were so good we really didn't feel the need to go out. Alan and Verona were absolutely lovely and always on hand if we needed help or advice. We had one meal out at the Cross House Inn which was great and visited Burrator Reservoir and the Tamar Donkey Sanctuary during the week. This cottage far exceeded our expectations and we can report that it is also easily manageable if you have a child on crutches with a downstairs bathroom and bedroom - easier than being at home! We had a barbecue in the rain (Thank You Alan) which was great fun but other than that had fabulous weather. We've all come home feeling refreshed and would definitely book this cottage again.

Halfpenny Cottage is a wonderful place for couples and families alike. The accommodation is 5 Star and there was everything you needed. It's set in a peaceful location with beautiful scenery. The heated outdoor pool was excellent, with inflatables and toys to keep the children happy all day. There is plenty of garden space to just chill out or have a game of badminton etc. It's an easy commute to all the major tourist traps and there's plenty of informative literature in the cottage to help you decide. All in all this has to be one of the best cottages, an excellent place to stay whatever the weather. We were sad to leave, but will definitely be returning. You'd be mad not to book it!

A beautifully appointed property in a peaceful setting with lovely views. Being on the Devon/Cornwall border it is well placed to visit both counties. As we rented in the winter we were especially appreciative of the excellent central-heating.

This property is excellent, we cannot praise it highly enough. Best accommodation I have stayed in in the UK.
August 2014
The cottage was itself a wonderful part of the holiday. It had everything that you would require to enjoy your stay. From a heated pool to loads of outdoor space and indoor amenities to be proud of. The area was easy to commute to the main tourist areas, including Lands End, The Eden project, Dartmoor, Looe etc etc. There was a massive Tesco's within 10 minutes and if you didn't feel like cooking there were restaurants within walking distance. As well as great restaurants in Tavistock - 15 minute car journey. The owners Alan & Verona were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable but never got in the way like some owners do, their tips and suggestions were great. Would love to return anytime. It was a wonderful break.

The cottage was fully equipped; there was full use of outdoor pool and inflatables, there was outdoor seating and dining areas along with a gas barbecue. The locality was quiet and relaxing and led to an enjoyable family holiday.

We have just returned from Halfpenny Cottage. Being 5 adults and an 11 month grandson the cottage had everything we needed and much more. It is set in lovely surroundings with beautiful views from the cottage, where you can sit outside on the large veranda if you like. The amenities are tip top with the owners (Alan & Verona) kindly providing us little extras that you just don't expect i.e dishwashing & washing machine tablets. You are made to feel very welcome and on arrival we were greeted by the owners and a homemade cake had been left in for us, which is really thoughtful especially when you have been travelling a good few hours. The cottage has a lovely garden and a lower garden through a gate where you can play badminton or just sit in the summer house. We used the swimming pool which is solar heated and there are pool inflatables if you want to use them. It is lovely to have a swim or a splash around with the children on a hot day. There is a gas barby down by the pool area and in the garden a table with chairs to sit out alfresco. The area is ideal for both Cornwall and Devon, we visited Looe (approx 30 mins drive) and Bude (approx 45 mins) both lovely beach areas with some nice touristy shops. We also went to Cotehele the national trust property which is worth a visit. We had a lovely week and would recommend Halfpenny Cottage to stay, we would be more than happy to return and if we win the lottery ~ watch out Alan & Verona we are coming to offer you BIG BUCKS to sell to us. I think the only reason there aren't more reviews on tripadvisor for Halfpenny is because secretly we don't want everyone to know about it!!

It is a beautiful cottage with friendly owners who went over and above to ensure our stay was a happy one.

Beautiful cottage in a lovely area, easily accessible for both Cornwall and south Devon. The cottage has all the amenities you could require from a well appointed kitchen to a secluded barbecue and Swimming pool area. This cottage would be ideal either for families or for a couple just wanting to get away from it all. I would definitely recommend this property to friends and will be going back again next year.
