Residents and visitors alike refer to the town as 'Barney,' because of its cobblestone streets, yards, and back roads, which were first set up in the 12th century. The neighbouring Bowes Museum is definitely worth a visit and a great way to spend a day roaming about this lovely building and taking in the fascinating exhibits.
