Brookbank Folly is a bespoke, timber framed detached cottage situated on the outskirts of the village of Mitcheldean on the edge of the Royal Forest of Dean, in Gloucestershire, 13 miles from Gloucester. Offering single storey accommodation all over the ground floor, the cottage can sleep two people in one double bedroom. The cottage has a shower room with shower, basin and WC, and an open plan living area featuring a handmade fitted kitchen, a dining area and a sitting area with coaleffect electric fire. Outside, guests benefit from a garden and patio area with handmade furniture and BBQ, and there is also off road parking for two cars. Brookbank Folly is conveniently based for a variety of activities including walking and cycling on the numerous forest trails, and is within easy reach of Ross-on-Wye and Gloucester.

Area
Mitcheldean is a Gloucestershire village, close to the Royal Forest of Dean, with old timbered houses and narrow streets. The Forest of Dean is England's largest oak forest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering walking, cycling and horseback trails, along with caving, abseiling and a high wire rope course. Fishing, canoeing and golf are also available in the area. The market town of Ross-on-Wye is close by, in Herefordshire, and offers a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants, while a short drive away is the historic city of Gloucester, home to Victorian Docklands and a Norman Cathedral, the cloisters of which were used as a location in the Harry Potter films.

Visitors to the Cotswolds have long treasured memories of charming towns and villages built from the famous honey-coloured stone, it now boasts a thriving community of contemporary artists working from studios and shops throughout the area.

Pictures don't do it justice at all, we were blown away by the folly.. It was just what we needed for a get away. The folly was cozy and bright at the same time. The kitchen was well equipped, bed was comfy and shower worked well! We only wished we could have stayed longer.

Nice friendly people, nice not having WiFi but annoying sometimes when you feel like going out somewhere for the day and need to book up online to require tickets.. You probably will say why you didn’t you book up these events before you come away but all things you like doing is weather permitting. Fortunately weather was perfect every day. Booking through Sykes was a very smooth and simple process.. Contacting the owner was straightforward. The owner was friendly, polite and helpful, and the bottle of wine and other goodies on arrival was a nice touch, as were the Christmas decorations. The cottage was clean, comfortable and adorably quirky, and tea, coffee, soap, towels, etc were all provided, almost like a hotel. Plenty of heating was available so it was nice and warm. There are local shops for essentials, and a petrol station. No internet/wifi and next to no mobile signal meant we were out of contact (very peaceful once you are used to it!); and probably due to bad weather, there was some variable reception on some tv channels. The folly is down a long narrow track on the side of a hill, in a secluded part of the owner's garden. Accessibility: There is a narrow gravel path down a slope from the car park space then up to the property, probably 20-30 yards, and in all there are then four steps up when you get there. Low doorways in places so taller people need to stoop to avoid headaches. Quite a narrow gate on the way in, might be a squeeze with a big car. The owner has a couple of friendly dogs who come and say hello now and again. Mitcheldean and other local towns are pretty ordinary, but the property is very close to the Forest of Dean.

I do think a note to say there are dogs that do visit the garden from time to time as though I do adore animals, to be advised in advance would have been good. The location is perfect being only a few miles from the town. The forest walks are on the doorstep & are fabulous. Thank you

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this 'hobbit house' looked small from outside but like the tardis it was big inside! So warm and comfortable and everything was provided, and as it was our first self catering holiday it was so good. Slept very well and feel so much better for our holiday in the Forest of Dean. All places that we wanted to see were all within the place range, so easy to travel to and return to "our home" each day. We used our sat nav to get us there but reading instructions of how to get there we didn't see 'Rank Xerox' building and according to Richard it has been closed for about 9 years and is just used as small business. Ian used to work for rank xerox!

Brookbank Folly is the most amazing, quirky little place we have ever seen.. Real little "Hobbit " house in the most wonderful location. Folly was very warm and cosy and very well equipped, even had electric blanket on the bed. Owner met us on arrival and went through all the relevant details with us. Felt like we were in a fairy tale the whole time we were there. Garden area is so still and calm, all you can hear are the birds singing. Anyone who likes gorgeous quirky little places with peace and quiet will adore this little place like we did. Love it.

The Folly would benefit from a new mattress my wife had to sleep on the settee and I never got a good night sleep.. We were informed that the property had had a water leak in the cupboard in the bedroom. This was treated by a heater not a dehumidified. The whole folly smelt mouldy and damp. We were very disappointed with the general state of the folly a renovation is needed particular with the floor tiles and the creeping damp in areas of the folly The outside could do with a uplift. We may have been unfortunate and arrived at the wrong time?

We had a great stay at the Folly and found it peaceful and restful.. It's a good place to use as a base for the Forest of Dean, down a narrow lane but easy enough to negotiate. Michael and his wife Sue were welcoming and we had a guided tour of our cute little home for the week. This is a unique property and it's our intention to go back in warmer weather, there is so much to see in this area and offers plenty of choice for everyone.

We had a brilliant time staying in the folly in December.. They had a lot of snow - 1 foot deep so we got our car snowed in and had to walk everywhere! It was magical. The hosts were extremely helpful and kind and helped us to get up the track back to the main road when we were leaving as the ice was terrible. The only thing I would say is there is no WiFi and our mobile phone signal was rubbish, so we had no access to the internet.

(Raglan Castle...Clearwell caves...Symonds Yat...The international birds of prey centre....to name but a few!)The property was comfortable beautifully set out. The owners were lovely, so unobtrusive. It was romantic and secluded, and yet handy for lots of attractions and things to see/do.

We will definitely stay here again as there is so much to do and see and it is not to far to travel to get anywhere. We loved every minute of it. Gorgeous cottage in a lovely peaceful setting that is also a great base for exploring the forest of dean and surrounding area. The cottage has everything you could need for a romantic and relaxing stay and is just fantastic. Some points to note (in no particular order): Take slippers, the floors are really quite cold! The windows and door are both a bit draughty but the heaters work well and their use is included in the hire price. The lane to and from the cottage is a little scary (some of the locals are a bit mad on the driving front) due to being very narrow. We got a lovely welcome pack of wine, crisps, porridge, milk and marmalade. There was also some coffee and tea there so we didn't have to shop straightaway. Mitcheldean has a co-op and small local store for food, plus takeaways, but no sit down restaurant. The front steps can get a little slippery and be careful not to turn the outside light switch off - you'll never find the keyhole without it! Overall it's a fab little place and we would highly recommend it.

What an amazing little cottage! This little, secluded bolt hole was fantastic and we loved every minute. The owners kindly left a great welcome pack and the little touches, like fresh milk in the fridge, were really appreciated. Just on the edge of the Forest of Dean, this was a great location and was perfect for exploring. If you are looking for somewhere to eat we recommend The Kings Head (9 miles away on the a40 towards Gloucester) where the homemade Steak & Kidney pie was to die for! The cottage is some way down a little winding lane but is easy to find. We could get mobile phone signals but no internet access with Three Mobile. This place is highly recommended, great value, and we will definately be going back for a second visit.

We chose this cottage for its quirkiness and also because of other very positive reviews.We loved every minute of our stay and could have stayed another week.Plenty to do in the daytime.We visited caves,cycled in the forest of dean,visited symonds yat for walking and cycled along the river to Monmouth.Spent our evenings cooking in the well equipped kitchen and chilling out on the settee in the lounge which puts down into a bed.As we had great weather we were able to sit out in the front garden.So peaceful at the cottage as on a no through road so minimal traffic only to other propertys nearby.Owners have three dogs that also come to visit and buzzards circling above.The owner was very nice,very unintrusive but helpful if asked anything.The cottage is amazing and very well built.Lots of quirky points to it.We both loved it and would recommend it to anyone.Cant think of anything negative.

It was like staying at a fairytale cottage, a wonderful time was had.

When we arrived at the cottage the owners were there to meet us they were both very nice people and gave us info on the cottage and surrounding area they left us alone all week but were there if you needed help they introduced us to there dogs . It's a real little hobbits cottage and very romantic with lovley natural wood made from the surrounding Forest of Dean . The location was nice if you like to get away from it all with lots of walks from the cottage . I loved the cottage and its great for a get away from it all type hoilday I did love it but I think next time I would like to be more in a village setting with a pub near by . Saying that I would come back to this cottage if I need some peace n rest type hoilday .

Beautifully crafted cottage, just like a fairytale. The pictures honestly do not do this place justice. If anything I would describe it as a picturesque re-imagination of "snow white & the seven dwarfs cottage" or a house scene from "the legend of zelda". Owners leave you in peace, to your own devices and beautiful covers for the windows for extra privacy. A very romantic place in the middle of nowhere, only a few hamlet-like houses surrounding, a distance down the road & the woodland just behind for peaceful walks. Perfect for a couple seeking a romantic getaway together. There are plenty of movies, board games and the remarkably quaint kitchen to keep oneself occupied. Very warm interior (which is one of the major things I look for as I tend to get cold easily) and the very romantic fire place in the front room, complimented by the cow-skin rug, is very effective at keeping you warm on those winter nights, snuggling on the sofa with a movie!!! We will definitely be returning! A romantic weekend I will never forget...
