Wooler is a charming, medieval market town nestled in the foothills of the Cheviots, a fantastic base for visiting Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Wooler is a short drive from the historic town of Alnwick, with its famed Castle and Gardens, and the well-preserved Garrison town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, both of which are located on the fringe of the Northumberland National Park. Chillingham Castle, home to a historic herd of wild white cattle, and Coldstream, are just across the Scottish border.

Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.

We have just had a three night stay at the Old Bakery in Wooler. It had been a number of years since we had been to the town and we were pleasantly impressed by the town, its new attractions and beauty of the surrounding area. The cottage itself is centre town and has its own parking space. Grocery shopping and restaurants are all at hand and the cottages’ owner, Kathy, lives close by and is always ready with help and advice. When we arrived, there were chocolates, a bottle of fruit drink and milk waiting for us. The property was exceptionally clean and very comfortable. There was everything we wanted in the kitchen including microwave, regular oven, plenty of hot water and a washing machine that we didn’t actually use. Apart from the fridge in the kitchen there was also a separate fridge freezer if we needed it. There was a double bed and a single and both beds were comfortable and there was copious wardrobe and storage space. Although the bathroom had no separate shower it had a deep bath with a hand showerhead to use if we wished. It was all that we required. A good sized TV with DVD player and the option of a log fire (logs supplied) completed our comfort. We highly recommend this cottage as well as this area of Northumberland to discover and explore.

This charming, characterful cottage has an excellent mix of historical features and modern convenience. The location in the centre of Wooler is great for shopping and visiting lots of the wonderful places and sites of this lovely area, and of course for walking. We loved it. The only thing I would add is that if you are bothered by a clock chiming every hour of the night, you might bring ear protection!
