We've just returned from a weeks stay at Ddol Helyg and it was a great week.
The property is great for large groups and large families, it is based in Llanrug which we found ideal for days out to Anglesey, Caernarfon, Llanberis, Portmerion and Llandudno. There is only really one pub within walking distance and we were not too impressed with the quality or price of the food, but there are loads of good places around such as the Newborough Inn which was only 6 minutes drive away and was amazing.
The house itself is great, the kitchen is ideal for large groups, there is a dishwasher and utility room for washing etc... One of the bedrooms, the largest with the jacuzzi bath and shower is over the kitchen and heating, as a result it gets really really warm and is slightly cut off from the rest of the house, but people with babies might quite like this.
The rest of the rooms are next to or over the living room, we did find the main bedroom, and the bunk room and twin room (over the bunk room/next to the main room) were really warm - they seemed to have the underfloor heating and were slightly stifling - you can't change this yourself but ask Barbara and she will try to help. The remaining two rooms were colder but we liked this.
There is limited wi-fi reception and TV - but you are in Wales on holiday so do you really need this. I actually enjoyed not having access to facebook and emails.
My only criticism apart from the heating which can be resolved was the bathrooms were grubby, we had to clean the showers and bath before we'd use them.
Whilst it is pet friendly there are limitations, there are horses so the dogs have to be on their leads, the back garden is small - fine for one small dog but that is it, there was also a lot of bird feathers which had to be cleaned constantly - really it could have been cleaned up to be better, also the dog is not allowed to be left in the house alone or on the furniture.
The highlight is the pottery which Barbara owns, she is really helpful and is happy for you to go in at night when it is closed and take a bottle of wine and paint a pot - its about £9-11 including the £1 charge to paint it there - but its worth it. I painted two piggy money banks and it was great fun for everyone. We will definately be going back again
