Dirty. Lots of broken chipped furnishings and fixtures. Bathroom en suite door not hung properly so I got locked in. No parking. Not dog friendly at all as nowhere to walk them. No soap provided. Nice touch with a bottle of wine but I don’t drink. A bottle of milk would’ve been more useful. And just generally a creepy feeling about the place. Couldn’t wait to get home.

On arrival at the cottage with my 3 young children at 5pm. The previous guests were still at the property. When we turned up they left pretty swiftly - leaving a fowl smell in the kitchen and filthy dirty mess. I called the owner who said the previous guests must have got confused about their check out day (but Sykes cottages said there had been no guests staying at the property the week before) the owner said a cleaner would be around in 20mins but after waiting for nearly 2 hours, I needed to give the kids tea but could not cook in the kitchen, by this time the kids were beside themselves - so we left to find somewhere else to stay. Another reason for not staying is, prior to booking the cottage I checked with the owner to make sure there was decent wifi as I needed to work from the premises for the following 2 days, she said the connection was excellent, but on testing the connection when we arrived it was very slow (under 2 mbs) With no 4g either it was not possible to work from the premises. I would not recommend this property anyone. The owner was extremely unfriendly and refused a refund - even though I only booked a few days before, paid full rate and offered to pay for one of the nights we did not stay. The other disappointment was that the owner lied about the previous guests.

The beds were so uncomfortable we went home a day early. The kitchen isn’t very roomy, the courtyard belongs to other tenants who aren’t slow at telling where you’re not allowed. Parking on the street was also a problem. The WIFI was slow, and the whole building had a cramped feel about it, wouldn’t recommend, and I’ve been to at least seven Sykes properties in the last five years everyone was better than advertised, but this is without doubt by far the worst, would not not recommend.

We usually book a holiday for Christmas every year and we've honestly never had an experience that was as lovely as that we've enjoyed at The Old Smithy. From the beautiful bedrooms to the great family lounge, the games room, and the lovely kitchen the house has all that you need for a really excellent family trip. A special thank you to our hosts Zoe and Nick who were available when we needed them, made our Christmas extra special with all of their little touches and decorations, and could not have been kinder or more helpful. The only reason we'd hesitate to recommend The Old Smithy is that it means it'll be as popular as it deserves to be - and that means it'll be harder for us to book up a return visit. This really is a fantastic holiday cottage and a great place to explore lovely Barnard Castle and the surrounding area.
