June 2021
I stayed at 79 Laurel Bank in Gatehouse of Fleet from 21-26 June with my granddaughter and great grandson. The house is spacious and bright with a back garden. However I would like to point out some things which need improvement. 1. There were no more toilet rolls or bin liners. 2. Only one tea towel. 3. The hoover wasn't emptied. 4. My 4 year old nephew was covered in dog hair when he rolled about on the floor, and we found dog hair underneath the couch. 5. The beds were far too soft. I slept downstairs on the couch some nights because I had backache and the couch provided a firmer support. 6. There were no instructions for any appliances, eg. Cooker, heating. 7. A welcome pack would have been appreciated. We did enjoy our stay there because we could visit our sister in the town and go on walks. The house was in a good location and plenty big enough for 4 of us My granddaughter liked it too.

The holiday cottage was very good.. But I won’t book with Sykes again ever. They were impossible to communicate with as they did not answer the phone or reply to emails when we wanted to change our booking. Shocking customer service.

Ideal base for exploring a lovely part of the region.. Close to coast and countryside and cycling routes. Plenty of walks close by. The house itself is cosy warm and extremely well situated to enjoy the town and its amenities. Local hotels and restaurants serving delicious food.

We expect high standards from Sykes and were not disappointed.. The house was warm and cosy, scrupulously clean and had everything we needed for our stay. The area is fantastic and there was lots to see and do, plenty of places to eat and drink and lovely friendly people to talk to. Towns are notably litter free although recyclying facilities are poor. Our nearest card / paper/ cans recycling facility was ten miles away so we brought our recyclable rubbish home with us. On a tiny note, it is nice to have the option of both bath and shower but the bath would only be suitable for thin people. We are intending to rebook this house again over Christmas next year.

Lovely, well equipped property.. Very well placed for local amenities, especially the second hand bookshop at The Mill on the Fleet! Lots of things to do and places to eat nearby and further afield. We took the ferry across to Belfast (£10 each as a foot passenger - bargain!), to visit the Titanic Experience.

The next door neighbours gate at the front was very distracting.. The blind in the bathroom was too difficult to pull up and down. A handle on the wall of the bath/shower would be useful. The steps to the garden were very steep snd the chicken wire hurt the dog's feet. It would not be ok for handicapped persons. Liked the location to all amenities.

The best cottage we’ve stayed in, really dog friendly and comfortable.. Spotlessly clean and warm. Great town with friendly people in a beautiful area. There are walks outside the front door and a handy Spa store across the road that opens early and stay open late for anything you might need during your stay. Perfect place, we will be going back.

79 Laurel Bank, is a wonderful base for a holiday in Dumfries & Galloway.. The property has a lovely homely feel and is well equipped for a family (&dogs). The slow cooker was well used as we left dinner cooking while we headed off out and about. Gatehouse is a lovely town with friendly people and is a perfect base for visiting the surrounding coast line, forest or family attractions

The cottage was lovely, central location, everything you need was provided, lost .... The cottage was lovely, central location, everything you need was provided, lost a point for comfort because the bed was awful, very uncomfortable, The cottage was 2 min walk to shop, there is a couple of pubs in village that serve meals, there is a park opposite the cottage with woodland walks, I would definitely book this, cottage again if the bed was changed,

Overall the accommodation was very satisfactory, being comfortable, cosy and well-situated.. The heating was effective (and necessary due to the cool weather) and the TV and WiFi worked well. Although on the main street, the house is usually very quiet and has a pleasant outlook. The view over the river and woods to the rear is also nice and it was warm enough one day to sit in the peaceful garden. There is some noise from next door and at times it sounded as if someone was going up and down our stairs. The neighbours’ front door is particularly noisy although the occupants aren’t. The kitchen was well-equipped and the hob very efficient. The only item lacking was a pair of scissors. The bathroom is modern and very smart though the shower screen is not extensive enough to prevent splashing on the floor. The toilet seat is not secure and lurches sideways a little in an alarming manner each time one sits down. From comments made in the guestbook, it was evident that this problem has existed for over a year; perhaps it is very difficult to remedy. We didn’t find the double bed as comfortable as our own; it is obviously a matter of personal taste but we would have preferred a wider, firmer mattress. Having said that, we slept OK and didn’t wake with a stiff back. The town and area are lovely and we didn’t feel the need to use the car much as there are some great walks starting in the town. We ate twice at The Masonic Arms and once at The Murray Arms, the former being excellent. Their new conservatory is beautiful and a very pleasant place to dine; the service was friendly and efficient. Despite the above-mentioned reservations we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would be happy to return.

We had a lovely three-night stay in Laurel Bank. We had originally booked for March, but the day we were meant to set off was during the worst of the snow the UK saw this year! We couldn’t make the 6 hour trip from Hertfordshire through red weather warnings, but Sam was very understanding and allowed us to cancel at short notice and rebook at our next convenience with only a small cleaning fee to pay. We were so grateful, it would have been so disappointing otherwise. The cottage is a great size with two bedrooms, induction cooker, power shower, WiFi, Freeview and all the other amenities you could need. Someone mentioned on here that they didn’t like the way the kitchen came off the end of the hallway but we found it nice and open. Everything was clean and the heating and hot water worked fine. We were really content. We walked along the coast at Mossyard, which was 10 mins drive away. We also had two lovely long walks in Galloway Forest Park, the better being from the Newton Stewart entrance. Gatehouse of Fleet itself is quiet and unassuming. We found it to be a great base to see the Scottish coast. Thank you so much Sam, we really enjoyed our stay. Steph & Simon

The cottage was lovely, clean and welcoming. The bathroom was really nice with loads of hot water and the bedrooms were warm and spacious. The downstairs was a little disappointing as the living/dining room was a bit cramped and neither of us could work out how to use the oven and hob properly. It seemed very complicated and we coudnt find an instruction booklet. However we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have booked again for Easter 2017.

The best aspect of this cottage was the location. The cottage sits on the main road through the village, but it is still very peaceful. At the front it overlooks a grassy area and woodland and at the back a mill (converted to a visitor centre) and the river. The country aspect gave the cottage a tranquil feel, yet all the services were at hand. We especially liked the bus stop right outside as this allowed us to have some car free days. There are several good places to eat within a few minutes walk. The cottage is well equipped, clean and spacious. The bathroom has a great shower and plenty of hot water. We found the beds comfy and there was plenty of storage. The only things that it down were the downstairs layout, the kitchen feels like a corridor as it runs on directly at the end of the hall with no dividing door. The cooker and hob were quite complicated and we couldn't find any instructions. These were minor niggles though and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owner is very helpful and pleasant. When we arrived we had a problem with the lock on the front door. The owner organised a joiner who came within fifteen minutes which was much appreciated. The garden is well maintained and we enjoyed eating dinner outside in the sunshine.

We have stayed in Gatehouse many times and know the area well. This was our first stay at the cottage and it won't be the last. It was well equipped clean and spacious. The cottage is very central in the village and there is plenty of either on street parking or the village car park opposite.

The location amenities were excellent. Lots of wonderful walks within 800 metres of the cottage. The beach was just 5 miles away, the weather did help however, wall to wall sunshine the whole week. Gatehouse of Fleet was a lovely friendly town.

Cottage was freshly modernised, very clean and everything you needed for a weeks stay. It is well located in the centre of the village, within walking distance of shop, pubs, restaurants and park. It has a small back garden which was nice to sit and enjoy the sun.
