Right from the information Amanda provided regarding walks from the cottage prior to the holiday, and the wine, chocolates and milk upon our arrival, right through to the end of our holiday - our stay at Avalon Stables was an absolute delight.. The cottage itself is absolutely beautiful - fantastically equipped with everything you could possibly need. It was beautifully clean when we arrived and were greeted by both Amanda and Paul. The 'tour' of the house was really helpful and meant we knew where everything was for the week ahead.
Once you get used to the upside down layout, the advantages become obvious - including the views (particularly to Long Ships Lighthouse) and having both the kitchen and dining area together upstairs works really well. We particularly liked the breakfast bar and the kitchen itself was superb - everything you needed, and so easy to use. The living room was beautiful and (again) wonderfully furnished throughout.
The two ensuite bedrooms were just sublime - with TV's in both, and beautiful beds/bedding. The baths were wonderful and the showers were great too (particularly in the double room - wow!). The conservatory for the double room was a great touch too and a real sun trap.
The enclosed garden (accessed via the conservatory) was perfect for our needs and very practical. In the summer it would be really useful for al fresco dining too.
As for the location - Avalon Stables was very easy to find (great directions provided prior to the holiday) and is perfectly situated to explore the magical Far West of Cornwall. From here you can find St Just, Cape Cornwall, Botallack, Geevor & Levant tin mines, Pendeen Light House, Potherras Beach, one way and Gwynver Beach (dog friendly all year), Sennen Cove, Land's End, Nanjizal Beach, Porthcurno and the stunning Minack Theatre the other - and all within ten minutes driving. Further afield you can visit Lamorna Cove, Mousehole, Newlyn, Penazance (with a Sainsbury's, Tesco & Morrison's Superstores all in neighbouring Long Rock) and Marazion beach and the mighty St Michael's Mount in one direction and St Ives & Hayle the other - and they're all within 20-25 minutes drive. Really - just an amazing area. Oh - and you can walk across the road from the cottage and hike up Chapel Carn Brea... and other great walks within easy distance. You really can't fault the location!
All in all - we have had a marvellous, relaxing and enjoyable week at Avalon Stables. Paul & Amanda are really helpful and right next door to you - but never intrusive. We'd heartily recommend the cottage as great for families too, and it's a superb dog friendly place too. If (and when) we return to the South West - we'll certainly be checking availability again to see if we can book Avalon Stables for a repeat stay!!
