The village of Great Ayton lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, at the foot of the Cleveland Hills. Great Ayton has two village greens, with a river running alongside, making it a popular picnic spot in the summer months. To the north of the village, the view is dominated by Roseberry Topping, a 330 metre hill. In the village are a good range of shops and inns, which, together with restaurants and cafés, cater well for holidaymakers. There is also the old school, now converted into the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum. Around the village are several interesting walks and Great Ayton makes a great base for walkers wishing to explore the stunning countryside around, especially in the summer months when the moors turn purple with blooming heather.

Really quite a few defects, garden is much to be desired, door unable to open in sitting room, no DVDs player as advertised, no finishing touches, :- soft lamps in sitting room or bedrooms, kitchen not enough pots ( bowls , pans , cutlery tray dirty, no ironing board or iron and having discovered no wardrobes or chest of drawers upstairs an iron was much needed as clothes were creased with not being hung up! !! Very poor heating system, wifi slow and intermittent, sticky front door lock, no shelves in bathroom or shower room to put toiletries on, broken toilet roll holder, vacuum not working ..... I could go on, all in all disappointing , tlc urgently required

Cottage is so perfect when bringing your dogs .. . . Flag stone floors mean no worrying about dirty paws, especially on cold & wet days! Beds are very comfortable & the kitchen is well stocked. Relieved there was a dish washer as water was only warm most of the time. Loved the cottage but not having access to heating controls meant it was chilly when in the cottage during the day. Wet room was ideal but again lack of hot water could be an issue if more than 2-3 people

Great location for exploring the area

The cottage is advertised as having wi fi but it didn’t work.. Large groups might find the avaiablity of hot water to be an issue particularly if the next door cottage is also occupied....something to do with the biomass boiler which was explained to us on checking in. A welcome pack with basic essentials would be a positive as there are no shops near by. Frying pans could do with replacing! All in all very spacious and comfortable place to stay in the North Yorkshire countryside.

The description of the cottage was obviously done when the cottage was refurbished.. When arriving the outside looked scruffy. The inside had lovely furniture.. but it was soon clear that the lack of attention to detail and ongoing maintenance let this cottage down. No 'garden' as listed just an overgrown mound with broken stuff in one corner...

Cottage very open plan and not conducive for 4 adult guests, with only 2 of the guests being in a relationship, ideal for a family with small children.. Obviously well used as furniture, crockery etc quite tired. Advised to use bottled water, this can get a bit expensive. Dudley Arms pub in village really good. Bit further away is the Sutton Arms, best meal ever, in fact went twice.

Very helpful & friendly hosts.. There was an issue with the WiFi which wasn't working properly, but I was happy that the kids didn't have too much WiFi! The property was overall excellent.

A fantastic holiday made particularly special by the warm welcome and helpful and friendly attitude of the owners. We were made to feel like family visiting rather than guests. Extremely dog friendly - even had a doggie shower in the stable! A great location, amazing people, definitely on the cards for a return visit.

We loved our holiday in this beautiful cottage, the location and surrounding area were perfect for me and my family. And the fact that they allow dogs is great, we have a boarder Collie who also loved it. My children loved the beach, so the fact that Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay were nearby was a big plus. We would definitely return to this cottage and would strongly recommend.
