Property Description

Holiday home
Originally a stone barn, this property has been lovingly and tastefully restored to offer open-plan living accommodation for two people. Much of the cottage's original charm has been preserved through the retention of original features such as exposed beams, sloping ceilings and wooden floorboards. Visitors will also have access to an acre of land which is bordered by a walled garden. Fully centrally heated, it can act as a warm and peaceful base at any time of year.

Accomodation Details
One double bedroom with low sloping ceilings. Ground floor shower room with shower, basin and WC. Open plan living area with fitted kitchen, dining area and sitting area with woodburner.

Area
Danby is a charming village located towards the head of the Esk Valley. At the heart of Danby is the village green where Scotch Blackface sheep keep the grass down all year round. The village itself is well served by a pub, a bakery and café, a village store and a post office. The North Yorkshire Moors National Park has a visitor's centre just outside the village. Here visitors can learn something of the history of area and be directed to all manner of walks from a short stroll to longer treks for serious ramblers. There are quite often demonstrations of local crafts and farming skills in the area. North of the Moors' centre lies the valley of Clitherbeck where coal mining used to take place.

Region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

We found the cottage to be both comfortable and warm and it is in a lovely position with the moors just a short walk away.. Sarah made us feel welcome from the start of our holiday and we admired her paintings on the walls of the property. The kitchen is well equipped so it is not difficult to self cater.

This is a fabulous little cottage in the beautiful North York Moors.. Everything was there that we needed including fuel and logs for the log burner which made for a very cosy nights in. The views both from the cottage and in the surrounding areas are stunning, but you are only a short drive from Whitby and Staithes. Sarah the host, and her animals were very welcoming and our little dog loved the walks in the countryside.

Lovely little cottage for that quiet weekend away.. Myself and wife went for our 4th wedding anniversary and only 20 min drive to whitby. Was a lovely weekend with all amminities. Lovely log burner and the bed was lovely and comfy. Only negative is the steep drive up which we got stuck and had to roll the car backwards and few times to get up as a dirt track and very sloppy. Also no wifi but didnt spoil it.

What a location, on the moor side with morning views across the valley and into the moors of North Yorkshire. Based on an old farm with chickens in the yard, sheep in the fields and horses in the stables. Down a gated lane and across the farm track, it made the ideal quite location often sort after. The cottage was great, simple accommodation, bedding clean, clean bathroom and great atmosphere for a weekend break for two. Log fire and central heating to boot. All the required amenities provided. We just took food for breakfast eating locally for the rest in the many pubs and restaurants around the Whitby area. Though dog friendly we noted the yard with chickens brought some feet wiping on entry. Not a problem but we were charged for the dog. A great stay would fully recommend it for those who accept the farm type accommodation and not the Ritz.

We had a great time, the location suited us as we have a farm back ground which in this case suited us down to the ground.. It was just comfortable for a few nights, clean and facilities were what was expected and of course dog friendly. The property had fantasist views into the valley and the North York moors beyond, well off the beaten track down a gated road, which suited us. Chickens in the yard and ponies in the stables, sheep on the moor and rabbits every where. Due to a booking problem it wasn't quite ready on arrival but was soon sorted and made ready. The bathroom was clean as was the kitchen and linen. A big log fire kept us warm in the evenings. Pubs and eateries not far away and easy driving to Whitby and the beaches, moors and valleys

The location was lovely and quiet, the cottage was cozy, it was the lack of cleanliness that was a disappointment, mugs and cutlery were dirty we had to wash them, the shower had hairs in it, the bed wasn’t pleasant it didn’t seem like the sheets had been cleaned at all, there were hairs under the duvet, and stains all over the sheets, there was a wet patch on the bed like it had just been scrubbed with a cloth and left as it was, we took the sheets off we didn’t feel comfortable sleeping on them, didn’t really feel the cleanliness was up to standard which was disappointing, let the cottage down.. Never saw the owner to enquire about anything, the location and surroundings were lovely just a shame about the cleanliness

Daffodil cottage is set among some of the most beautiful scenery the North York Moors has to offer.. The cottage itself is very comfortable. The rustic decor is enhanced by the very attractive original paintings that hang on the walls. A wood burning stove keeps the place nice and toasty on chilly evenings. The view from the front of the cottage is simply stunning and from the back window you can watch the rabbits, which are extremely numerous, grazing on the back lawn. Free range hens wonder around the farmyard with horses and dogs completing the picture. Plenty of information was available with useful suggestions of nearby places to visit although many fine walks are right on the doorstep. Highly recommended.

Lovely old stone cottage, updated to make a perfect holiday retreat high in the North York Moors. The cottage is well appointed, clean and comfortable, surrounded by cottage garden planting and with its own secluded garden too. We were made most welcome by the owner and Ted the dog showed our own dog the ropes. The scenery and wildlife are spectacular and there are a couple pubs within walking distance. The bright lights of Whitby are 20 minutes way if you need a kiss-me-quick hat, but there is perfect moorland to walk on all around if you prefer peace and quiet. Simply lovely and we'll be back.

Daffodil Cottage was lovely, very homely, cosy and quiet which was perfect for a week away. The log fire was especially lovely. It was within easy driving distance of Whitby and there were numerous nice walks basically on the doorstep.

We loved every bit of this spot! The cottage was perfectly rustic with stone walls, wood beams and beautiful pine floors throughout. Every window revealed the most spectacular scenery, and walking paths were truly right outside the front door. It was only a ten-fifteen minute drive to the beaches. Couldn't have asked for a more inspiring location!

Wonderful and relaxing stay. We found the cottage to be very clean, great cooker/oven (must have now been replaced since last reviews). The owner is very firendly and accommodating. Great views all around the valley and excellent pub down the road in Lealholm. Will definitely be staying here again.

February 2015
We had a lovely relaxing winter's break here. The area was still snow covered when we arrived and we were worried in case the cottage wasn't warm enough, but it was so snug and cosy even before we got the log burner going. The owner was lovely - she kept in communication with us during the journey up and offered to help us with our stuff on arrival. Our little toddler loved seeing the horses, chickens and Ted the dog every day. The cottage had all the cutlery and cooking equipment to enable us to mostly self-cater. The cottage itself is lovely, comfortable and romantic, and the location is wonderful - loads to do within a short drives distance, but remote enough to feel a million miles from anywhere with beautiful views in every direction. It was a pleasure to go back there, light the fire and relax after a day of being out and about. We only stayed three nights and visited Whitby and Staithes, we'd love to go back and do some more walking in the area, make it over to Scarborough, Robin Hood's bay and ride on the steam train.

Daffodil Cottage is a lovely, cosy cottage set in beautiful surroundings. The owner is friendly and helpful and the local area is fantastic to explore with countless different options for walks within a short drive. On bad weather days curling up in the cottage with the log burner and a cake from the local bakery in Danby is a perfect way to spend the day!

January 2015
The views from the front and rear of this cottage are superb, the living area is quite small, the bedroom area more spacious. Daffodil Cottage is terraced between the owner`s own home and another holiday cottage Wildflower Cottage (sleeps 6). It is up a very steep hill (could be tricky in icy conditions) and along an unmade track so very quiet and in the yard immediately outside the cottage are the chickens, owner`s horses and a friendly dog. The bedroom area we found to be very comfortable and having lovely views from the sky light windows. We were however extremely disappointed at the general uncleanliness of the kitchen area, the two pans available were extremely old, one damp moulded and so we could not possibly use them, the toaster was really dirty and we could not use that either, the kettle was really dirty and dusty too, we wiped that down and guessed given the water would be boiled we`d be fairly safe to drink it as with the microwave, we gave that a good wipe down before use too. Well, the oven is in need of replacement, it was dirty, my husband wanted to clean it so that we could actually cook the food we had arranged to be delivered just after our arrival (it was a Christmas stay). I did not see why my husband should start cleaning an oven out, instead, we donated the oven food to relatives who lived nearby to use and we went out shopping again for food that we could microwave ! Even if the oven had have been clean it would not have been fit for purpose because the controls are completely faded, it is guess work as to the temperature and the door does not close properly. The toilet we found to be un flushed on arrival which raised doubts as to if the bathroom area had been cleaned at all. Don`t be put off renting this cottage though, if you plan on eating out as it is in a lovely location and the owner is apparently quite friendly by all accounts although we cannot comment on this, as it was over Christmas, short dark cold days and so we did not see each other once initial friendly introductions had been made. It might well be, having raised our concerns with SYKES who welcomed feedback and were going to have a word with the owner, that the cooker, pans and toaster have all been replaced now and will be left clean upon handover. We stay in a SYKES cottages five times a year and this is the first time we have ever rated a review as poorly as this one.

OK we should have read the details more carefully so we were surprised that towels wee not included - unusual in this day and age. The oven was a bit of a mystery too as the temperature scales had worn off and the door doesn't close properly which made cooking a little hit and miss. Other than these things the cottage was cozy and the views from outside the door outstanding. The cottage is out of the village and very quiet with some lovely walking straight from the front door.

We had an amazing stay at Daffodil Cottage, we can't recommend it enough. It's up a little lane and along a farm track, very easy to get to. The Cottage it's self is quirky and perfect for 2, we could not fault our stay. We loved the chickens running about as well as the super cute and friendly pet dog. The owner is lovely, very welcoming indeed. Its the Perfect base to go exploring as well as a perfect place to stay for a cosy night in with the log burner on! You really need to stay to appreciate the area, the views and the experience of staying in this lovely cottage.

We were looking for a cottage near River Esk. Over looking the Esk Valley, the location of this cottage is a pleasant surprise. Sarah was very friendly and helpful. My son was very excited to see so many animals. It is an ideal place for hiking, painting and photography. The food in nearby pubs, such as the Board Inn in Lealholm, was excellent. Overall, we enjoyed everyday while staying there.

Just back from a nice week here. The cottage is perfect for a couple, it had everything we needed. The best part was opening the door into the yard and having horses in the fields, chickens wandering about and a very friendly cat and dog too :) The owner is very nice and laid back which suited us perfect. No hassles. We were able to store our bikes and wash them without any problems, which is a big plus for us. It's situated almost on the moors and is easily accessed from a few different directions. If you want to get away from your usual daily life and chill, this just might be the place for you :) We will be back.

Daffodil Cottage is a converted barn situated on the North Yorks Moors. It has been beautifully converted into an idyllic and cosy home from home. Access is via an unmade farm track after a climb up a very steep country road although that should not in any way deter any visitor!! The cottage itself is ample for two, the bathroom is ideal with a shower and there are plenty of pots and pans, crockery and cutlery. The bedroom is lovely althogh I have 2 say between us we were a tad bemused at the identical lamps inside - we could not get them to switch on for toffee!!! The area is beautiful - there are lots of little villages nearby with things to do or see - the Moors Centre in Danby, Goathland where Heartbeat was filmed and Rydale Folk Museum in Hutton - le -Hole to mention but a few. A few miles in either direction takes you to Whitby, famous home of Dracula and in the other direction to the market town of Guisborough although York with its attractions are not too far a drive away! We had every day company from the friendly resident anilmals, cats, dog and open the door and you're face to face with horses in the stable!!! It was a bonus to be able to use the washing and druing facilities of the owner at any time, there were plenty of muddy clothes!! To just be able to pull on your boots, leave the cottage and be in such surroundings is truly inspiring. Although I live not too far away my partner is from Norfolk and was stunned by the surroundings and what the North has to offer. We had such a relaxing, quiet break - it was all we asked for and so much more and we will definately go back for further visits.

This is a nice little cottage. It is not exactly spacious downstairs but quite adequate for two people, assumin gyou'll be going out most days. The bedroom is nice and spacious. Pity about the bathroom being downstairs (especially in the middle of the night!). It is equipped very well and I had no problems. Location wise it is excellent, you are not far from many moorland places. There is Whitby and the coast, Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorks Railway, etc. or just stay local and enjoy the countryside. Shopping is sparse locally, but Guisboreough and Whitby aren't too far away, so just stock up. Be careful of the lane approaching the cottage, it is rough and single track. So, overall a nice little cottage and if you want to get away to the country, rather than have lots of bars and clubs etc. this will suit you nicely. Oh yes, there's a friendly cat who will visit you as well!
