Self-Catering Reviews

September 2020
It was a lovely cottage and we very much enjoyed our stay.. It's so hard to find a decent place to stay that allows 3 dogs, but this cottage was perfect! There was a lovely kitchen/diner leading on to a sitting room all of which had a linoleum floor so we kept the dogs in that area only as it's so much easier to keep clean with potentially muddy paws! We were very lucky with the weather though so no didn't have to worry about this in the end. The village itself was charming and there were some lovely walks. There is a pub directly across from the cottage which offered fantastic Nepalise food, it was delicious and the service was super. I'd definitely book here again, thanks for having us!

The photo's of Blind Man's Gate do not do the place justice.. The house is fab and clearly set up for people with dogs. The garden is secure and the provision of dog towels was a really nice touch. The whole house has a lovely feel to it. The only issue that we had was that the bathroom light stopped working and was too high for us to attempt to replace ourselves. We reported it but it was not replaced in the 2 days before we left - the agent was let down by the maintenance person, as there were only 3 of us in the house it was not an issue to leave the bathroom door open!

The property is excellent, we hade a good break in a lovely part of the world.. But with the community shop up the road and new houses too, the road outside can get a little busy. A parabolic mirror on a pole outside would make turning out of the property a great deal safer.

We all (5 adults and 2 dogs) enjoyed our stay at Blind Man's Gate over the Christmas period.. We particularly appreciated the comfortable beds, the large kitchen area, the large garden and ample parking space. Many thanks to the owners, for the Christmas welcome pack of champagne and chocolates! The location of the cottage was ideal for walking (memorable walk to the Alma Arms on Christmas Day) and we had a very good meal on Christmas Eve at the Roadmakers Inn opposite. It was also very convenient for visiting Gloucester and Hereford, both about 25 mins drive away and both worth seeing. All-in-all a very enjoyable stay and we would recommend it.

The house was spacious and very well equipped for our stay.. The kitchen had everything we needed for catering for a party of 6 adults and 3 children. Having two lounges meant that there was space for everyone to get together or chill out separately. The games room proved to a real bonus for three imaginative young girls to amuse themselves. It didn’t matter that sadly the weather was wet and dull the accommodation more than made up for it. We had a very lovely weekend at Blind Man’s Gate.

The cottage was perfect! So comfortable, and they had really thought of everything we might need. Nice touches like a bottle of milk in the fridge, and a bag of ice for the g and t to start the holiday! The location was brilliant too, and we enjoyed long walks helpfully suggested in the information pack. Thank you!

The location and property were both fantastic.. It was a really homely atmosphere everything was as a self catering holiday should be. There was 9 people staying for one night, there was still plenty of space, and facilities were not stretched. There is a village shop, but it took some finding, it is up the lane by the cottage on the left behind the church. There was a woodburner, which was great, but once the wood ran out, neither we nor the caretaker could find the keys to the garage where the extra logs were stored. It did not mar our stay, possibly a previous tennant took them home. The only down side which possibly needs looking at is that there are no gates above the stairs which leads to the cellar, which has been turned into a very useful games/play room. This access was from the kitchen diner, which was in daily use. The end of the dining table backs onto this staircase, so caution is needed when as us you all sit around the table and one chair backs onto this staircase. Other than this, an ideal property to rent I would stay there again. If the owners sort out this stair gate, they get a ten from me. Thank you

Lovely service.. Beautiful house. Only downside is that local shop either doesn't exist or not open. Would go back though

This is a lovely, clean, spacious cottage. The garden was lovely safe enclosed. The owner was easily contactable. We had a great stay despite the weather being unkind earlier in the week. We would highly recommend this cottage and would like to come back again next year.

The cottage was warm, welcoming and you felt right at home immediately. It was perfect for all our family needs. We had a lovely stay and could not fault anything. We were so pleased with the choice of this cottage, it was also perfect for the places we wanted to visit. A special family weekend enhanced by the cottage, many thanks.

A very nice cottage, the photos do not really do it justice. The lounges were bigger than expected with comfy sofas. There was a lovely big kitchen table! We were a group of 6, a toddler and dogs and we all enjoyed our stay. The games room was a good idea, the bedrooms were all a good size and there was a lovely pub just across the road. We would go back.

We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It was very spacious and we had plenty to do. We were a group in our late twenties/early thirties and would recommend Blind Man's Gate as a great little getaway.

The cottage was all we could have wanted for our 'girlie' weekend! Bedrooms, beds, linen towels were fab! Even the awful weather didn't put a dampener on our time! It was really spacious and the games room was good fun. Many thanks for letting out your wonderful home!

I booked the cottage for a long weekend away for my Mum's 60th birthday, just 3 adults and 3 dogs (although the cottage easily accommodates up to 9 people). Although a little difficult to find (I blame the satnav), Chris was at the end of the phone to direct us. The cottage is beautiful, quaint, quirky and incredibly homely. I really can't fault it. There was everything you could need and the cupboard of bits and bobs such as tea, coffee etc was a lovely welcome. Although I did make a Tesco online order beforehand which arrived within an hour of us getting to the cottage, so we soon had the cupboards and fridge full of our home comforts too. The cottage is situated quite close to a main road but once you're inside you can't really hear the traffic and, let's be honest, a main road in Upton Bishop is like a quiet cul-de-sac back home. We spent an hour in the pub opposite on Sunday afternoon which I can highly recommend. The staff are lovely and, whilst we didn't eat there, the restaurant seemed very busy so I imagine the food must be good. Ross-on-Wye is just a 10 minute drive away for those who like a mooch around the shops and, if you're the unlucky one who ends up waiting outside the shops with the dogs, you won't be alone - the town is full of people in the same boat who are all very friendly and welcoming. The dogs absolutely loved their break and the cottage provides towels to dry their paws as well as drinking bowls and throws for dogs who sneak on the sofa when you're not looking. All in all a wonderful weekend at a place that I would definitely recommend!

We spent 7 nights at Blind Mans Gate for a family celebration. The property sleeps up to 9 comfortably, and is in a good location to visit The Forest of Dean and surrounding areas. The property itself is very old and characterful, and you do have to forgive it a few quirks and creaks - plus a little tires in places - but we loved that about it. The beds are very comfortable and it is very pet friendly (a real asset for us). Our only real issue was that we lacked enough comfortable seating in one room - i.e. where all 8/9 people can sit around as a family. The 'main room' would take this as there is an additional table in there that we personally did not use (there is another larger table in the kitchen that we did use) and ideally this could be replaced with another sofa. There is more seating in an additional 'TV' room (again very comfortable), but sadly still only really seating up to 6. So - if you are a smaller party (or a larger group and are OK with a few on the floor / on dining room chairs or in another room) then it really is great and highly recommended...

First time that we have booked a house to stay in for a holiday. It was ideal for the 7 of us. Lovely location, would certainly consider booking a cottage again.

The size of the property was good for a family get together which is what I required. Everything you could possibly need was provided. There was also an excellent Gurkha Restaurant right next door. The caretaker was extremely helpful and friendly. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The house easily accommodated 8 adults, a baby and a dog. The location was ideal for exploring the area. The owners went out of their way to provide everything we needed and more.
