Self-Catering Reviews

Mr Steventon
August 2020
The flat was larger than I expected giving me plenty of room.. I could sit in the bay window watching the world go by. The TV broke down but instant action was taken to replace it. Local shops are plentiful with a Sainsbury's and Co-op. Haltwhistle is full of history itself with easy access to Roman remains. Carlisle is a short train journey away. I had an enjoyable walk down the South Tyne and back. All in all a splendid flat in s wonderful location.

This is a brilliant property, there are plenty of places to eat, public transport both buses and trains easily accessible.. Owners have thought of everything needed for a great holiday, thankyou Stella and Ian.

A lovely apartment in possibly the freindliest town in England.. The owners of the apartment were equally as welcoming, helpful and friendly as they were on my first visit to this Haltwhistle apartment last year. Booking was so easy. I paid a deposit and Sykes did everything else whilst keeping me fully informed. No worries about when to make the final payment - Sykes let you know and will do it all for you if you want.

We had a lovely holiday at the Drover's Rest in Haltwhistle.. The flat has everything required for a good holiday, and is very light and spacious, with lots of cupboard/wardrobe space. The oven and washer/dryer were very easy to operate. The bay window seat is lovely for people watching, and waiting for the AD122 bus to Hadrian's Wall. Haltwhistle is a fabulous little town with all the shops, pubs and eateries you could possibly need. Hexham was also a good place to explore. The flat was very central and convenient for the buses out to Hadrian's Wall, and the 3 day bus pass very reasonably priced. The only drawback was lack of parking round the back of the flat, as all the residents had their own parking spots, so parking in Sainsbury's car park solved the problem.

Very comfortable and perfect location for exploring area.. Our only problem was the fluctuating water temperature - very annoying when in shower!

It would be reassuring for arriving visitors to have the name of the property on the door, or the key safe next to it.. The exhaust fan in the bathroom of the flat below is very noisy, disturbing our sleep when used in the middle of the night.

Fantastic place, very warm and homely.. Just a great holiday place.

Regarding Drovers Rest all was of good quality.. We were very happy there on our visit to the Wall and Roman experience. The previous comments helped with evening plans. Two aspects that would raise from excellent to superb: 1) a bigger bed than the double provided. 2) sort out the off road parking as only 1 of the 3 nights was I able to use it. Otherwise great

Drover's Rest is a lovely, well presented apartment in the middle of Haltwhistle with easy access to everything you could need for a quiet break.. I would definitely choose to stay there again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful part of the country.

Very satisfied overall but disappointed that discount vouchers were only available to people who had mobile phones which enabled them to use apps.. This was no use to old-fashioned technophobes like us.

June 2018
A lovely apartment in a beautiful town.. The owners were friendly and helpful and the apartment was very well equipped. It is an ideal spot to explore Hadrian's Wall and further afield using excellent public transport - especially the AD122 bus which gets you to various points of the Wall. Shops including Sainsbury and Co-op are a couple of minutes walk and there are plenty of good pubs, coffee shops and takeaways in the town. Hexham and Carlisle are within easy reach. It was very easy to sort out all the cottages/apartments on the Sykes website and even a fool could easily make a booking through Sykes (I'm the living proof of that)

No, the booking procedure was very efficient.. The Drovers Rest was very comfortable and well equipped. It was an excellent base for exploring Hadrians Wall and part of the North Pennines.

A fabulous location in the heart of Haltwhistle, with a wonderful window seat to watch the High Street comings and goings.. Loads of radiators for warmth, and plenty of large, fluffy towels. The folders of local information were very welcome, with maps, leaflets etc. Ideally, we would have liked a shelf in the shower for toiletries, plus a non slip mat to stand on. Also, a 5 foot bed would have been our preference, rather than a 4foot6. We would love to return for a longer stay.

We recently stayed at Drovers rest and it was a perfect base for walking Hadrians wall. It was clean, well stocked and extremely comfortable. There is an excellent bus/train service on your doorstep and a lovely pub opposite ( the black bull) The owner was there to meet us on arrival and left us with a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates.... thank you very much. We would definitely recommend this apartment and would stay here again should we return to holiday in this area.

June 2017
Really good accommodation and the owners were very approachable and helpful.. The apartment was very clean, tidy and warm. We found everyone we met to be very friendly and we really enjoyed our stay in Haltwhistle. Its a lovely little town with lots to do on its doorstep and extremely handy for a lot of the Hadrians wall sites. Special mention to the Black Bull pub where we spent quite a few hours enjoying good beers and good company. Every meal we had while staying in Haltwhistle was really good and that goes for all the other places we visited. Looking forward to returning to Northumberland sometime soon.

March 2017
The Drovers Rest in Haltwhistle was an excellent place to stay.. Right in the middle of the town and easy walking to supermarkets, banks, coffee shops etc. All the attractions of Hadrian's Wall Roman sites are easily accessible by car. The cottage was warm, welcoming, comfortable, well-equipped and wonderfully quirky. We loved it! The only issue was parking our car behind the building - so we solved it by leaving it in the Sainsbury's carpark just behind the cottage, as suggested by the host. I recommend the Drovers Rest for anyone wanting to visit Hadrian's Wall and that area of Northumberland.
Ms Lamont, March 2017

December 2016
This is a lovely apartment in fantastic village.. The people are friendly and helpful. The shops are all little independents which was lovely, a small Sainsbury's within walking distance which you did not need really. There are many cafes serving excellent food you could have breakfast somewhere different every day. We went on a few of the short walks around the town, and up to Hadrians wall which was very good. The apartment was well quipped for our break and very warm with an excellent Christmas hamper of treats thank you for our Christmas Week.
Mr Scott, December 2016

But! The booking did not provide the street number, or give enough information on where to gain entry to the building and find the key.. We took about 15 minutes to find the property and gain entry. Once inside the property was great!

Nice, very friendly welcome from the owners. Excellent furnishing, spotless accommodation - really everything we needed. Apartment centrally located, quiet, despite being in the centre of town with Sainsbury's just a short walk away. The living accommodation was close to ideal.. The WIFI in the accomodation was good. The ease of access to Northern Britain that Haltwhistle provided, we had side trips to Edinburgh and Windernere and day excursions to Durham and Settle. The range of provisions, services and activities available in Haltwhistle. The efficiency and regularity of the UK railways. We intend to book again next year, and from Haltwhistle will revisit Edinburgh, and make side trips to Glasgow and York.

This first floor apartment was large, spotlessly clean and the feature bay window allowed plenty of natural light. The kitchen was fully functional with a large dining table and two very comfortable settees to watch the large flat screen TV. The spacious bedroom was clean and comfortable with plenty of storage. The large bathroom was only let down by the smallish shower however there was constant hot water and plenty of towels provided. The apartment was located in the middle of a very friendly town with easy walking to the supermarket and the local (extremely hospitable) pubs. A short walk to the train station makes this apartment accessible to those without a car. This was an ideal spot to visit Hadrians Wall as well countless walks and we would definitely stay there again and recommend it to friends and relatives.

It was our second stay here in Haltwhistle at the Drover's Rest. A warm welcome again with added touches from the owners. A lovely village atmosphere with plenty of good shops on the high street, all of a good quality with very friendly and helpful people. This time we left the car parked and used the local buses, which were very convenient, if a little expensive. There is plenty to see and do even in the winter here. May have a summer visit soon!

Apart from some confusion finding the place, because the building is not called The Drover's Rest, I had a very enjoyable holiday. The flat was warm and very well fitted up, with a lovely window in the sitting room. The owners, Ian and Stella Hunter, were helpful and friendly. The train station is close, and the bus stop to take the ad122 over Hadrian's wall is five strides from the front door. The local Sainsbury's is just as close. A lovely place.
