Little Urswick, lies on side of a tarn, a wonderful wildlife habitat with a whole host of water birds occupying its sheltered corner.

Birkrigg Stone Circle (4 miles) is one of several prehistoric settlement sites in the surrounding countryside, and the start of the Haematite and Cumbrian Way footpaths can be found a similar distance away. The ancient market town of Ulverston is just 2 miles away, and still has a street market every Thursday and Saturday, plus many festivals throughout the year, including an amazing lantern procession in September and a superb Dickensian weekend in early December.
