Ambleside is a lovely town sitting at the northern tip of the renowned Lake Windermere, England's largest lake boasting a range of watersports, eateries, and scenic spots galore. The town itself also hosts a selection of shops, pubs and restaurants, perfect for a self-catered stay in Cumbria. There are plenty of walking and cycling opportunities in the area too, while Windermere and Kendal are well-worth exploring for attractions aplenty.
