Area
The village of Hessenford is located in a well-wooded valley and is a lovely cluster of pretty seventeenth and eighteenth century cottages lying on the main road from Looe to Plymouth. The Seaton River runs through the village, which was originally called 'Hestonford', thought to mean the witches place in the woods. In 1286 a mill was recorded here and working mills remained until the mid-twentieth century. Today some of the mills have been turned into private homes and pubs. Just three and a half miles away is the small, quiet coastal village of Downderry which has a sheltered beach, shop, cliff-top pub and excellent restaurant, serving quality local food. The picturesque working harbours of Looe and Polperro are within an easy driving distance away and the wonderful stretches of the South West Coast Path in this part of Cornwall takes you to rocky coves, dramatic headlands and tales of shipwrecks and smugglers. Further afield is Plymouth, where there is plenty to do and see including the historic Barbican waterside area.
