Self-Catering Reviews

Mr Turner-bailes
February 2020
The place was absolutely spotless and looked as it does in pictures.. It’s quite reasonably priced too. The overhead shower connection above the bath was over a sloping roof making it really difficult to shower. The sofa and armchair were quite uncomfortable. We were involved in lots of physical activity in the day and found these uncomfortable to come back to in an evening. The place was quite cold, luckily we had our own fan heater. If we had not, we would have been really unimpressed. The kitchen is basic, but fits short stays - no full oven, very limited utensils and pans. Overall, adequate for a very short (1-2 night) visit, but not longer.

So, its great its a great cottage if you want to eat out or get ready meals but if you want to do a bit of cooking then I wouldn't recommend it.. Very well located, it has a lovely bedroom and bathroom and great car parking. However the cooking facilities are not great if you want, for instance, to cook the locally sourced lamb chops. There is a multi function microwave and a 2 ring hob but no conventional oven. The two ring hob is too small to get the frying pan and a medium size saucepan on. The base plate on which the rings are mounted gets unexpectedly hot. Controlling the temperature of the two hobs is impossible and I resorted to switching them on and off to regulate heat. However, I did mange a spagbol without too much swearing.

Everything about this place just turned out right.. The place is ultra clean. - spotless ! Everything works ! Comfortable and friendly.....However, - the weather made it for us, - Haytime in the area lasts for some weeks and we were witness to the hard-working farming community gathering in this years hay, - a wonderful spectacle ! The walks in this area are easy and mostly flat.....just walk all day...for miles and miles......and then.......Middleton-in-Teesdale has several watering holes, and a Supermarket that stays open till 10pm ! How good is that ?...All in all - Faultless ! Twelve out of Ten !

Found it awkward that there wasn't a cooker with oven - just a microwave oven, so I would not have liked to have stayed there any longer than a few days.. The sofa and armchair weren't particularly comfortable. There was no shower.

This is the third or fourth time we have been for a few days to the area around Middleton and have found it very central being close to Bernard Castle.. The cottage is basically two rooms with downstairs is lounge/kitchen with upstairs a open plan bedroom, all being very spacious. It with the next door cottage being adjacent to the farm house which is beautifully kept as are the cottages. The cottage is ideal for a few days break but be aware it does not have a full size oven or a washing machine but knowing this there is all praise for it and its situation.

Nice area, good for walks, cycle rides and pubs. However the Agency's description of the property is very misleading. The property is very small and indescribably dark inside - you will have the (tungsten filament) lights on all the time. Yes, old cottages are dark, but the two windows on this property look out onto a grey 6' wall surmounted but a 20' yew and holly hedge. Early morning sun can't get in because of the trees on the other side of the lane. If you intend cooking anything much more than a tea bag you will find that difficult using the ancient microwave / combination and 2 ring electric hob which seems to get hot all over. If you bring in a takeaway there is no table to use*. If you eat it off your knees, there is not a coffee table to use. If you choose "al fresco", the "garden" is a gravel car park you will share with your neighbour, two wheelie bins and two dead pot plants. Upstairs there are two ill lit steps between the gallery bedroom and the bathroom which are a trip hazard at any time and at 2am in particular. At least gentlemen will know when they get there, because they will crack their head on the beam. Incidentally, there are no bathroom towels which is a bit rich for a 4 tick property. I am no architect but I suspect only the stone shell of the building is period and that everything else is 21st Century. * There is a "breakfast bar" but space is so limited we could not see how it was in any way useful.

Everything walkers with a dog could want from a holiday cottage. A cosy cottage with good quality appliances. The owner was friendly and most helpful. The cottage is in a perfect location, quiet but near enough to lovely walks good pubs serving super food. The outside garden/courtyard area is fully enclosed so safe to let the dog roam. Certainly ticked all our boxes!

Friendly welcome and closed in garden which the dog could roam in safety.. No noise which for a working farm was surprising. All villages were fairly close and the scenery fantastic.

We were made to feel welcome to Garden Cottage by the very helpful owner. The cottage is delightful and the area is lovely, not busy and not 'touristy'. Bar/Restaurant in village is excellent and would highly recommend. The enclosed garden is great for dogs as you can open the door and be sure they are safe to wander around. Would love to go back as we did enjoy it

Lovely location. off the beaten track and really quiet, just what you want in a country cottage, immaculately turned out, and in very good decorative order, Handy for the local walks and eateries, small only really suitable for 2 with a basic kitchen, but if you plan on being out a lot this wouldn't be an issue, our host couldn't have been more pleasant. Only down side is the small windows make the cottage a bit dark, but that's not really a major issue, overall a very well turned out small cottage, can't wait to get back to the area!

A nice and cosy cottage. Welcome-eggs. The cottage is small but enough for 2 adults. It is not easy to find if you are not from Great Britain. We missed the small road two times. But when we reached the "goal" it was, for us, typical English, nice and kind. We had a wonderful week with good weather and not so good weather. And I had never seen so much sheeps in my live.
