Self-Catering Reviews

September 2020
We think customers need to be aware of the many steps and stairs around the house.. Some up to the top bedrooms are very steep, with shallow treads. With no toilet up there any night-time visits are tricky. The property had a rather neglected air. In particular the garden was over grown and untended. Vegetation was growing out of the gutters. Items requiring repair we were advised about, but a shame that they could not be done. We read reviews about a strange smell in the house; I believe this is coming from the lobby in the downstairs cloakroom where all the cleaning materials are. I think if they could be stored in a cupboard or a container with a tight lid this would help. It was rather over powering; although good to have lots of cleaning materials avialable! The mattress on the double bed was very hard and uncomfortable; something also mentioned by other guests. I had prompt and helpful contact with the owner. The off street parking was a plus. The house is also well placed for walking the coastal paths, and catching the bus. A nice location.

This is not a conventional property.. There were obviously two sides to the house. The new part consisted of the upstairs lounge and downstairs kitchen which were lovely and comfortable and well equipped The back of the property consisted of a snug and the bathroom and bedrooms set on three floors . You had to go down from the lounge through the kitchen to go back upstairs to bed and bathroom. The smallest room was the double bedroom. The mattress needs replacing very uncomfortable . As we had spare rooms to use this was overcome by doing so. There were a lot of cobwebs and spiders about so a feather duster would be handy.

Lovely, well equipped, character cottage in a great location.. The owner is very nice: we had flowers, tea, coffee, milk and even a bottle of wine in the fridge on arrival. This was our second holiday at Burnside and no doubt we will be back.

The cottage was in a great location we could walk to the beach and the children really liked the playground over the road.. The living accommodation was spread over two floors and was very good. We really liked the play room for the children. The house was a bit let down by the bedrooms upstairs as they were a bit unclean, smelt strange and the beds were quite uncomfortable. Parking was a bit tricky on the drive if other cars were parked on the street. Overall we had a lovely time and would recommend to families whose children are confident with stairs.

Lovely cottage lots of in door stairs.. Most of the cottage clean but cobwebs in the bathroom and all over the upstairs windows .We did not use the cooker but noticed it needed a clean .We hope we not too picky .The cottage is a real gem just in the right place ,just needs a bit of a spring clean it did not spoil our holiday .

The house was very homely and welcoming, the owners were very prompt to respond to any queries we had in a friendly way.. There were also little extra touches on arrival such as tea bags, coffee, sugar and a small bottle of milk for that essential cuppa on arrival. The village shops are very close and have all the basic things needed with a smile. I would say however our experience of trying to eat out was disappointing due to everything being booked up solid for miles around so no chance of spontaneity unless you want takeaway. On the upside there is plenty to do in the area but be prepared for some hard walking up and down some steep inclines even in the streets... beautiful place to visit!!

Great cottage, clean, lots of equipment provided in the kitchen.. NB photo take from the rear, parking for 1 car off the road. Lots of stairs. Ideal for our family. I would recommend the property, it is inland but walkable to the sea (about 20 mins), ideal location for Whitby, North York Moors, Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough. Great bus service. Quiet with local shop and bakery/butcher/pizza shop. Nice walks around the country lanes.

The photos don't really do the house justice.. Perfect for a short break away. Brilliant location close to robin hoods bay and Whitby. Local pub 2 minutes walk away with decent food. Would recommend this house definitely.

We have been to this cottage on several occasions and always find it kept to a good standard.. It has its own parking space which is a bonus in this very popular area. Thankyou to the owners.

This was a fantastic property for a family holiday.. Although the multiple staircases were difficult with a small child this was more than balanced by the fact that there was a high chair and cot, toys and DVDs which kept the kids very happy.

This a lovely, well located, well equipped and spacious holiday home. It is a short walk to Robin Hood's Bay and Boggle Hole. It is also convenient for footpaths and cycle ways (i.e. Cinder Track, part of the No 1 cycle route). The X93 bus service between Scarborough and Whitby is a regular service that passes the door. A butcher/baker and pizza maker is just down the hill and a few metres further on ia a corner shop for basic groceries and newspapers. The accommodation is on three floors with a modern extension making 3 double bedrooms and three distinct sitting rooms (4 if you count the spacious kitchen). There is one good size bathroom with free standing bath and shower cubicle. There is also a coakroom. It easily accommodates 6 adults and is also very suitable for children of all ages (although there are lots of stairs). There were 4 of us and we found it easy to go off and read, or have a nap, or watch TV without getting in the way of anybody else. From the rear parlour we saw lots of bird life and the back garden is usuable and secure facing onto fields. The only slight drawback is the off road parking. This house accommodates 6 people and it is possible there would be two cars. We found it was too much of a squeeze for two cars (a VW Golf and Vauxhall Corsa). The second car was parked on the road. There was always space and it wasn't an issue but the agent we booked through stated there was off road parking for 2 vehicles. Overall, we cannot recommend this place highly enough.

This cottage is a wonderful place for a holiday, as long as you don't mind stairs.. It is remarkably spacious and bright, considering its modest appearance from the street. Its subtle front made it hard to find at first, even though it sits on the main road through Fylingthorpe. It's better to look for it before dark! Although we did not meet the owner, we felt personally welcomed. The cottage was well supplied with everything we required, there was a generous supply of firewood, and some of it was skillfully arranged in the stove, ready to be lit. We were greeted by a package of biscuits on the table, tea in the cupboard, and fresh milk in the fridge. The back of the house has great views of the dales. Fylingthorpe is a very small village, but there are two shops (a butcher-baker that makes excellent meat pies, and a general store) just a stone's throw away. There is more shopping and pubs at Robin Hood's Bay which is a moderate walk down the hill. We could also walk there along a footpath through some farms. For a more urban experience, there is a bus to Whitby every 30 minutes. The North Sea coast here is spectacular. We are not serious walkers, but we challenged ourselves to go to Whitby by foot along the Cleveland Way (about 7 miles) for the best fish-and-chips in the world.

Burnside is a stunning property and really made our holiday. We were so comfortable there and found it to be so clean and so beautifully finished it was almost disappointing going home to our own house again! Stayed there with our kids who enjoyed having their own rooms. We especially liked the ample living space, the big kitchen and beautiful bathroom. It was, by a mile, the nicest self-catering house we have ever stayed in and we would consider returning to the area just to stay there again!

A lovely clean welcoming property with plenty of space. The weather was so beautiful we spent more time outside but the property was well equipped to deal with any eventuality - a quiet room, TV room, even a room to sit and chat whilst wait for the meal to cook. Had a well equipped kitchen, the bathroom facilities are good and the downstairs toilet is a help.

This is obviously a well loved property in a beautiful area of Yorkshire. We felt at home as soon as we arrived and the ability to buy freshly laid eggs from next door was a bonus. The walking distance to Robin Hoods Bay was easy to manage and the local pub served some superb food.

Had a great stay at Burnside. Spacious kitchen with long dining table - perfect for evening meal for us 4 adults. Plenty of utensils / pans etc so cooking eve meals was hassle free. We also had a 3 year old who enjoyed having a 'play room' next to dining room complete with a box of toys, which was a thoughtful touch. The house is on 3 levels and there are steep stairs, steps down to the front door plus a wooden staircase from first floor entrance /TV area down to the kitchen, so be aware if you are bringing young children. Gorgeous bathroom with a fantastic deep bath - perfect for soaking away the aches and pains after a clifftop run. Original features give this place bags of character alongside a modern kitchen / bathroom. Good heating system meant the place stayed warm and cosy against the north east coast chilly coastal fog. One rather tight parking space outside but there was parking on the road further up the road. Highly recommend.

House was very clean and lovely. We particularly liked having 2 sitting rooms so the children could spread out. Also the patio was perfect and we often ate outside watching the sheep on the hill opposite. It was great to arrive somewhere new after a drive and be welcomed by milk and biscuits for a much needed cup of tea. House is perfectly located between Whitby and Scarborough for exploring but it's also a lovely child friendly walk into Robin Hood's bay for looking for fossils. My children particularly loved the massive bath. House owners were extremely helpful. Would recommend.

It is obvious straight away that this is not just a 'rental' cottage but a well-loved family home with all those little extras to make it feel a real home-from-home. We all enjoyed the luxurious deep bath. The cottage is well situated, a lovely stroll across fields to Robin Hood's Bay where we had some great days on the beach. Would definitely recommend Burnside for a family holiday and would like to return one day too.

We spent a week at Burnside and we loved every minute of it. The house has three levels with 3 lounge areas and a spacious kitchen. There are little personal touches like the small fossils found in the local beach which we found endearing. The facilities are good and the location is perfect: half way between Whitby and Scarborough. Highly recommended.

The house is a bit odd in that you approach it from the back - however - it is a lovely place once you are in it. Plenty of space and things for children too. 15 mins to Whitby, 5 mins down to the sea, 20 mins onto the moors. A great place and really lovely owners; a pleasure to deal with. The only issue is the door is a bit hard the first time you use it - but its okay once you get used to it. (Not good if you have a disability as there are lots of stairs and are a little steep.)

We enjoyed our stay and the location coupled with the rental price was very good.It was clean and well appointed and very comfortable.the only problem we could find was this is still a work in progress home.Tiles in the kitchen needed to be fixed the small room to the rear had a damp smell as did the toilet off the kitchen which if the door was left shut overnight was quite strong. But apart from that no problem.i would like to stay there again next year and will book if available.
