Area
Newby Bridge, a small settlement on the banks of the River Leven, is named after a five-arched stone bridge built in 1651. Between Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge, the famed Furness Railway, one of Britain's oldest working standard gauge steam railways, operates. Visit the Lakeside Hotels for spectacular views of Windermere and the surrounding fells, or visit the Aquarium of the Lakes to learn about the history of the Lakes through organically designed habitats. Bowness-on-Windermere is a beautiful day trip, and the quaint village of Hawkshead still has the charm and character that endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. You can also see the views from nearby Gummer's How.
