This is a gem of a cottage in a lovely Scottish village with all the local amenities you could wish for. There are beautiful walks from the door step and the village is a good base if you are wanting to explore further afield. The cottage itself is well equipt, cosy and warm. The log burner in the dining end of the kitchen provides a welcoming feel and the lounge is spacious and airy if you are holidaying as a larger family group. Large comfy beds and wonderful views from all the windows. Our only complaint would be the lack of attention to detail by the cleaner...on arrival we found frozen peas left in the freezer by a previous holiday maker and the filter coffee machine was full of used coffee grinds and a soggy filter paper. There were no firelighters or newspapers to light the log burner and the gas igniter clicker was empty so we couldn't light the fire until the next day when we went to the shop to buy matches and firelighters. There is a first aid kit in the kitchen which contains only a few wet wipes and a survival blanket. My advice would be to take your own first aid kit just in case. Also a couple of light bulbs need replacing and we couldn't find any spares. All in all a lovely cottage just needs a bit of extra care taking to make it perfect in every way.

Avondale cottage is lovely, the owners seem to have thought of everything.. The views are beautiful and the village is very pretty. We like to travel around the local area whilst on holiday, so found Tomintoul a bit remote.

The cottage was a brilliant base for activities in the speyside area, the cottage was warm, clean and had everything you needed and the brand new bathroom had a great shower and bath.. The master bedroom is a true superking, with a great mattress. There’s an outside dog kennel (lockable) for the odd occasion you don’t want to take them with you- we went out to dinner in Tomintoul ( choice of four restaurants). Overall excellent.

I booked this cottage for my 70 birthday before arrival trying to contact owner was really hard and when I did he was so rude and sharp on arrival the cottage was not what I expected contacted the owner referring the WiFi and the water pressure in the kitchen only to be told that it’s hard to get WiFi so why say there is as the rest of my family we’re going to contact me via WiFi on my birthday but this did not happen and the water pressure in the kitchen was told was it was ok when he was there 2 weeks ago so we had to fill kettle in bathroom to get hot water to wash dishes in kitchen my daughter had tried to contact the owner to see if there was anywhere nice to take me for a meal for my birthday she is still waiting for a reply.. My daughter and I ave booked with Sykes cottage on many occasions but I can assure you after this experience it will make me think twice before I book with you again I was so excited and looking forward to my birthday only to be really let down. I look forward to your reply Ms Diana Sykes

We spent the first week of a 3 weeks roundtrip here. It had everything needed and far more. We loved the large living room, nice kitchen and the Master bedroom. As we had the luck of very hot weather we were not able to try the logfire. But instead we were wild swimming in River avon. Wonderful and quiet! From the hiking car park nice longer and shorter walks possible. Thanks a lot for the nice time spent here!

Excellent weeks stay.. No complaints at all, lovely cottage and exactly as described. Good place to tour from and Tomintoul is a lovely village. Try the Whskey Castle friendly owner who is happy to give you many tasting samples, I am not tight but it was a such a friendly place. Highly recommended cottage and village.

The property could do with updating and a thorough clean, especially found the edges of the rooms.. This is the worst value for money we have had in a holiday cottage. Off the road parking would be of value as traffic passing is not safe when loading kids or dogs.

Lovely little cottage, great for our family of 5.. Great base for cycling suitable for even our 5 year old. We were blessed with good weather but on the one day that we got caught in a shower we were very glad of the tumble drier and the fire! We had a Tesco delivery for the week organised for when we arrived and we did need to make use of our cool box (the fridge space was reduced as the freezer was a small compartment within the fridge). We were surprised to be able to buy groceries at the local post office which came in handy. Another pleasant surprise was the adventure playpark at the top of the village with a flying fox - a nice distance away for an after dinner play ;)

We stayed in this bonny wee cottage for a week and had a lovely time. We found the cottage clean and everything supplied in the kitchen that you need. The downstairs bathroom looks a bit tired but the cottage itself more than made up for it with its lovely charm and comfortable seats. The village is very dog friendly and we found at least 3 eating places in the Square that welcomed dogs. We were reluctant to leave and would defintely recommend this holiday rental.

A lovely cottage in a great location. The cottage had everything that we needed for a comfortable stay and it was finished to a good standard. More importantly, it was homely and very dog friendly. Looking forward to a return visit!

The cottage itself is lovely and was perfect for what we wanted; a week to escape our busy lives. We loved the log fire and the comfy sofas in the lounge room. Also the bed in the master room was huge and very comfortable! However a couple of things have caused me to give a lower score: 1. The kitchen, despite being well equipped with everything you need to make a meal (or bake a cake if you wanted to) it wasn't very clean, there was grease over the cupboards and everything around the hob; I had to give everything a good clean before I wanted to cook there. 2. They only left 1 and a bit toilet rolls for us... We were staying for a week and paying peak holiday season price, so I don't think it would have been too expensive for them to leave a few more to get us through; I would have expected this to be included. 3. The fire, it was mentioned up front that we'd have to buy extra logs if we needed more than the first basket provided but again I thought this was a bit steep considering what we'd paid to stay there already, also they left no kindling for us to start a fire so we had to go collect some (thanks for leaving a bucket!) 4. Wifi - only worked for us in the kitchen and front room (which actually gave us a nice break from our phones!!) so this is a positive too!! 5. Cobwebs! Most of the cottage, aside from the kitchen was clean but could do with a good de-cobwebbing! 6. The view was amazing from the back of the cottage but the windows were so dirty you could barely see out. Anyway all that aside it was a lovely stay and we made the most of the place for the week we were there!

The cottage was lovely, retained its original setting but also had a nice modern extension. A lovely view from the main lounge and well situated in a lovely Highland Village. Tomintoul is rather special and I recommend this very much.

Avondale is well located for touring this corner of Scotland. Had a great view from the lounge window and a very dog-friendly garden which makes an easier holiday when taking own pet. Loved the big, comfortable bed. Money has been spent on good quality kitchen utensils equipment. Loved time spent by the solid fuel stove.

We had a lovely stay in Avondale Cottage - it was very comfortable and well appointed. The upstairs bedrooms were perfect for our children and the main bedroom was nice and private. The kitchen is very cosy and toasty with the wood burner - great layout! We will be back!

I love Scotland, and this was the perfect location as I have family living near. I enjoyed the peace and quiet of the countryside and the highlands. We enjoyed walking around Tomintoul and coming back to the warm, comfortable cottage. The cottage was furnished well and was lovely to come back light the stove and chill out in the evenings. The beds were very comfortable and enjoyed peaceful nights sleep. The views were fabulous, and we enjoyed watching the sunsets over the mountains. Cannot wait to visit in summer months.
