Self-Catering Reviews

January 2020
I wasn't going to leave a review as we had a bad experience during our 14 day stay when our 13-yr-old dog had a stroke and we had to put him to sleep the next day. But three or four days after checkout I received a text message from the cleaner which I didn't appreciate and I'll let you interpret it as you will. When we checked in the washing machine door was broken which the cleaner was aware of but hadn't had fixed before our arrival. After spending an hour with her husband trying to fix it, it was mended 4 days later, so we had no washing machine until then. We also had a couple more problems, it wasn't our first choice due to my mobility issues, but our first choice of rental had storm damage so we picked Fern Cottage. The stairs are very steep, which it does state. We were woken almost every morning at 5 a.m. by the neighbours through the thin walls. They shout and swear at the top of their voices until they leave the house around 07:45 on week days. The arguments and shouting is with each other and their children. The bathroom pull switch stopped working after a few days, the owners and cleaner were all on holiday. Eventually we got it working and had to leave it on day and night for the rest of the stay. Normally, I would have just walked away and left it there. Until I got the text stating: Thank you for leaving the property so easy to clean. Have you accidentally taken white and wooden hangers? I think you can interpret this message one of two ways. Giving the cleaner the benefit of the doubt, I texted back stating my husband had four shirts on his own hangers and I had one blouse on a padded hanger. We didn't use their hangers which are just on a coat rack there are no wardrobes. I also explained 5 days into our stay we'd lost our 13-yr-old dog, so I apologised if anything was left in the wrong place at all. It was then my son told me there were white hangers under the bed on the 2nd floor the day we arrived and they were still there when we left. There were no wooden hangers at all. I never got a reply, so I then complained to Sykes. I felt I'd been accused of leaving the holiday home dirty and stolen hangers. Sykes have just rung me to tell me the cleaner found the hangers under the bed. Neither did she text back to apologise or say she was sorry about our dog. So no, I wouldn't rate this as a nice play to stay.
