The whole of this part of Devon is absolutely fantastic and the location of the cottage in the heart of the lovely village of Instow is brilliant.. The Tarka Trail cycle path is within a couple of hundred yards there are very good local pubs. Great restaurant on the sea front just a couple of minutes’ walk away.
We had a great time our party was myself my wife and 15-year-old daughter. We had one car and one bicycle.
The cottage is very neat, tidy, clean, bright, comfortable, amply furnished although I thought the provision of towels a bit stingy. In fact, it is everything it says it is.
BUT I think the Sykes website is slightly misinformed
The description of the cottage gives the impression that it is on the beach especially with the absurdly fictional title of ‘Beach Retreat’.
The cottage is not called ‘Beach Retreat’. It is not on the Beach.
It is on a narrow side road called Lane End Road. For some reason you are not given this address until you have paid for your holiday in full.
When we arrived one of the local neighbors had parked her car so close to the front door that we had to pass the luggage over the bonnet of the car to get in the front door. When we asked her very politely to give us a little more room she was unwilling to as her car had been damaged several times by cars passing so close.
The advert gives no mention of the parking restrictions in high season and the nearest car parks up to date charges.
The description of the cottage is akin to the adverts you would see by a less than accurate, dubious estate agent that I thought in this day and age were extinct.
All this left a bit of a sour taste on what was a great holiday and it would be even worse for a young couple with small children.
The cottage has nowhere to sit outside and nowhere to keep bikes. A family of four with four bicycles would need to chain them up together further along the road as there is certainly not enough room inside.
I wouldn’t advise prospective holidaymakers dismissing this cottage altogether in any way at all, but I think the misleading title of beach retreat should be sent to the re-cycle bin. Along with whoever thought it up.
As long as you know what you are getting it is great and we would certainly recommend it.
