My wife and I recently spent a very enjoyable week at Felin Ship.. The place was very clean and very well equipped, and everything worked, which made a pleasant change. The extensive gardens leading down to the crystal clear river were a delight and wonderfully maintained. We are a mature couple, but we did not find the spiral staircase to be a problem. Although it was not pointed out to us, we found the outside stone steps on the end of the property to be very useful when moving large or awkward items up to, or down from, the bedrooms or the kitchen. The huge secure storeroom alongside the property was very useful for me to store my bike, and could be equally useful for storing other bulky items that were best stored outside the living area. The small kitchen diner was fine for the two of us but as there are three double bedrooms, the kitchen might be a bit crowded if all the beds were occupied. There is plenty of car parking space and a large turning area, but do watch the mirrors when driving out of the property as the exit is on a blind corner.

Felin Ship was everything, and more than we expected.. The cottage was set in beautiful landscaped gardens, with a river running at the bottom making it an idyllic and tranquil retreat, just what we needed. The cottage itself was very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. It was beautifully decorated, and everything was to a very high standard; the beds were comfortable, the bedding itself was just like snuggling into cotton wool, and I’ve never felt such soft towels as what Roland’s are, not even new ones, would love to know his secret. Dolgellau itself is a very pretty town, with cobbled streets lined with beautiful little cottages and all the amenities you need, all within easy walking distance from rhe cottage. Would highly recommend the cottage, and Sykes Cottages.

This cottage is close to town but quiet and tranquil. The presentation of both the cottage and garden is immaculate, and the added dimension of the river at the foot of the garden gives more of an impression of a countryside retreat. It is possible to walk out of the premises and be in a well-stocked supermarket or beautiful open countryside in just a few minutes. For those inclined to be active there are plenty of walks nearby, and bike storage on site. After a day in the country visitors will surely appreciate the superbly comfortable beds. Altogether a great place to stay.

Immaculate gardens and a lovely riverside location where you can watch the Heron and other birds drop in. The house itself is very well presented with just about everything you need for a short stay. There is internet if you need it and mobile reception is adequate too. It is on two levels with a spiral staircase - the stairs might be daunting for some but you can always nip out the kitchen door and come back in through the front. It would not however suit someone whose mobility is limited. The location is ideal, being on the edge of town, so it's quiet, but only a short walk to shops pubs and restaurants with which Dolgellau is well served. The road entrance could be a bit daunting, visibility is approximately zero, the two big mirrors are vital, you just have to remember that, to get visibility to your right you use the left mirror and vice versa. Rowland the owner lives next door and is only a door knock away if you need him. He is friendly and personable, don't be put off by the thorough Health and Safety briefing - he's a lawyer so he takes that sort of stuff very seriously. Once thats over he relaxes visibly, there are guide books and maps aplenty to help you plan your stay. . This would be suited either as a base to set out and explore the many attractions of North Wales or as a bolt hole, to just sit by the river and chill.

Cottage was superbly situated in glorious grounds by the river.. Dolgellau is an excellent centre for walking, cycling and sightseeing.

The Cottage and gardens were amazing, and very spacious.. Roland the owner had put a lot of thought into the little extras provided. We had a really enjoyable week despite inclement weather, the river runs at the bottom of the garden and the seating areas give great views. There’s plenty of walking in Dolgellau and it’s a great base to visit the rest of snowdonia national park. We will definitely return next year.

We have had a wonderful week staying in this very special place. Felin Ship is an extremely comfortable, well-managed holiday cottage. It is well-equipped, but unfussy and has been furnished and styled to a very high standard. However, it is its riverside position that really makes it outstanding. Although positioned just outside Dolgellau, when you're sitting in the extensive and beautiful gardens, watching the river burble by and, in the evening, cattle and sheep coming down to drink you feel miles from anywhere. It's just a gorgeous setting. Roland, the owner and host is extremely helpful, friendly and informative. He ensures that you understand how to make best use of the cottage, but is unobtrusive thereafter. We did enjoy chatting with him though. He has provided many useful guide books to help you plan your time here. We booked directly with Roland which we found very straightforward. He was always quick to respond to our enquiries. Looking at the pictures you will see that there is a spiral staircase leading upstairs from the lounge. Some people might be nervous about this, but we did not find it at all problematic. In all, we had a a really relaxing, comfortable week at Felin Ship and we are hoping to return to this very special cottage. Thank you so much Roland.

The property's main plus feature is the well kept garden and its beautiful aspect onto the river.. It is really close to the town yet is peaceful and secluded and very very relaxing. The cows and sheep, herons, egret and kingfisher seen enjoying the riverside were especially lovely. Roland's thorough introduction clearly outlines how he expects you to treat the house and garden which is not difficult. Once he knew what activities we were hoping to do he supplied excellent resources which really helped us make the most of the area. The lovely weather also helped:) The town is quirky and has super cafes to enjoy and its proximity to Cader Idris and the beautiful Mawdach Estury means that you do not need to waste time in the car to get the best of coast and mountain in the area. The cottage and especially the kitchen was very clean and well supplied but was a little tight for the 2 days there were 6 adults there. The kitchens position upstairs means carrying food down the spiral stairs or outside steps to eat in the garden was too difficult. The beds were really comfortable and we all slept well. I would definitely recommend this cottage and garden and hope to return at some point in the future.

Felin ship cottage is a clean and comfortable well equipped cottage.. The setting is idyllic, the garden over looking the Afon Winon. We watched a little Egret,Dippers, Wagtails a Heron and a Kingfisher with sheeps and cows grazing on the opposite bank. The garden is the produce of a lot of hard work on Roland’s part. Roland made us very welcome, telling us of the history of the mill and his renovations of the cottages of which he should be very proud.

The cottage was exactly how we had hoped it would be- clean, comfortable and in a beautiful, peaceful setting by the river.. The shops and eateries in Dolgellau were within easy walking distance and yet we felt we were out in the countryside in the heart of stunning Snowdonia.Roland was very helpful and friendly- we really benefited from his local knowledge.

What a great place to stay.. Just on the edge of Dolgellau, but 5 minutes from a supermarket and 10 minutes from the centre of town. The cottage also met our requirements, particularly my sons' needs for wifi, somewhere safe to store their mountain bikes, a decent shower, and somewhere to get a good night's sleep. I had a slight concern that the owner lives next door, and was worried him intruding on our holiday, or our intruding on him when we used the shared garden. I needn't have worried. After an initial tour of the property Roland left us to enjoy the holiday, but was available if we needed any help. He made two specific suggestions about places to visit and eat, both of which turned out to be excellent. The house itself was comfortable if you wanted to sit indoors. There were also plenty of films available on the tv to watch on the occasional rainy day that Wales sometimes has. On sunny days, the garden was a delight to sit in, with it's lawn running down to the river. Finally, would I stay there again. Most emphatically yes. It was one of the best cottages we have stayed in

Our stay at Felin Ship fitted our needs perfectly.. It was somewhere to meet and relax as a family and within easy walking distance of Dolgellau. When we arrived the owner was very welcoming, gave us a tour of the garden and property and he offered help at any time, should we need it. The cottage was smart, clean and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen. The highlight was the garden. Absolutely beautiful and its location on the river made it unbeatable on the warm, sunny days we had. A thoroughly enjoyable stay. Thank you Roland!

We booked the cottage for a short break with the family and grandchildren but wish it could have been longer.. The gardens and river had a real wow factor as we drove in. It was equally special to come back to from our days out. Great choice of things to do. Roland could not have been more helpful with our arrangements providing advise on what to do in the area. Great for mountain biking, walking or just relaxing by the river. Recommend “the Precipice walk” Loved the cottage. Everything we needed. > > Thank you Roland for being so accommodating.

Nice few days at Felin Ship but there are a couple of things that prevent me from giving it 5 stars. Upon arrival it is very much made clear that you are staying in the house of the owner, and with a strict regimented tour of the grounds and cottage one is left feeling somewhat intimidated and a feeling of intrusion. One is reminded of this when reading the welcome book with rules and regulations and seeing the numerous printed labels. The guest accomodation lacks homely feel and the sitting room, which is linked to the owners cottage by a internal door, combined with the office blinds and abundance of leaflets makes the space feel more like a doctors surgery waiting room than a place to relax. It is decorated however to a good standard and holds good furniture, however as of december 2017 the bedrooms didnt have any kind of heating which was countered by a lovely tog 3000 duvet which was if anything too warm but any uncovered body part felt the cold of the night. Taller people may struggle in bed as they have foot plates on which calls for some contorsion of the legs. Location 5/5 Cottage 3/5 Ground 5/5 Owner hospitality 2/5 It is with sad regret but the owners nature did let it somewhat leaving the group feel uncomfortable, though reading other more positive reviews, this may well be just our group. I hope you have a better experience. NOT a place for muddy mountain bikers!!

A fantastic spot with great view in front of the river.. The summer house and garden is lovely, and Felin Ship is very close to the centre of Dogellau whilst feeling very private and "in the countryside"

Within walking distance of the town of Dolgellau. Modern, compact, partial upside down accommodation, with the single living room downstairs and kitchen upstairs with x3 bedrooms, all with modern furnishings. The spiral staircase from the living room to the upstairs could be an issue for the infirm although my dad who's has early Parkinson's managed it. Roland is an attentive host, which is also demonstrated with his attention to detail throughout the cottage. The cottage has a lovely setting on the banks of a river with a mature garden and trees. The garden runs down to the river with a BBQ and benches. Roland has a modest bird feeding station attracting quite a variety of birds which is slowly adding to his garden list. This cottage had all the usual amenities one would expect and need. Really enjoyed our stay.

This gem of a cottage was perfect. Set in a lovely garden with river views. Every facility is provided and the house is really comfortable. The furnishings are top quality and the beds so comfortable I haven't slept that well in months. The house is just a few minutes' walk from the pretty town of Dolgellau, with an excellent range of places to eat and good sized supermarkets for everyday supplies. The house is really easy to reach and we explored all over North East Wales. The owner is very welcoming and helpful and made our visit really enjoyable. He has great ideas of things to do. If you filled all the beds then sitting down to a meal together would be a bit cosy and the spiral staircase might be an issue for some but we (including my mum in her 70s) had a great time and were really comfortable. We would definitely stay here again.

High quality accommodation, furnishings and host's thoughtful attention to detail ensures everything you would need for a trip away from home is catered for. Cottage is next door to owners home and benefits from the care and attention to detail he has taken to make it a clean and comfortable place to make your home for a week (or more). We felt very much at home here, the lovely location beside the river makes it a place to spend some quiet time not just a place to sleep between days out.

July 2014
Lovely cottage, with the most fab view. Lovely to look out in the morning to the tranquil river and quite beautiful garden, which the owner obviously works hard to ensure it stays that way. The cottage is very clean and beds are very comfortable. Well equipped and wonderful fluffy towels. This is a superb location, which we were able to access all the sights very easily and without having to travel for miles. Owner helpful and able to answer any questions.

June 2014
We had a really nice week - this cottage is in a great location overlooking a lovely river and countryside, with an immaculately kept garden going down to the rivers edge with a BBQ area by the riverside. There is not another building or road in sight, however it is just on the edge of town and really conveniently situated for the shops, supermarket and restaurants - everything is just a few minutes walk away. We could not fault the location or cottage in any way. There is a lot to do in the area; the Mawddach trial leading to Barmouth is lovely to walk or cycle, there are many mountain walks and mountain biking at Coed y Brenin. The local beaches are also lovely. The owner who lives next door was particularly helpful, he has a great knowledge of local walks and places to visit.

For once, the photos give a real sense of how nice a place is: this is a beautifully located house backing onto a lovely sloping lawn that leads down to the clear water of the river. The interior of the property is equally nice: comfortable and well equipped. The owner is really very helpful. And the location is great: lots of great walking and the coast at Barmouth is in easy reach by car or hired bicycle. We'd definitely go back and we don't often say that.
