Self-Catering Reviews

October 2020
This cottage is well positioned, only a short walk (literally a couple of minutes) from the centre of the town, yet is nice and quiet on a back street with little traffic. It is very cosy with a wood burning stove in the living room and comfortable furniture to relax in. It is nicely decorated with good attention to detail. I couldn't find anything that hadn't been thought of. There are torches, board games, books, DVDs, blankets etc. A great base to explore Holmfirth and the surrounding area.
October 2020
Cottage is nice, clean and centrally located for the village.. Nice welcome pack and good communications from the host in advance of the village. Be advised, however, that the lounge is overlooked by the road, meaning that the frequently passing pedestrians can see in. Although the cottage is in an elevated position above the village, it does not enjoy any views. The main bedroom is fine and has good storage but the smaller of the two should really be a single rather than a 'small double' as currently configured, as this room has no storage at all (because the 'small double' bed leaves no space for drawers/wardrobe).

This cottage has EVERYTHING provided. In addition to what you would normally expect to find in self-catering accommodation, there are umbrellas, hairdryers, first aid kit, board games, books, DVDs...nothing is missed, it's a true home from home, comfortable and cosy, set in a lovely old lane. Some people have mentioned the steep stairs, but unless you have walking difficulties you won't find them too much of a problem. Just take a little extra care, especially the first step going down to the basement kitchen. There is a slope, too, in the lane itself, but, again, it's not too bad. Highly recommend, would definitely stay there again. Holmfirth itself has lots of eateries and shops and there is a bus station just 10 minutes walk away from the cottage.

This was our first stay somewhere since lockdown and I can't fault it in any way. Measures have been put in place to make sure everyone is safe from entering to leaving. Right from booking to checking out the communication with the hosts was outstanding. The cottage itself is faultless. Decorated beautifully, every kitchen utensil you would need for cooking a meal, games, books & big selection of DVDs. Perfect location for popping into town - literally a minute walk and you're in the centre. We will definitely be back to stay at this wonderful cottage.

Absolutely gorgeous cottage.. It was everything we expected and more. Clean comfy and home from home. You will not be disappointed if you book this cottage. Oh and only 2 mins from the town and we parked on the lane all weekend Jane and Steve Warrington xx

July 2020
A great holiday, helped with great weather for somewhere so unpredictable.. Cottage was clean and comfortable with everything we needed for a pleasant week. Quite a quirky layout with a subterranean kitchen but added to the experience. Very comfortable beds for a good nights sleep after lengthy walks. location great for access to restaurants and eateries. Parking was a little tight on the road, with very tight lanes but thankfully my wing mirrors were still intact at the end of the week. Perfect for local walks and places of interest. Great reservoir walks and Yorkshire Sculpture Park nearby (recommended!). Overall an excellent holiday

Coombes Hill Cottage is a cosy, very comfortable place to stay.. The owner’s Rebecca and David have thought of everything you could possibly need for a relaxing holiday. It certainly is somewhere to look forward to returning after a day out exploring the area.
January 2020
Best place to stop if you want to be close to all the shops & last of the summer wine locations. Walking distance to the chip shop and a massive co op (perfect for your food shopping). Cosy cottage big enough for a family of 3. Love the cosy kitchen even with the steep stairs and beds were so comfy and warm.
Mrs Elston, February 2020

Beautiful cottage felt like home from the start.. Cosy, clean and well equipped. Two minutes walk to Holmfirth town were we shopped and had coffee and cake in the renowned Sid’s Cafe. Astounding views from the bedroom windows, wish I could live here.

September 2019
Stayed at coombes hill cottage for seven nights, very happy with our stay, lovely cottage.. Ideal location for Holmfirth centre, plenty of pubs and restaurants. Although there is no dedicated parking we managed to park on back lane within 50 m every night.
Mr Langley, September 2019
June 2019
Our first three priorities are always - cleanliness, mattresses of good quality / condition, and an appropriately sized TV.. The cottage met these perfectly. Stairs down to the kitchen are very steep, as clearly stated in the ‘Summary’, but we mastered them. LOTSW fans will know Holmfirth is all hills, so expect slopes and steps to walk the 100yds or so to the shops, the little river, and elsewhere through town. We always managed to park in the cottage’s narrow lane, not far away. (It’s just too tight to park outside the door). There’s a big co-op, ten minutes walk away, and a closer Sainsbury’s, to get your groceries. The bus station is five mins away, with a good service to Huddersfield and beyond. Cottage is ideal to explore the Summer Wine dynasty and haunts. Very poignant to visit Upperthong Church where Compo and Clegg are laid to rest: 20 mins walk away.
Mr Coles, June 2019
May 2019
A beautiful cottage in a great location, very central to the small town of Holmfirth.. The kids loved the quirky nature of the layout (3 stories with Kitchen on bottom and Living room above). Very clean and calming.
Mr Kitson, May 2019
May 2019
Not only was the cottage beautiful and comfortable, the location is unbelievable.. Right in the heart of Holmfirth which as a first time visitor is an amazing place. If you are thinking of visiting Holmfirth, I'd recommend that you try and book coombes hill cottage.

We had a fantastic stay at Coombes Hill Cottage.. It's in a great position, just a very short walk to all the amenities that Holmfirth has to offer. The cottage is very clean and immaculately presented. We would highly recommend it.

Fantastic Little Cottage.. ..owners have thought of everything...true home from home...would love to stay here again.
November 2018
Thank you to Rebecca and David for our holiday in your little cottage. They are the best hosts, the cottage was beautifully equipped and furnished and very warm at all times. Holmfirth is a place that you immediately miss when you leave it; there is always something more to do and it is impossible to be bored there. Parking is not always possible outside the cottage but is available just down the road in a cheap car park. Love all the little independent shops in Holmfirth, some of which only come to light on walking through the narrow streets and ginnels. Holmfirth Spice is the best take-away ever. We will be back

Just spend a lovely few days in this wonderful home from home. The owners have thought of everything you could possibly need and more, even torches to help you see home in the dark. Very clean and beautifully decorated. Highly recommend

Good to warn of steep staircases..
October 2018
Thank you so much Rebecca for our stay in your lovely cottage. It was spotlessly clean, warm and welcoming. Located in the heart of Holmfirth, everything was walking distance. I would highly recommend it. I loved the decor and extras supplied.
August 2018
We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful cottage. The owners provided us with anything we could ever need, and more! The cottage was absolutely spotless and presented beautifully, it really felt like a home away from home. We are going to miss having a bakery so close (it is worth checking out, only a 2/3 min walk). The Tap House was brilliant for food and drink, Shimla is an excellent Indian, and pubs like the Old Bridge Inn and the Elephant and Castle were superb for a drink. The Huntsman Inn (5 min drive away) had the best Sunday roast I have eaten in a while. Also, if you need to watch football, the Box Office bar in the PictureDrome was great. As you can see, this cottage is perfect and right in the centre of everything. We cannot wait to return!
Ms Sweeney, September 2018
August 2018
This was the first time that my partner and I had booked a short weekend stay in a cottage.. We were certainly not disappointed! We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful cottage. The owners provided us with anything we could possibly want, and more. The communication with the owners was exceptional and they provided us with information in regard to where to eat, shop, and walk. The cottage was spotless and really felt like a home away from home. We cannot wait to return! So impressed!
Ms Colino, August 2018
August 2018
We stayed in Holmfirth as we were meeting up with family.. We found the cottage cosy and clean and all we needed. The owners messaged to say the cottage was ready early for us which was lovely. If you have walking difficulties it may be a struggle as it’s very steep out with. We parked our car twice near the cottage but it’s very tight to find a space, we payed the £2.80 for all day parking in car park at the bottom of the street. The cottage is great for a couple and has everything you need can’t fault it really. If I’m honest Holmfirth was disappointing but that’s just my opinion. If your looking for a stay in that area then Coombes cottage is ideal.
Mrs Gill, August 2018
July 2018
Just a stones throw from sids cafe the cottage is tucked away in a quiet back water above Holmfirth high street.. Set on three levels we found the cottage to be modern and clean and very comfortable with parking throughout the week just a few yards away along Back Lane.
Mr Harrocks, July 2018
June 2018
The cottage is beautifully decorated & all furnishings are top quality.. The owners obviously care very much that you enjoy your holiday & communication was excellent. Location is great for central Holmfirth & visiting the wider area. Holmfirth itself is worth visiting especially if you are a summer wine fan , we really enjoyed the bus tour that goes from the infamous cafe. It takes you all over the valley & the views are fabulous. There’s a good choice of restaurants don’t miss Mezze or the Whippet & Pickle. We would highly recommend this accommodation.
Mr Jordan, June 2018
June 2018
We were really looking forward to this trip & we’re not disappointed at all.. The cottage was perfect for a long weekend stay. It was immaculately clean, smelled lovely, was very homely & comfortable, it had everything we needed & more. The communication by Sykes & the owners of the cottage was warm, friendly & very informative. I would love to stay at this property again and would happily use Sykes Cottages again in the future.
Miss Pini, June 2018
May 2018
The cottage is very clean and well equipped, in a great location and has lots of nice touches from the host.. We took our 12 week old baby and had a lovely time, but in case it is not obvious to others (as it wasn't to us in planning) Holmfirth and its cobbled alleys and narrow pavements are not pram friendly and most of the cafes are a difficult squeeze too accessibility wise. If you can't park near the cottage, a bit tricky - but not impossible - to transport baby and luggage and navigating the stone steps down to the kitchen with a baby in hand is a bit daunting too - just be aware before booking.
April 2018
What can i say except that this cottage was a delight to stop in, there wasn't a single thing wrong with it the hosts have thought of everything, its decorated to a very high standard and has all the luxuries of home.it is in an ideal location situated near all the pubs restaurants and shops and the amount of info the hosts have put together is outstanding.we will definitely be stopping there again. Thanks to the Dave and Rebecca.

April 2018
The cottage is in a great location, within a couple of minutes walk into the centre of Holmfirth where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs to occupy your time. The cottage itself was spotless and in excellent condition throughout. It had all the amenities you would require and was snug, cosy and very much home from home. Would definitely recommend to others and communication and attention to detail from the hosts was impeccable pre, during and post our stay.
Mrs Mahon Ball, May 2018
April 2018
Accommodation was excellent, spotlessly clean and well equipped.. The stairs are a little steep but nothing we couldn't handle. Took our slippers as per recommended by previous reviews and felt at home immediately. Will definitely stay longer on our next visit.
Mrs Gale, April 2018
April 2018
This is a fantastic cottage, spotlessly clean and extremely well equipped.. It has everything you could wish for in a holiday cottage with lovely little extras. Holmfirth is a lovely place to chill with good restaurants, bars and shops and is the perfect base for going on walks and exploring nearby towns. It's always nice to return to the cosiness of the cottage. We enjoyed our stay so much that we are rebooking for next year.
Mrs Hughes, March 2018
March 2018

March 2018
Coombes Hill Cottage is the best one I have ever booked, just got home from our second visit there and will definitely be booking again for a holiday next year.. Not one thing to fault, everything is thought about down to a T and the log fire is our favourite aspect! 10/10!!
February 2018
We had a lovely weekend at Coombes hill cottage. The cottage is delightful with everything you could possibly need and more. It was spotless clean and a joy to stay in. Just a few minutes walk to the town centre with shops bars and restaurants.

February 2018
The cottage is centrally located and within walking distance of shops, restaurants and pubs in the center of Holmfirth. The cottage is well equipped and maintained if rather small. There is not enough room for 4 adults; my wife and I and adult son filled the bedrooms and closet. Back Lane is very narrow so we parked our small SUV in the car park on the main road below the cottage.
Mrs Powell, March 2018
February 2018
Coombs hill cottage is one of the best and most well equipped cottages we have stayed in.. It is spotless clean ( home from home ) it has everything you could possibly need and more. It is a real credit to the owners. I am sure we will go back and stay there again. Also it’s a stones throw to the town centre with lots of shops, bars and restaurants, and of course the famous last of the summer wine cafe etc.
January 2018
We have just returned from a lovely holiday at Coombes Hill Cottage ,Holmfirth . Everything is provided for a comfortable stay in this very cosy cottage . Good pubs and restaurants are just a stroll away ....Perfect .
January 2018
We chose to stay in this cottage due to the lovely pictures on the website however upon arrival our expectations were exceeded! This cottage has everything you could possibly need and I would definitely recommend x
January 2018
We stayed in Coombes Hill cottage over the New Year and it was wonderful. The cottage is like a home from home. It's tastefully decorated. warm, cosy, clean and very well equipped. It had everything we could possibly want. The cottage is only a few minutes walk from Holmfirth centre which has lots of great places to eat, drink and shop. It's also on a quiet lane which meant there was very little traffic noise. Car parking on the lane is tight but we had no problems getting a spot. We would highly recommend Coombs Hill Cottage for a relaxing break.
Mrs Brocklehurst, February 2018
January 2018
We had such a lovely stay in the cottage, Please don't take any utensils! ! They have everything you could wish for. I wanted to take the bed home with me, best nights sleep ever. We thought parking could be an issue but was not the case. Location perfect and and holmfirth is such a charming village with some excellent pubs and restaurants.

December 2017
I've stayed in a few cottages in the last couple of years and this one is by far the best. Absolutely beautiful. The pictures of the cottage look amazing but in person, it's even better. Clean, tidy and perfectly decorated. The kitchen is more stocked up with cutlery and utensils than our own at home. We felt right at home before we had even unpacked. Holmfirth is a lovely small town with lots to see. The snow on the mountains in the background made it all the more beautiful. Would definitely stay here again. Thank you for such a wonderful stay.
Mr Jackson, January 2018
December 2017
The website description is accurate.. We are 2 close friends of retirement age. A small and cosy cottage with plenty of light. You need to be able to manage stairs ok which are steep and narrow with 1 handrail. Very comfortable, great beds, modern bathroom, very well equipped kitchen, delightful details to make you feel at home. Road outside is quiet. It is quite narrow. Parking space in the road but not directly outside the front door. A lovely stay in a beautiful area both for driving and walking.
Oliver, December 2017
November 2017
Lovely, cosy cottage.. Beautifully maintained and absolutely spotless. Everything provided for a fantastic break - dvds, books (especially those about walks in the area), games, brollies, welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk and biscuits and even torches to help with the short walk back from the pub/restaurants. Holmfirth has all you need as well. Lovely, lovely, lovely.
October 2017
We recently spent a week in this delightful cottage. It is beautifully decorated and furnished with a lots of thought and great flair. It is very comfortable and everything had been thought of to make our stay enjoyable plus lots of extras that you wouldn't normally expect in a holiday cottage. It was spotlessly clean and just a short walk from the centre of Holmfirth. Holmfirth is an interesting small town and the surrounding scenery is stunning.
Ms Law, November 2017
October 2017
A lovely cottage with all you could need to make your stay enjoyable.. We felt extremely relaxed.

September 2017
accurately described and a very nice cottage. If you have any mobility issues, be mindful that the stairs down to the (basement) kitchen and upstairs to the bedrooms are step.....and steps down to the town are also step. If 4 people, be mindful of the smaller "double" bed in the 2nd bedroom. The cottage itself is small but very good. very clean, very warm, very comfortable. The owners have obviously put a lot of care and attention into it and it is very well equipped. Some very nice "finishing touches" to welcome you. Definitely recommend it to others
September 2017
Central location was excellent and the cobbled lanes around the property added to its charm. Coombes Hill Cottage is very well appointed, a real home from home. The tea, biscuits and milk in the fridge awaiting our arrival was very welcome indeed. Would certainly make a return visit to it, Holmfirth and the surrounding area.
Mr Banyard, October 2017
September 2017
We really enjoyed our week in this delightful cottage.. It has been decorated and furnished with a lot of thought and great flair. Not only is it very comfortable, but absolutely everything had been thought of to make our stay enjoyable plus lots of extras that you don't usually find in a rented holiday cottage

Beautiful cottage, very clean and tidy. Vibrant little town. Loved our journey through the ginnels. A 'home from home ' .
Mrs Heard, September 2017
July 2017
What a pretty cottage.. Tastefully decorated and furnished to a very high standard. Equipped with everything needed to enjoy a wonderful holiday. Absolutely spotless. Shops, pubs, and restaurants only a few minutes walk into Holmfirth. Walks, starting from the front door and in all directions, taking you amongst the most beautiful scenery. We did not move the car in our two weeks stay as there is an excellent bus service. There are regular links to many cities, towns and lovely villages. The neighbours and local people are so friendly and helpful. We had a problem and Rebecca and Dave sorted it out immediately. Thank you so much for all those "little extras", we really did appreciate them. Stayed for 2 weeks , with so much to see and do which we could have stayed longer. Our best wishes for the future, Pauline & Ronnie Sunderland, Tyne & Wear
Miss Smith, July 2017
June 2017
Lovely cottage in every way - very comfortable with beautiful furnishings.. Thoughtful welcome gifts and well stocked with books and dvds and leaflets for local attractions. Great quiet location in a little town with everything you'd need.
May 2017
The owners of this cottage have done a fantastic job of making it cosy, homely and clean as a whistle. They have thought of everything you could possibly need for your stay including shampoo and conditioner! It's beautifully decorated as well. It's very close to all the shops and cafes in Holmfirth, literally 2 minutes walk. Only things to be aware of when booking is parking is tight on the back lane but you can park elsewhere and I think you'd find this problem on most of the town centre streets. And that the second bedroom, as stated, only has a 4 foot bed not a double, so be prepared to cuddle up (or top and tail as we did!). Also the property is over 3 floors and the stairs are steep for anyone with mobility problems. But honestly this is a gorgeous place and we had a wonderful time staying for the weekend as a group of old uni friends recently.
Ms Fanaken, June 2017
May 2017
This property was excellent in every way.. Everything had been thought about so well. Location is perfect. We will definitely return.
Mrs Conneely, May 2017
May 2017
The place was gorgeously decorated and well stocked.. Very well located and very clean. Only things are as stated: parking is tight, accommodation is over 3 steep floors and 1 bed is only 4 foot.

April 2017
We stayed here for a birthday weekend, which also happened to be a beautiful Spring weekend, so Holmfirth was beautiful. It was still cold, though, so it was great to have this cosy cottage with its fire. Lovely to get into town through the tiny lanes on the hillside, and Holmfirth (as the owner told us) is one thing in the day and another at night: jigsaw-box pretty in the day, and at night great food (fish and chips to the high-end Black Cat bistro) and bars selling microbrews - all within three or four minutes of this great wee cottage.
Mrs Tyler, May 2017
April 2017
This cottage became like a home to our family for the last 10 days.. It's just amazing the location, the property, well equipped and a place to go back to. We loved it. We travelled everyday one hour distance to the most beautiful places in the region and we found many surprises.
March 2017
We loved the cottage. It is so comfortable and cosy, and furnished and decorated to a high standard, we were impressed. It had everything we needed. Our stay was short and so we felt that we only scratched the surface of what Holmfirth has to offer. The central location of the cottage, however, meant that we didn't waste any time getting to where we wanted to be. We plan to return to get to know Holmfirth better and to explore the dramatic surrounding countryside and will book the cottage again.
March 2017
Just had a lovely weekend in this cottage. It was spotlessly clean, comfortable and so homely. The owners have thought of everything and given great attention to detail. The log burner gives a really lovely feel to a winters evening with a glass of wine. Holmfirth is vibrant and full of places to eat and drink and literally only around a 2 minute walk to the centre. We thoroughly enjoyed the Picturedrome music venue and will definitely be back.
Mrs Miranda, April 2017
March 2017
This is a charming little cottage tucked away behind the church offering very quick access to the town.. The owners have paid great attention to furnishing and equipping Coombes Hill and it offers a very cosy and comfortable holiday base.
February 2017
We have just spent a lovely week in Holmfirth in this beautiful cottage which was ideally situated, just a few steps away from Holmfirth centre, where there is a multitude of pubs, cafes, restaurants, wine bars and shops to keep you occupied. We were early surprised by the variety of restaurants and nightlife. Coombes Hill Cottage, is in a perfect location, really well equipped with everything you could possibly need and is beautifully finished. The wood burning stove was lovely on winter evenings,10 out of 10 for the helpful owners who seem to have thought of everything. We would highly recommend Brambles Bar, The Tap House, The Old Bridge Inn and the Shimla Indian restaurant. The fish and chips on Hollowgate are lovely and seems to be open all hours. For something different, a visit to the Carding Shed retro cafe is worth a look. We didn't have enough time to try everything on offer but will be back.
Mrs Filtness, March 2017
January 2017
Fantastic cottage close to town centre .. Great facilities and very helpful owners. Loads of pubs and restaurants .

The standard of the cottage was superb.. It was so cosy, a real home from home. Above and beyond what we expected.. The landlords are really lovely and helpful too.
